    Thank you, I have one ordered as my arms are getting tired from hand carding from scratch

    This is such a nice design! I'm trying to figure out how to make my own and this is the best design I've seen so far, with the interlocking parts to keep it together. Did you use a router to make the grooves?

      Frances Carter Thanks Frances! Yes I used a router to make the channels, very carefully as I don't have much experience with one! I did a couple of practice goes on a bit of scrap first to make sure it went ok, I think there can be a risk of tearing out the thin strip of wood it leaves at the edge, so perhaps do a few passes getting a bit deeper each time to be safe. Hope that helps, good luck with your project!

    What amazing Craftsmanship. I just watched another video and they ordered theirs. Their nails were sharper but the design was pretty much the same. Their ends didn't coome off... Brilliant for you. Did the sliding and picking action get easier as the wood became used and the nails coated? I think your pickbox is amazing!

      Deanna Stevens thanks so much for your lovely comments. The grooves that the handle runs in are waxed to make them run smoothly, and once they warm up with the friction it does help. I have seen the nails sharpened using a drill and stone, and if I need to replace them eventually I'll do that. It works fine for now so it would be interesting to see if it makes much of a difference.

      That's great. I would never have thought of waxing. Great idea. I showed your video and a couple others to my Husband so he can make me one. I was recently given 15 fleeces from a local sheep grower. I have a lot ofwork cut out for me and I don't have any supplies except hot water and soap. :)
      Thank you for a great video.

    Could you maybe give us the supplies list and even just the general hand-drawn plans?

    What size nails did you use, this is glorious and very fun, thank you for showing me how this works!

      Thanks, I think they were about 3.5" - 4" long, the longest I could find without a galvanised coating. I have seen some people grind each nail so the end is smooth and finer too, if you can imagine doing all those!

      @@ottercopscrafts thank you so much!!!! I am just learning about prepping wools, was there a pattern you went off from? Thank you for responding too. I just started prepping for my local farms,

      @@pixgeekphotography I had looked at different types of picker and had trouble finding someone who was making them. I like woodworking anyway so decided to have a go! I bought a board that was about 8" by about 40" and worked the design to fit the board. The hardest part was not tearing out the edges when I routered the channels for the lid to run in, probably would recommend using a hardwood if you can! Best of luck!

    Where did you get this wool picker and what did it cost?

    • @ottercopscrafts
      @ottercopscrafts 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The picker cost very little as I made it myself. The wood cost about £12, the nails about the same, and the hardware probably the same again. The varnish was some we already had so all in all it cost about £40 tops! Took a while to work out the design, and I would grind the nails smooth and more pointy if I was to do it again, but it works well enough. Thanks for your comment.

      Hello there, I have been researching wool pickers for weeks now, with the desire to make my own, as they're so pricey to by. Feel like I've got tines imprinted on my brain. Your little picker is inspiring, well done you!!!
