  • My friend Melony is honoring me with a lesson on how to put quilt borders on like a pro. Prevent puddling and extra fabric on the borders when quilts are going to be quilted. Yes, people there is a technique to doing borders. All these years and I was doing them wrong. Who would of though?

    You are the first person that I have ever heard explain why you use the measurement from the center. The fact that the ends stretch more makes so much sense. Thanks!!!

      Yeah I didn't know either! I would think that if each block is the same its all the same! But as you could see my quilt was larger in some side than others! 💕

    You are a riot! So real and honest. You talk just like my friends I quilt with... and your friendship with Melody is obviously endearing. What nice friends. Although I knew parts of what you cover, I picked up a couple of new tips and I completely enjoyed myself watching your video. Learning to quilt is all about the back and forth between those who know and those who are learning. The generosity of your spirits is wonderful to watch. Love your bug in the corner. I have never subscribed to a channel, but I think I may just to see what you come up with next. And I plan to watch all your old ones. Hope your husband treasures you. Thanks much

    Brilliant. This is one of those simple things that you never think of and when you see the video you're like "Duh...why didn't I think of that?" I mean I KNOW my quilt is off square after I add a border because it gets wonky when I press. Now I will change how I add borders. Thank you Lorena and Melony!

    This is a greatly needed video for many quilters/piecers. I feel fortunate to have had my mom start me on my quilting path. She taught me to do this and I always pin my borders after matching centers and quarters. Good borders can fix/hide a lot of piecing issues. ;)

    Muchas gracias Lorena, this was so helpful! I just sewed on my first border and it was wavy but your Video taught me how to try again tomorrow! I really like how Melanie spread the border fabric across and then cut it instead of measuring it and then measuring out the border fabric. Thank you again!.

    Bless you ladies. I have just finished wrestling a wavy border quilt (I made it) on my longarm. I needed to learn how to make sure my borders have no fullness, and this explains it perfectly! Thankyou so much! I did not realize how important this technique is until I got my own longarm and started quilting my own quilts. Oh those wavy borders!!!

    I learned to quilt by reading old quilting magazines back in the 90's. Never did they teach this. I've been doing it wrong forEVER! I'm just shaking my head thinking of all the quilts I had to block to get them flat before they went on the longarm. Sheesh! Your videos are wonderful tools for learning! Awesome video Lorena and Melanie! I was taught the method of measure/average but I like this method better-no measuring tape or math needed. Even though taught correctly, I've been doing the "lazy way" like you Lorena because I didn't realize how severe of an effect it would have on quilting. I'm so glad I watched your previous video before I took something in to my quilter. She is a no no nonsense kind of person and would probably not quilted it. I lay my quilt on the floor and measure in the center, then I cut the border to the measurements which is a real pain because my cutting table is 23 inches long and I have to fold the fabric and do a bunch of math when all this time I could have just cut the border while I was already on the floor measuring my quilt.
    Thank you. I can't wait to do it this way instead.

    My mom is from the "old school" of how to put borders on all that miter crap and measure in 3 places. So after I've been quilting now for about 10 years and I've won several ribbons thank you very much. I ask why would you miter your borders ? Are you mitering the corners as well ? Most the time I get a no, so then they try to sell me on this theory that it looks better, really I say horse hockey on this, my main complaint is that by using miters you are instantly adding bias and what does bias do ? I adds fullness to the quilt so rock on with straight line stitching for borders, then we get to the famous measure 3 places divide and cut your border, they she (my Mom) pins the son of bitch onto the quilt and eases as needed, the very definition of easing is ADDING FULLNESS !!!. I finally have convinced her to do it my way which is the body of your quilt should already be pretty good if you have done a half way decent job, next I just slap those bad boys down and with each layer the border fabric and the quilt I sew it on making sure it is leaving the backside of the needle still in a straight line, and I have an ever so slight tautness, not pulling, but not flying freely about. Anyway not to toot my own horn, but it's me so I'm going to toot I rarely ever have any fullness in my borders. And I recommend this to all my clients especially if they are notorious for having wavy borders, I just tell them it is a shame they've done such a good job with the quilt to only let the borders beat you. Most take my advice and some don't hey I'm not God :) Ok I just saw right off the bat about those mitered joining of borders, so I guess I'll go back and watch the rest, yes I wrote this with out watching the full video first:)
    P.S. Just now made it to minute 4:45 and you used the dreaded EASE word. Had to stop. I would make videos, but honey I'm know my strong suits and I have a face and body made for radio if you catch my drift. I'm a 50ish grumpy old man that lives alone with my little dog Nikko.

  • @TinekeWilliams
    @TinekeWilliams 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Never made a mitered join, no one ever told me so it always looks gorgeous, whatever works. But the top being tighter than the border is terrible for a long armed, don’t do it. Borders need to be tighter than the top. And I always mitre the corners, so easy to do!

    Hi Lorena; I have enjoyed watching your videos you explain them so good. I love this cross quilt that Melony and You are showing how to pin your borders on. Can you tell me where I can get the pattern for it? Thank You for all of Your hard work on showing the videos.

    Hi Lorena, I am new to your channel, love watching your tutorials, and listening to you accent. I was wondering if using Wonder Clips would be better than pins. Pins I feel take up some space and don't allow for true fabric spacing. Please give me your thoughts and keep up the great job.

    • @ToniNov25

      I do think wonder clips would work better. My friend did say the needle did take some space.. I never thought that wonder clips will keep the fabric together better.

    Hi ladies. I just finished a quilt that was measured just like this, but there was a piano key border that I quilted heavily and obviously encountered stretching ( I do my own quilting on a domestic machine) . Of course, I get the piece done and it’s beautiful but the borders are a bit wavy. Heartbreaking.

    • @ToniNov25
      @ToniNov25  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s okay as she washes it or the quilt is washed it should take in that waviness

    Such a great video! May I ask what the pattern is called? The quilt is absolutely beautiful and I'd love to make one as well. Thank you!

      It’s called a repeating cross .. I think I have the pattern or parts of a pattern on a blog post .. called a threadofscarlet.net or put my name and blogpost it should come up

    Did you do any trimming around the quilt top before you measured and pinned the border on?

    • @ToniNov25
      @ToniNov25  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. I trimmed blocks before I built the top !

  • @winkielaroo
    @winkielaroo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I readily understand the need to ease a quilt top to fit a border when the quilt top edge is longer than the measured border piece, but I've never understood the purpose of easing a longer border to fit the quilt top. What is achieved by doing this? Why not just sew the longer-than-necessary border onto the quilt top with no easing, and then trim the border to fit the quilt top?

    • @talllala
      @talllala 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm thinking its because you want the border sides/the quilt to be truly square overall as opposed to just fitting, previously I would do as you have said but I think the concept is aiming for a square overall as opposed to just a side that fits one edge, and another side fitting one edge. No idea if I'm making any sense. But I've always just sewn and trimmed and sometimes have small creases in my borders so there must be something to it all.

    I am very cramped for space, therefore, no room to lay my quilt completely flat. any suggestions. . .please!

    • @ToniNov25
      @ToniNov25  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Paulette Hessen you can lay it on dining table fold it in half and use the folded area as you center .. so that you can get measurements you need or measure center and then cut that measurement in your fabric .. you can also fold in half the fold again.. which means you have to fold your fabric to get measurements .. but in a whole measure the center of your quilt to get border measurements .. the center of quilt on the vertical and horizontal is where is the least stretch on a quilt .

    Question.
    Do you cut your border strips the length of the fabric or across the width of the fabric?

    • @ToniNov25
      @ToniNov25  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to really not pay attention to how I cut the fabric but I tested to see if me showing off the quilt would be a reasons my quilt ended up wavy and I did this video .. I cut now where the fabric isn’t stretchy I don’t remember if it on the straight grain? th-cam.com/video/7fU8VuWPhUE/w-d-xo.html

      No.. once the quilt is quilted the quilt will be stable and the quilt cannot become wavy again

    would this work for mitered corners as well?

    • @ToniNov25
      @ToniNov25  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sandee ESTES-PRICE yes .,. But what ever width your border is you have to add that space to each end-- so example your border is 3inches you add that to each end of each border side. Which each border increases by 6 if your border is 3 inches wide ... pin center then pin the end giving yourself 3 inches over hang.. then start pining the rest by different sections like video to ease in the quilt -- sew your border but come in 1/4 easing in the quilt . The your mitered section last., I hope this helps.😊

    • @ToniNov25
      @ToniNov25  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Come in 1/4 on the corner when you start sewing.. you come in on every corner of your quilt 1/4 -- it then gives you the space you need to do the mitered corner .

    • @ToniNov25
      @ToniNov25  ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be that the top stretched if you have a good longarmer it will be ok. I would measure all sides. Both vertical and both horizontal if it’s less than 2 inches difference it will be fine if it’s more you need to redo borders so you can work it in I will add a video it help

    I notice you are sewing over your pins. Not a good idea. That can create burrs on your needle and damage the interior of your machine.

      Barbara Plautz I didn't know that! Thanks for your comment! I didn't even notice the needles were still on my fabric.
