Hi I love your work,, Wondering if anyone can help me. I have small chisel carving set and it came with a pice of sandpaper and stick of chalk. How do I use this to sharpen my chisels,
cool, thanks for that! One more question: where is the best place to look for affordable and appropriate wood pieces that are good for carving? My hardware store only really sells pine and I have looked for people selling privately. Are there places that you go to that have unique and varied wood types for sale?
It is not easy to find good basswood these days.... Fred gets his wood from several mills in Ontario and to be honest, it is not cheap - but good carving wood is never cheap... There sure are places which sell unique wood types but Fred carves almost exclusively from basswood, so, basswood is what we are always looking for....I do not know where you are located, your best bet is to search the internet and possibly order some from online stores.... thanks so much Hana! I had a look online and indeed basswood is not common to Australia where I am. Apparently there is nothing really like it (Jelutong has been suggested as sort of similar). I did find a couple of forums where people discuss options. I was planning on doing an introductory wood carving class here in Adelaide too, so I can ask those folks their opinion on good wood :) Thanks again
How do you get the start off wood to stick to the backboard while carving?

What type of wood is that Fred? And is it one slab or joined pieces? Thanks! Beautiful work as always! ☺️🙏🏻
Thank you!!! It is basswood. not one slab, I laminated 3 pieces together.

Where do u get wood that thick
You seem to not be good at carving, but drawing too. (That is, if you drew the picture at the beginning)
Thank you, this is Fred's design - before he started carving, he used to paint and draw - and he is very good in it.... Hana Zavadil
