For those of us on a budget, I cannot afford a kit, However, scissor jacks have a nice acme thread, and a matching nut, Some have a six-sided end to use a lug wrench, and some have a flat, with a hole in it, (for a 'Tommy Bar), depending on the desired use. The junk yard will let them go for pennies on the dollar as compared to a kit, ,, , Although the travel might not be sufficient for a large vice, they are ample for building a small vice or two, or three. That is a nice looking bench. I am curious to know what stabilizes the bottom of the chop (I think you called it)? Now that you have used this bench for a while, would you change anything? Why?

I love it. If I were to have one leg vise on my bench that would be the one. I don't think I would buy the wheel. I think I would rather have a wooden hub as you can get more leverage on that. But other than that it is fantastic. Still run smooth and clamps incredibly hard. I did a video about 2 years after making the bench with updates on the bench. That's one that I definitely would not change.
The Workbench is looking better with each new addition :) Looking forward to how you use it for future projects and what needs adapting to suit your work style if anything. It looks as though you have most angles covered.
@@WoodByWright I think the shoulder drill would be a bit too awkward to use doing top-down work unless you are on the pieces itself. Both will have their uses is my guess.

LOL for the intro and outtro I had to move it to get the camera shot and it is leveled for one spot on the floor. that did not match the spot I moved it to.

I am just laying out my new Hovarter lag vise installation and the instructions give hole sizes for the shaft and bearing but not distance from the top of the vise. How many inches from the top did you bore your shat hole? I am thinking if it is too close to the top the hand wheel might get in the way sometimes.
That's really a personal preference. It depends on the size of your leg and how much working space you want between the screw in the top of the bench. For me I like it to be down at least 6 in if not a little more.
A real stunning piece of work James! If I had the room in my work shop, I'd consider building something similar myself. A great Heirloom for certain. Can't wait to see the projects that you come up with using that work bench.............Way to go................Steve

I didn't update video a couple years back. But to this day it works perfectly. If I want to put a leg vise on a bench this is probably the one I'm going to go with. However I'm going to get one with a wooden rod handle instead of the wheel. The wheel doesn't give you as much leverage. And it isn't quite as comfortable to turn down as it would be to have a rod sticking out you can turn.
I really love how your passion shows and there is no doubt that it is truly genuine! This chop is just as beautiful as the other one. A quick question about butterflies... does the sharp inside corner provide a weak spot or does the tightness of the joint with the grains running opposite prevent that from happening? just curious if they make a shorter swing brace for those tight spots...
thanks, frank. to be perfectly honest there is so little pressure applied to it even on the worst joints that a 1/16" wide strip of maple would hold the strange. so sharp corner or not it is far bigger than it needs to be.

Looks awesome! Hard to tell but it looks like the bow ties were very close to original thickness of the board. I really like the contrast of the cherry to bow ties. Oh, maybe you should do an epoxy project so you can have an excuse to create epoxy shavings. Maybe a hexagonal bowl of epoxy with wood curls in it.

thanks. those go by many names. the Dutchman name was actually a directive name saying that the dutch woodworker was too cheap to use good lumber. they would fix up the cheap cracked stuff. fut I have heard them called a half dozen different names.
Beautiful vise James! I am in the process of building my bench , and wondered if you might tell me what minimum diameter you would recommend for a leg vise screw. I have access to a threading box for an 1 1/2" dowel , and I would really like to use that from a cost saving and satisfaction standpoint. Do you think that would be acceptable? Thanks , and again , beautiful vise , and overall work.
Thanks. 1 1/2" is strong enough as long as you have > 3" of nut threading on to it. The only down side is if the Chop is too heavy it may sag under the weight when all the way out. If you make it out of hard maple it should be ok though.

I don't remember the exact measurement. The I placed the clutch about 1 in below the bench top and put the hole there. The farther down you put it the more work you can fit in the vise. However if you put it down too far then you don't have as much clamping force.
Hi James, I'm building a Roubo and can't decide between the Benchcrafted leg & tail vise or the Hovarter brand. I really like the quick release mechanism of Hovarter. Which one would you prefer? Any regrets with Hovarter? Thanks /John
my only regret is that I did not put the Hovarter on all my vises. I am still thinking of switching them out for it. I would have gotten the wooden hub instead. the wheel is just a pain to grab. but more force then I need and moves like an angel! I could not be happier.

Hi James! I'm getting my basics into my shop and am feeling like a leg vise is necessary. How are you liking your hovarter a year on? All I seem to see elsewhere is benchcrafted but they are so expensive - hard when I also want to be able to get a low angle jack...
My workflow focuses mainly on the end vice. I can do pretty much anything with that so it's just faster and easier to use the end vice. I use the leg vices when I want to show something they use there. But it's not very often. There's a thousand different ways to work around a bench. And everyone has their own method and how they like to do it.

I am curious how the vice has held up, have you had any issue with the mechanism failing after years without a screw mechanism?

Does turning the handle just lock the vise or lock and tighten it?
It tightens it up. You have any point about one inch of movement in the handle rotation.

For the end vice I put it on both. For a leg vice I just put it on the vice jaw side

Can you use a lacquer or polyurethane on top of wood that you put in oil finish on like linseed oil
you can but you have to wait till it cures (1-2 weeks) other wise you can give it a quick wash with shellac then apply your protective finish.

it is a clutch. there is a keyway in the shaft so that engage when turned.

yup. I just flattened the holly so I could keep as much thickness as possible. I like the Hexagonal bowl idea!

Do you run into any blotching issues when finishing Cherry with BLO? If so, do you ever use a seal coat of 1# cut of shellac?
I do from time to time. more so on kiln dried wood then air dried. But I actually like the look. so no I do not seal coat anything.
