  • Solutions and alternatives to the lack of GPS data in GoPro's 2023 model.
Update! The newer GoPro HERO13 Black has GPS!
    Tools:
    - Telemetry Overlay Trial: goprotelemetry...
    - Telemetry Overlay Full: goprotelemetry...
    - Compatible formats and devices: goprotelemetry...
    - GPS Logger for Android: play.google.co...
    - GPX Trail Tracker for iOS: apps.apple.com...
    - Virb Edit alternative for cycling: goprotelemetry...
    - Dashware alternative for OBDII and trackday data: goprotelemetry...
    - Aviation overlays: goprotelemetry...
    - Telemetry Extractor for converting GoPro (and more cameras) GPS and sensor data to file formats like GPX, CSV, KML, JSON...: goprotelemetry...
The HERO12 Black is the first GoPro flagship in a very long time without GPS capabilities
Is this the end of data overlays?
The 12 still records orientation, g-forces, and camera settings
And you can record the GPS data externally and sync it to the video in Telemetry Overlay. How?
The easiest way is to record a GPX file with your iPhone or Android phone
On iPhone, you can use the GPX Trail Tracker app. For best results, set the app Distance filter to zero and export a GPX with TrackPoints, not WayPoints
On Android, the GPS Logger app works well. The default settings are fine (1-second interval, no filters), but enabling EGM96 is recommended
See links to download them in the video description
Once you have your video and GPX files, import one and then the other in Telemetry Overlay… and boom.
The easiest way to keep the video and the data in sync is to start both the GoPro and the GPS recording at the same time.
You can also keep the camera time updated by regularly connecting the GoPro to its app, and then syncing to the video timestamp or creation time.
See other synchronisation techniques in the sync tutorial: • Synchronization - Tele...
For more advanced work, you can use trackers designed specifically for your activity. For example,
Garmin trackers record metrics like heart rate, cadence, or power, for sports like cycling or running
OBD2 adapters can send RPM, pedals, temperatures, pressures from almost any car model to a phone app
Aviation instruments record precise pitch and roll, airspeed, barometric elevation and so on. Hundreds of devices are compatible with Telemetry Overlay!
But having the GPS data embedded into the video was convenient, right?
Well, you can still get a HERO11 Black, with practically the same hardware as the HERO12, plus the best GPS module any GoPro ever had
DJI also introduced their first GPS-capable action cam with the Osmo Action 4. Early analysis shows great data quality. Don’t forget to use their GPS remote.
The same applies to Insta360 cameras. The GPS remote is compatible with many of their models, 360 or not.
Interestingly, old GoPro cameras like the HERO4 Silver, Black, and HERO5 Session could be connected to a Polar watch like the V800 to record basic fitness metrics like speed, altitude, or heart rate. This does not seem possible with the HERO 12.
In any case, the possibilities are endless.
Stay tuned for more analysis and tutorials!

What a dumb decision to completely remove GPS… maybe in the future with a remote as DJI does it. For now, happy with the GoPro 11 👍

what a briliant vid! I downloaded the GPX data from my Speed Puck which has GPS, and imported it into the Tel Overlay. It works!! Fantastic because I have the DJI Osmo 3 which has no GPS. I don't get how the manufacturers of these action cams can't understand the importance of this feature. Anyway, a thousand thanks tor your tip!!

Great tips! I'm sticking with the GoPro Hero 11 for the forseeable future. The Hero 12 is a step backwards, in my opinion.
I frequently combine the GPX data from my Garmin Zumo into Telemetry Overlay for my mororcycle videos. Using a phone app is a good backup plan or as an alternative for users who don't have a dedicated GPS unit.
Thanks again for such a great software solution! Cheers! 😉👍 --QuasiMotard

My thoughts exactly, regarding the 11 and moto videos.
I appreciate Juan's explaining the work-arounds now, but it certainly seems like a step backward to me. I started recording with a Hero4 and an iPhone (6?), and was thrilled, with later GoPro models, that I could put my phone away, i.e., use only one device. And now GoPro would require me to start up and power two devices again? Not for me.
I went from that Hero4 to a 7 (GPS), to a 9 (lean angle), to an 11 (better GPS, some other improvements). But that's it -- my GoPro-buying days are now finished.

I think GoPro decided in favor of battery life in the 12 over GPS. Which is why I use my watch. It's always with me, captures the whole activity even if I'm not taking video and happily shares with Relive, other apps, etc...
Plus Juan made it really easy to sync 👍

I'm disappointed, I bought Gopro 12 and found out that I won't have aerial overlays on the video (I'm an aviator). For me, this camera is becoming worthless. I can't return it because it shows signs of use, but I've already bought 11 and 12 is for sale...
GoPro, instead of slightly enlarging the housing (larger battery and better cooling), simply trims the equipment, which is bad!

Is it possible to add the telemetry from other phone and add like u did but including g forces and other stuff there is available on go pro 12? Or this GPS Trail Tracker is better? I also have a Garmin 945 is it possible to add data from the watch as well? My goal here is for go karts so i need speed, g-force, map circuit, altimeter and BPM. Can you help me buddy? Many tks

The GoPro Hero 12 Black has no GPS, but...I returned mine for a full refund! No GPS remote or Quik app GPS functionality makes this model worthless to me with all the firmware features added compared to the hero 11. The camera still overheats even without the GPS and battery life is the same or worse than the hero 10 black in many normally used settings not lab conditions. GoPro is shooting itself in the foot. It's nice to have third party apps but I'm not spending all that money on a camera to have to do additional work to add temeletry data.

How about GPS data in EXIF of image and video? Is there an easier way to add the location data to images and videos from GoPro Hero 12?

    • @TelemetryOverlay
      @TelemetryOverlay  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

I'm not sure. I know some users initially thought the HERO12 had a GPS antenna because photos were geo-tagged, but the data must have been coming from the GoPro app or from uploading the photos to Google and it geo-tagging based on identifiable locations in the pictures. Sorry I can't be more specific
