DIY Cane Rattan Bed Hack For Under £60

I'm sure many of you have a bed that you could 'hack' in some way and if you have a wooden bed this is quite an easy hack to do and all for under £50. Of course if you need to buy a bed first then that will be an additional cost.

I bought 5 feet of the 'Six way weave cane panelling standard 1/2 inch spacing' in the 18" width
(I paid by card over the phone and it arrived within about 4 working days)
I used a heavy duty stapler (which we already had) to attach the cane to the headboard but you could use adhesive and a wooden frame to sandwich the cane to the headboard as another option.

My 13yr old son has been asking to change his room from a kid's style to more of a teenage hangout. I showed him this video and he loved the paint and rattan, thanks for making this easy for us. Best part is, he wants to diy it himself, with a little help from us. Thanks for the inspiration and inspiring him!

Really enjoy these creative videos DIY! so much more fun and realistic for the average person than just hiring expensive decorators and buying furniture all done up already.....
For an even more finished look take a couple more of those strips, paint them and apply to the top and bottom on the back to cover the edges. Beautiful job!

Great DIY! Our bed has a cane rattan headboard too, and it has aged so well! We bought it in 1980 and it is still looks new, believe it or not! :) Even though we constantly sit against it with bit cushions when reading etc in the evenings. Beds were made to last a lifetime, back then. Vintage quality is amazing! At the time my mother-in-law was concerned the rattan wouldn't last long but it did. I'm glad that cane rattan is back in fashion as we have a chest of drawers and a wardrobe in another room as well, still in perfect condition.

Love the cane lamp with the cane bed. Don’t change it. The bed turned out beautifully.
Emma, this definitely looks amazing! Love the colour scheme you chose for your renovation and the huge amount of DIYs you do! Personally I would add some panel to the backside of the headboard, thus a person can seat and not break the construcción. Maybe would pain it black for contrast.
It really sets the whole tone of the room, nice work!

love love the idea , would of put an original bed slat in the middle for stronger support (and the width matches the sides ) but that's just me - sorry Emma x

Rachael Jones that was the first idea that stroke my mind: will the construction hold the person sitting in bed? Would definitely add some support on the backside.

Looks great! Will keep this in mind for the future, I've also seen good diys that put cane in the panels of wardrobes or doors which looks really nice as well.

That’s amazing Emma! Where did you get the idea from? I was worried that the rattan would be too flimsy as a headboard when sitting up in bed but the fact that you put the extra wood strips on the frame and the middle section of wood was genius. It looks so stylish.

Jennifer Berensen just with some no nails on the ends and then when I was stapling I stapled the joins for extra security 👍🏼

Did you do the lampshade? Headboard looks brilliant. You should do an epicycle bedside table with just a little bit of Rattan to match the headboard. that would look really good. OR a chair in black with some Rattan,

Well you both have done wonders really you have ! I bought my bedroom furniture from And So To Bed ny bed has that same looking headboard but wow it cost an arm n leg !!!!! Your bed looks amazing well done !. Going off the subject I have a farm and a herd of deer are taking cover under my hedge away from this wind they are beatiful about 30 of them I'm creeping around taking pics of them. What an amazing hack! Looks incredible! Could I just ask, how did you secure the batton in the middle please? I know you were able to no-nails and nail the side ones in to the side of the bed, but how did you secure the middle one please? Thank you!! xx
I popped a couple of staples in from the back and cut it really tight so it was wedged in (with a lil no nails) 👍 Then stapled the cane all the way down the middle too (so hopefully it stays in 🤣)

How did you attach the middle support beam-did you nail it into something (and how at that angle), or just wood glue? Thanks! Edit: also, can you lean against that as a headboard, or is it not strong enough? Looks beautiful, regardless.
I cut it really tight and then popped a little glue on top and bottom and then stapled a few staples top and bottom before stapling the can to it 👍

Lydia Carels You could fix plywood behind it (painted the same colour as the wall) to create a solid back.
We will have to wait and see and update you guys if it doesn't hold out 👍
