When you started talking about that really misinformed book about social cues. My blood started to boil. I suffer from autism although it’s not severe. Sure I can’t read social cues but that’s also not an excuse for anything that he brought up. I would never touch a person with out consent even hugs because I don’t know when it’s a good time to hug so I always ask. It just makes me mad that he’s using something I go through everyday as an excuse for a literal crime. I would change his thesis to how underlying beliefs or agendas can lead to a catalyst of miscommunications. For example already having racist beliefs can lead you to think that a POC is being aggressive which can lead you to make actions that are inappropriate. But even than I still think that would be down grading the issues of society.

I had read Malcom Gladwell’s book The Outliers, about the “outliers” who are successful in life ex. Bill Gates, The Beatles etc. And his explanation of why asian people are smarter is because of rice farming. He wrote out an entire section about how rice farming is so difficult and that somehow equates to intelligence. He also never mentions that these successful people are all white.

I absolutely hate the Malcolm Gladwell book. He trivializes sexual assault and I’m so glad Cindy talked about it especially in the context of power dynamics. I’m a survivor of a sexual assault where I was passed out just like the girl in the Brock turner case and it infuriates me that Gladwell is like “ oh it’s a misunderstanding”

Rewatching this video and I just realized how much I love the way Cindy talks about books she read. She offers counterpoints to her arguments and tries to figure out what the author was trying to do and idk it's just so refreshing
I just started watching you and your take on Talking to Strangers convinced me to sub! You totally articulated why I absolutely hate that book. The miscommunication angle denies so much of the reality of racism, misogyny, and power. I was a bookseller when it came out and I would eyeroll so hard every time that book sold.
The scientific studies mentioned in Talking to Strangers were interesting, the way he tried to apply it was highly problematic. The studies were interesting to analyze myself, which made me keep reading the book. But then I'd always be on the edge because of the way he was handling such sensitive subjects. Lastly, this might only be me, but I didn't see any trigger warnings on the book. So you can guess my discomfort and disgust when I was on the bus and suddenly this book was describing the rape of a child.

I appreciated your perspective on Talking to Strangers. After reading it I thought it was like the best thing ever and no one was really questioning his research or conclusions, so I appreciated listening to your thoughts about it because it just made me critically think about the text more.
I also really liked the book when I read it a while back, but I enjoyed listening to Cindy's critical perspective a lot. It's made me rethink it. I personally interpreted a lot of the book as a critique on the normalised horrible systems that enable racism/misogyny (i.e. lack of PROPER de-escalation training for police in the US, the protectionism that covers bad behaviour within the police, school-sanctioned 'boys will be boys' fraternity behaviour) and that they create ideal situations for people who do shitty, awful things to act shitty and awful. I did NOT take it as an argument for "It's actually not the perpetrator's fault" but more a case for "These systems need to stop being accepted and they need to change so that people with poor decision making skills or assholes with power trips aren't making the rest of us pay for their shortcomings." Perhaps I was projecting too many of my ideas onto the book? Maybe if I were to reread it I would find it more problematic? As a side note, I know it doesn't exonerated him from critique, but Malcolm Gladwell is a POC. I only note this because some comments have lumped him in as a white guy talking about stuff that doesn't affect him.

I just started watching you and your take on Talking to Strangers convinced me to sub! You totally articulated why I absolutely hate that book. The miscommunication angle denies so much of the reality of racism, misogyny, and power. I was a bookseller when it came out and I would eyeroll so hard every time that book sold.

The scientific studies mentioned in Talking to Strangers were interesting, the way he tried to apply it was highly problematic.
The studies were interesting to analyze myself, which made me keep reading the book. But then I'd always be on the edge because of the way he was handling such sensitive subjects.
Lastly, this might only be me, but I didn't see any trigger warnings on the book. So you can guess my discomfort and disgust when I was on the bus and suddenly this book was describing the rape of a child.
I interrupted my mental breakdown just to watch this video Priorities must be made.

I appreciated your perspective on Talking to Strangers. After reading it I thought it was like the best thing ever and no one was really questioning his research or conclusions, so I appreciated listening to your thoughts about it because it just made me critically think about the text more.

I also really liked the book when I read it a while back, but I enjoyed listening to Cindy's critical perspective a lot. It's made me rethink it.
I personally interpreted a lot of the book as a critique on the normalised horrible systems that enable racism/misogyny (i.e. lack of PROPER de-escalation training for police in the US, the protectionism that covers bad behaviour within the police, school-sanctioned 'boys will be boys' fraternity behaviour) and that they create ideal situations for people who do shitty, awful things to act shitty and awful.
I did NOT take it as an argument for "It's actually not the perpetrator's fault" but more a case for "These systems need to stop being accepted and they need to change so that people with poor decision making skills or assholes with power trips aren't making the rest of us pay for their shortcomings." Perhaps I was projecting too many of my ideas onto the book? Maybe if I were to reread it I would find it more problematic?
As a side note, I know it doesn't exonerated him from critique, but Malcolm Gladwell is a POC. I only note this because some comments have lumped him in as a white guy talking about stuff that doesn't affect him.
