  • What is the big deal about getting older? We all do it and there is no stopping it. So, why are we so reluctant to admit that we are aging and that we might have to make some changes if we want to keep doing the things we love?

Am 78 yo. still riding my Honda.
I do a 15' walk each day, before breakfast, then after breakfast, a 30' bicycle ride.
My day starts at 5:30 am.
My Honda ride is in the afternoon.
Greetings y'all from Melbourne. Australia. It's our Summertime over here, in the big brown - lucky country.
Yep, age is a number alright, but you gotta 'work on it'
Cycling helps me stay 'loose' in my hinges.
And would rather ride my motorcycle than do crossword puzzles, or wordsearch puzzles. 😊

Some people don't get to be old. I could have died at 14 from cancer, but i didn't. Every day "above ground" is a Ferris Bueller day! "What are we not going to do today" has become one of my favorite sayings! I have three weeks off from work as of last Friday, and I'm enjoying it. Went out for a 145-mile ride yesterday and enjoyed the sights and scents!

66 years old, and a good reminder about as we age, changes to make. Sold the HD Sport Glide at 695#, replaced it with a BMW 2022 RT with a 49 L topbox. 615#. Felt like I made a good change, I've done many more long trips with 300 mile days on the RT, something I never felt like doing on the Sport Glide.

You are correct and I wish I was younger too just so that I would have more years ahead of me to ride but because that isn't a reality I want to optimize my current abilities so that I can ride more now as well as years ahead and enjoy all of life more fully.

You & I share many things in common. I was a gym rat for many years. I have discovered that there are only so many revolutions in a bearing life. Your body is very similar. A new bearing takes a while to wear in. Then it runs flawlessly over its time. Then it begins to fade and gets wobbly and worn. You have to be able to recognize when it starts happening to your body and realize that there are only so many revolutions in your old bearings. Staying active is more important than beating up the bearings. So use those last remaining revolutions wisely!

Thank you for another fine video. Interesting thoughts, and great vision. 71 here, and riding most days, and recognise much of what you say. I couldn't help noticing "accommodation" lacking one 'm' at 2:32, but that's a word many get wrong.
I went into a country hotel once in South Australia, and asked for accommodation, and added "but we don't want to be put into a coma".
"You what"? she asked. There had been a beautifully hand painted sign out the front, all in 'heritage' green, cream and maroon, and it had THREE spelling errors, in one word! "Acomadation" it offered, in fantastic vintage artwork. You'd have to feel for the skilled artist, if anyone got bold enough to tell him...
I should go back there one day, to see if they ever changed it.

Excellent video. I am 75 and just started riding a motorcycle this past spring. I lost my wife 4 years ago to breast cancer. Her last night she told me she wanted me to live “our full life”. I am doing this for her and for me. This fall I was in the emergency room with a herniated disc. The doctors, after two CAT scans determined i either had multiple myeloma cancer or metastatic cancer as lesions are on my spine. After further PET scans, biopsies of the lesions, my bone marrow and other tests the result came back…no cancer anywhere. So why the lesions? The pathologists and other doctors are scratching their heads. My family physician stated it clearly. Some people age in different ways, you are aging losing some bone. He checked with a bone specialist and reported back…”you are not at increased risk of fracture! Just don’t speed on that thing!” I immediately purchased another motorcycle and now have two in storage at the dealership until spring here in the Northeast. Motorcycling allows me to feel my young age and let me fulfill my wife’s message to me. Thanks for you good video. Uplifting and true!

At 68 I have had to learn the limits that age has imposed, however I have found that I can ride, or usually outride my younger riding companions. It’s not because I’m physically more capable, it’s a combination of experience and mindset. I ride an Indian Pursuit…not a small bike for sure, however it’s a really comfy bike and keeps me feeling better on the long rides we usually take. I don’t put myself in situations that I know I am unable to control my bike. Especially the slow speed maneuvering that seems to get most of us. Your advice is both sage and worth listening too. I am. Big believer in not letting the old man in…despite waning physical prowess. Ride safe

We love our lifestyle, but we realize that the older we get, the less we care about what others think. Lol. We have been retired for 10 years and enjoy what we do. We know that as we age, we will slow down and still enjoy life to the fullest. As you mentioned, my mind says, "Go, go, go!" but my body says, "Hey, wait a minute... You know I can't do that." Great video and scenery.

I totally agree! Accept and adept. Some months ago I attended church what I do on a regular basis. The reverend held a sermon about death and dying. Her message was that knowing you will die sooner or later makes you realise how costly life is and to make the best of it. Our aging body (I am 70) is like an old car. Maintaining it well gives you a better chance to stay healthy and be able to squeeze your lemon.

I'll be 64 in February. My wife and I ride together on our 761lb BMW R18. I have been working out all my life and continue to workout 3 days a week in my home gym. I eat the best I can, supplement with vitamins and minerals, I follow a holistic approach to life.I focus on keeping the stress out, I only drink a glass or 2 of wine per month. I read and research to stay sharp. I drink plenty of water. I practice on a Gibboard to preserve my balance. I don't take chances on the road. I visit my chiropractor twice a month. We just purchased a Human touch massage chair to keep the bodies circulation optimal. I jump on a rebounder to keep my lymphatic system flowing. All of this to stay healthy so I can ride another day. One more thing, I had cancer in my 30s and beat it.I haven't seen a doctor since then.I take care of my own health.I don't take vaccinations, I'm am not on any medication and I mean zero nada. This is why I'm alive and healthy today. I didn't tell you this to brag about what I do.I'm only telling you this because it takes work and dedication. If you're not dedicated to your health and willing to research ways to stay healthy then don't complain why you are not fit enough to ride until you are 100 😂

good message. i have a similar background to you as i was a powerlifter in my 20s, i've trained in several martial arts, and i'm even a former motor cop. i just got back into riding this summer after a decade or maybe more away from motorcycles. i'm also 70 and still train. doing so is the closest thing to a fountain of youth that i'm aware of. i make no guarantees about longevity because there are too many variables that can upset that applecart. but maintaining your health, and respecting some diminishment of physical skills will allow most to continue doing the things they enjoy well past the point where many people throw in the towel and say 'no mas'.

As long as we’re on this topic, what’s working for me is: Faith in God and in our divine purpose - big picture stuff, living true to myself, my wife and I living debt-free and below our means, finding that love is a gift for giving, and In the words of Neil Diamond that I like to think applies to me; “He found the life that he was after/Filled it up with love and laughter/Finally got it right and made it fit. Understanding our limits, and operating within them is not weakness. Accepting when we truly get to the point we have to give something up is not weakness. Denying the effects of aging, fighting against it to the point of harm or failure or allowing the effects of aging to stop us before it should is weakness. Developing strategies to manage our aging, developing humility and grace around an honest assessment of ourselves is strength. Arrogance and clinging to fantasy is weakness.

I'm 55 I work for a Railroad on the maintenance side of things. Most of the time I operate a flatbed semi truck on rail pulling gondolas full of new ties and an excavator. I travel the same equipment on the road to whatever location it's needed. I live in northern Utah. My work takes me as far east as Chicago, south to Texas and all the Western states to the coast. 15 yrs ago even 5 years ago. I could do 18 hr drives and 14 hr rides to and from work. I've accepted the fact that I can't do that anymore. It can become stressful doing a hard push to be at work. As I become tired I'm prone to mistakes while traveling. Also to be on my A game first day back to work for an 8 day on duty cycle. I need mental and physical rest. I'm still riding my 14 Vision and pulling my bushtec trailer. Yesterday was cold and damp and I enjoyed my hour ride very much. Today promises snow so ... Not sure if a ride will happen.

Let's discuss understanding reality. There is reality, and then there is the story we tell ourselves constantly. At seventy-two, there are things I can't do that I did when I was thirty. Here's the thing, however, I don't need to. As we age, we must be willing, to some extent, do some of the things we did when we were much younger. Eat well, exercise regularly, sleep, and compete, if only with our younger self. I have nothing else to prove to anyone, but I'm constantly looking for ways to surprise me. Remember, if we don't wade into the realm of the impossible, we will never know what is still possible. Growing older is a fact of life; feeling and acting old is optional.

If you take care of yourself, you can do LOTS of stuff young people think we ancients can't! I'm 86 and I can still kick start my modified Norton, which is almost 900cc. If I ever find I can't start the Norton, I have a BMW and a Guzzi which have electric starters. I ride twice a week and still do about 8-10,00 miles per year...and those are done on our gorgeous NZ South Island backroads. One note for anybody riding longer distances: Ride for 45-50 minutes/hour and get OFF the bike for those other 10-15 minutes...stretch out and drink some water This way, you can ride all day and not be exhausted. Riding good, exhaustion bad!! And remember, the only alternative to growing old just plain sucks...

That's what my mom says. "You don't know what old is." Of course she said that at 65 too...

But when we die...We have a choice to spend eternity...with GOD or apart from him! ...When we ask Jesus to forgive us our sins and invite Jesus into our hearts, we can all enjoy eternal life in Heaven. Read John 3:16, ride safe and Have a Blessed Christmas.

Ride safe
