My grandfather worked in the Barrow in Furness shipyards and was a young man when Copperknob was retired and installed in its glass case. He told me about its history when I was a nipper. I'll never forget the pride he had for the engine, and its lucky survival of the bombing. It would be many years before I saw it in person in the National Collection, complete with dents and holes from 1942. Thanks for preserving it.

That old Number 3 knows the key to the best revenge , and that is standing tall and strong after such adversity . That's the perfect Locomotive to have housed in the museum to show the pride of your nation as well as the pride of the Victorians .

I know why - thank you!

The foresight of those people, many years ago, to preserve a cornerstone of the industrial age, is to be commended. It would be interesting to discover who was responsible for the decision to preserve the loco.
I noticed that the bar frame design had no cruciform crosspieces, to brace the forces of diagonal movement.
Before the invention of the modern steam locomotive water injector device, I assume the system of providing water to the boiler was a matter of the seat of the pants intuition.
The practice of some drivers of adjusting the tension on the safety value spring, to produce more power to maintain the timetable, using poor coal, or climbing a grade, snd ending a shift and forgetting to reset the valve, by a frost-bitten and sodden driver or fireman, needing a strong cup of tea to be able to hold a pencil to sign off, must have caused some disquiet.
To be able to operate a loco at the time, was a belief of the railway company, which thought that providing protection to the driver would lull him into a state of overconfidence in the dynamic situation around him, of course, we now know this idea is counterproductive and dangerous.
I hope to see more videos of this type in the future, if possible.

First time I;ve seen this video, When it was at HAverthwaite for the Furnes sRailway 150 celebrations, a few modelling friends had the opportunity to look under the loco and tender. They knew Coppernob is not painted in FR Red. They found the genuine colour behind the frames of the tender. Much more rich purply red than that orange. Similar to haematite in fact

It's so thought forward to not to restore the locomotive at any point, but leave it as it is, even after the bombing.
This way all of it's original features are preserved, and it may be one of the most original locomotives of the early days of the railways.

    • @jobeygeorge2402
      @jobeygeorge2402 2 ปีที่แล้ว

It was stored at Crewe Locomotive Works for the remainder of the war. My guess is that it was under the ownership of the L.M.S. Railway-I know they sent Coppernob, along with the old express engine Columbine, to represent them at the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley in 1925 and I believe it was already considered one of the L.M.S.'s small collection of preserved engines.
While scrap metal was indeed at a premium during the war, the U.K. was already committed to the preservation of certain historic machines. Many of them were taken from display at industrial sites (often locomotive works, like the L.N.E.R.'s large collection that later formed the nucleus of the N.R.M.) and stored in more remote regions for the war precisely for fear they would be damaged by air raids. Coppernob, of course, being the pride of Barrow-in-Furness, was defiantly kept in place at his station until it was destroyed. Gallant old thing!

Flying Scotsman started a US tour in 1969. Duchess of Hamilton (6229) toured in 1939, renumbered 6220 to assume the identity of Coronation. In the 1980s and 1990s, our Rocket replica and J52 tank engine (1247) visited. Our GWR 6000 class King George V also popped over in 1927 for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad’s centenary celebrations.

It's a flash frame of Bruce Springsteen aka "The Boss" which is shown whilst he's talking about the boss.
And actually there's no specific law preventing the use of subliminal images in something like this, at least in the UK. They're only explicitly illegal in advertising. A googling reveals the US (and TH-cam is a US company) has no laws against them at all from what I can see.
Because the use here is comedic it's fully allowable under freedom of expression. The only legal issue I can imagine is that the image may be copyrighted and used without permission.

A bunch the neat German historical stuff from Medieval times to WW1 was destroyed in a museum in Dresden Germany during the war and amongst the collection was the only surviving WW1 Fokker Eindecker from the great war as the Allies made the Germans destroy most of their military stuff from the period after they signed the Armistice. Not sure on what else was lost besides armour, swords & the like. War only accomplishes one thing destruction.

Ginger haired man presents a video entitled 'Coppernob'. I was expecting a whole other kind of video. :-)

Please decide which camera you're going to address, and use the footage from that camera. It's incredibly distracting and disengaging when you suddenly look away and you're not talking to the viewer any more.
