And King Sweyn was a real Danish King. The Jomsviking was a real group of vikings. Askeladd is based off of the folk legend Askeladden. Thors is likely based off of Thorfinn Karselfni's father, Thord Horsehead. Thorkell the Tall was a real person. Canute was a Danish Warrior king.

This anime is absolutely fantastic. It almost makes you forget that this season is JUST the prologue and the entire premise of the overarching story is about pacifism
Yup. Everyone thinking this is hard to top is going to be in for a wild ride. Makes this first half go from an epic tragedy to an edgy teen whining because he's not strong enough in comparison to the rest.. light spoilers:
Some of the funniest moments of vinland saga are adult thorfinn cringing hard when people make him remember how he used to be during his teenage years. It's one of the few moments where huge badass vikings are suddenly really relatable...
@@davepatois297 Yes I definitely agree with you. And also, I love how much development they give to the characters later on as well. It's clear that the years have changed then (except for Thorkell, obviously).

And my favorite moments later on in the series is Floki being all protective of his grandson, dispite being a fierce warrior, and his grandson using that knowledge to stop him from fighting with the aid of Throfinn.
@@artzy_susu7483 i loved this moment as well, and well, thorfinn sparing floki after discovering he was the one who hired askellad to kill his father was a powerful moment. His confrontation barefists against spearboi was also grandiose. «real warriors don't need swords» taken to it's purest form, and a nice way to show us he's still actually getting stronger.

@@davepatois297 Yes, once thorfinn was a pacifist and peaceful, seeing him get so furious was such a heart stopping moment. He didnt lose his strength (obviously since hes also been working on farms), but the ability to not need to get into constant fights to show his strength, but still being fully capable to defeat most anyone makes me so happy
Did you realize in the first scene in episode 1 you can see Thorkell fight at the side of Thors in the War on the ship. Please one extra win

There's a good reason why it's on a lot of peoples' top 10 lists, amazing manga with a stunning anime that makes it justice.
A lot of people thought this anime wondering ever exist, that vinland saga would be stuck in "anime hell" along side berserk, vagabond, kingdom etc
This is a really great way of re watching vinland saga without actually re watching it. Really enjoyable.
You're actually really good at the Vikings Floki voice
The one thing I love about this anime is that nothing is too over the top, and honestly feels like old folk tales about these legendary combatants. Like "I heard Thorkell the tall was so strong he could launch bolders like a catapult." or "I once saw him pitch a spear and skewer 5 people in one throw from nearly a quarter mile away!"
The fact that they used relevant names is a win in my book.
Lots of these names are still used here in scandinavia and Iceland.
Thes best anime of all time is only wins, there are no sins in Vinland Saga

Askeladd wasn’t sick, he seemed to be pretty healthy. His receding hairline just showed he was getting old.
I love how the mangaka could have just made Thorfinn a really skilled vikingr, but decided "You know what? I think he should be a Level 50 Rogue"

Honestly something I didnt think Id like and only picked up cause it mentioned a Island very close to my own but... Wow. So beautiful and so easy yo get invested in every aspect, minimum 9/10 anime. The biggest compliant I have is how the show makes you think you are following Thorfinn's story but in reality that is for the greater part of the first season; not the case. Askeladd however, more than makes up for that deviation in what is seen as the norm. A rich story, a rich design and a rich cast. Do it.
Get ready for Askelchad in the 2nd half he is no longer a lad, he is the chad

Floki form The Vikings tv series is played by gustaf skarsgård and amazing swedish actor part of the skarsgård family one of the most famous swedish familys and you have probably seen gustaf or one of hes brothes mabe even his father in some other pretty big shows/movies for example his youger brother bill plays pennywise and his older brother alexander is perry from little big liesand their father stellan is in just of the top of my head Thor, avengers, Mamma mia, will hunting the chernobly series and more soo yhe just wanted to throw that in LUL

I didn't notice how Bjorn cared for Thorfinn, nice spot. Now I'm even sadder for his death.

One thing I picked up after reading the manga following the anime was that I don't think Askeladd actually wanted to kill Thors, and that his proposal for making Thors leader of the band was for his benefit. If Thors became leader and the band killed Floki, then the blame would have been placed on Askeladd, keeping Iceland out of the conflict. Of course Thors would never have accepted since that would mean more violence and Bjorn didn't understand the situation thinking Askeladd was distracting Thors. You really feel Askeladd's admiration for Thors both in how he told Ari the value of Thors' life and how he didn't stop Thorfinn from killing him in his sleep.
If Askeladd didn't kill Thors the Jomsvikings would have wiped Askeladd and his village off the map.
The indication was always that he didn't really have much of a choice.

Askeladd has been looking for a hero to follow his entire life. He was sincere when he asked Thors to be their leader. But he knew Thors wouldn't accept, and was reminded of his place as a Viking, a pirate and thug, by Bjorn. It's the role he created for himself until the right time came where his hero shows up.
Later when talking about Canute, Askeladd mentions that falling for men like Thors often leads to not getting what you want. And it wasn't until he saw Canute that he decided to take matters into his own hands due to his age.
I think he was disappointed that Thors couldn't be the hero he wanted to follow, but I don't think he regrets killing him. It was unavoidable.
That said, I also believe he kept his son alive and trained him in a way out of his respect for Thors and a desire to one day atone with his life for killing Thors.
But that's just me xD
one thing that I don't think was noticed, was the fact that Askeladd was also moved by Thors in how he when provoked by the young man he doesn't draw his sword, instead he just punches him back, while it could have been easier to just kill him;

Japanese voice actors don't dictate the pronunciation of Scandinavian names.
That would be like a Hollywood Movie based on Sekigahara, not hiring anyone who can pronounce Ieyasu and telling the Japanese that your mispronunciation is correct.
To me watching Torfinn grow up like that is just sad. He went from an innocent little kid to a guy who can stab a hundred men and not feel anything. All for the sake of revenge because he didn't understand his father's last actions

The best anime of 2019. Kimetsu no Yaiba was good, but it doesn't even come close to the prologue of Vinland Saga. In my eyes, Vinland Saga was underrated so much by the shounen hype at the time.
Feelings like in the moment 15:09 describe this show perfectly, Askeladd is such a great character.
I would have agreed if Mob Psycho 💯 season 2 and The Promised Neverland were not aired in 2019

2 Missed win on Bjorn. Berserker's really ate mushrooms to fuel themselves into a battle and when Bjorn does so, he roars and fights with his bare hands, like a bear. Björn and Bjørn mean bear in Swedish and Danish. :D
EDIT like 3 years later: Apparently eating mushrooms was a myth, but his name meaning still holds. :D

Missed one, when Thorfinn Imagines his father on the boat, Thors has some of askaladds mannerism mixed in with his own, its easy to miss on the first viewing.
Askeladd's hair falling out was more setting up how's he's getting old, though him being sick would have been a good plot twist. Also, I think the ferryman was staring at Askeladd's chest because of his Roman type armor. The ferryman was Welsh and had seen that kind of armor before.

They don't really make it clear in the anime but Thorkell is the much younger brother of Thorfinn's grandfather. So when he realized that Thorfinn is Helga and Thors son, he begins to pull his punches, incapacitate rather than kill. Because he doesn't want to kill a family member if he can help it, plus he thinks he might be able to get Thorfinn to join his side.
WAIT! I thought the CGI in ROTSH was pretty good? If that was considered bad I can’t even fathom what amazing CGI looks like ;-;

I like this anime, I watched it all in one binge but it felt like it was tricking us with the pace. It basically went 4ish episodes where almost nothing happens but right before I felt it was slow BOOM you'd get that one episode the was pure gold and kept you going right before another 4 slow
A complete and utter win this series deserves that most hystorical animes don't have the luck of having-an anime adaptation that completely respects, nails and celebrates the source material, and its themes and morals.
Vinland Saga is legit my favorite manga series so far-it has a beautiful moral message about self-improvement and the power compassion can have over violence, and how rage and hatred can consume us and destroy us.
From what I’ve seen from this story although the settings way different the dynamic of the kid and the older guy remind me a lot of guts and his father figure during guts’s childhood at the start of golden age

Vinland saga is what got me into manga, it's my favorite manga of all time the character development is just insane unfortunately the entire first season of the anime is just the prologue.

This is by far the dumbest thing I've heard all day.
I could tell from the accent you were from somewhere in East Anglia, same. I also got very hyped when that location card came up
I honestly would have complained if you wouldn't have mentioned the scream in the OP ... it feels more like metal core since there is also clear singing and the scream isn't as dreadful as I do like my death metal. Although I would have loved a comment on how the OP music pretty much foreshadows the whole psychological decline the Thorfinn is about to go through!
At first he's just your typical sheltered rebellious little boy who would have grown into a proper man at some point but due to witnessing all those horrors at such a young age before having the opportunity to build deep and meaningful relationships with his family whom he kinda rebels against at that time except for his dad Thors the Troll (pretty sure this is a historical figure as well?). He is losing it all and having no safety net to get him back on earth hyper fixates on killing Askeladd. The scream in the end of the OP just feels like it's the voices Thorfinn hears all day and since there is no one to tell him that he doesn't have to listen to that any more he well ... just goes full psycho until the very end. I loved this little detail, when music is actually used in a meaningful way, not just to support the visuals but to transport it's own message.
Also I loved Askeladd ... him wearing that Roman piece of armour made me suspicious of him the whole time until we got to see his connection to Wales and got to put all the pieces together in that moment. Just wished he'd go ahead and build a more meaningful relationship with Thorfinn and teaching him proper Swordsmanship as Askeladd certainly know some.
