- This is the Mercedes-Benz CLS 400d. Mercedes just got it right, the CLS is a stunning machine but was is a mistake to fit the CLS with a diesel engine? Under the bonnet of the CLS 400d, we have a 2.9L diesel, straight 6 that pumps 340 hp and 700 Nm of torque. Can we call the CLS 400d a proper noble machine? Well, come with me to find out!

This is the problem I have with people who are critical of the modern Euro 6 diesel engines. These engines are just great, especially the Mercs 6 cylinder diesels like the 350d and 400d. Tesla and Porsche have made great strides with electric technology but I think the market should be open and fair. Electric cars for me are still too expensive if you want the best ones anyway, and also people are not talking about the cobalt used in these electric batteries. 60% of the world's Cobalt supply comes from Congo and the labourers used to mine this are practically slaves. But governments don't care because they want to be seen as environmentally friendly and want to win elections...Great review though Anna.
I must say as a BMW owner, Mercedes really have stepped up their game, as BMW have lost it recently.
The instrument cluster has really nice graphics and a good looking layout.
Mercedes also pulls off the modern huge grille trend WAY more graceful.
And Anna, I'll bet the centre console is rigid in this one ;)
One of the best looking Mercs on sale. Will be a future classic.

Love the look of the CLS. This is a great Diesel engine. 700 nm is massive torque. It’s a quick car, drive it hard and u still get fantastic fuel economy. Perfect. Dziekuje Ci Anna. 👍👍

You cannot beat diesels for power and torque. Such a shame they are trying to get rid of them.
I have a 2015 CLS 350d but I want a petrol now. CLS 450 mk3 is my next car... once all is covid stuff disappears

Fantastic review Anna 😀 The 400d is a hell of an engine, with almost endless torque. Though I'm not a huge fan of coupes, the fuel economy is frankly amazing! For the same money as the CLS, I would opt for the GLE 400d 😀 Take care.
I've alluded to this before, but it's ironic that now that diesels are cleaner, quieter and better than ever, they are viewed in some quarters as the work of the devil.

I have nothing against diesels, big or small, but as I live in Sweden, it is impossible to buy and own one. The Swedes think diesels are poisonous and take out a yearly tax 4 times that of the equivalent petrol engine... You need to drive between 400 000 to 500 000 km a year to take in the tax cost on the fuel consumption. But please do go on testing all sorts, always a pleasure to follow your (mysterious) ways!...
swedes are very sensible in that case - we got sold diesel as the better option by successive governements in UK.

I think it's a real pity, not all diesel engines are evil. You take this one, its fuel economy is half compared to most of the 2L Volvo engines with 200 hp... oh the power of marketing and our dear beloved EU politics.

First generation CLS was the best all around. I don't think they'll make another CLS.

I've forgot to watch this review , there is no shame in having a diesel in a Merc, expecially the new inline 6.
Best diesels are inline 6 and V8 for very big displacements.
I think that the low end rpm grunt is due to the inline configuration also. There's a reason diesel trucks are mostly inline 6 ;)
You didn't say what do you think 400d vs 450 .
P.S 350d is the downtuned 400d ,you can buy it and ECU tune it to 400d and above :)

That’s because it’s the simplest solution.
Perfect balance and even firing order; scale it up or down and the same still applies. No offset journals, no balance shafts.
The reason for the existence of (say,) a V6 (despite engineering boondoggles that are required to make it smooth and even-firing) is either for the rigidity of a short/square block or because a shorter engine is desirable. A diesel engine in a truck, boat and generator rooms is too slow rotating to worry about block rigidity and no one much cares if it’s a bit long!

Had the E All Terrain for the weekend. Epic engine but ride quality wasn’t great on the 20” rims, rear passengers cramped for a big car and horrible noise from 4x4 on full lock

For me, the big mistake is the design : the CLS first and second generation was beautiful. This one is... I dont want to be rude lol. Anyway, nice review !

@@hsbcgeoff It can look bad in close up but every paint is like that on every car. It have to be macro wavy when you look very close. Otherwise if it was mirror blank you should see every micro dents in surface and pissed of every time you see it. I say that as a car painter for nineteen years.

It's one of, if not the best looking car ever.
To bad we don’t get that engine here in the U.S all we get is the 3 liter turbo straight 6 petrol engine not even a turbo v8 out of the AMG GT coupè (let’s hope later on )

Must confess: this, on paper at least, is the first diesel that risen my eyebrow in a looong time. 2.9 340 HP. wow. Well, it's not as good as Giulia QV's 2.9 Petrol 510 HP but man, that torque sounds like fun. Now if it were like a mild hybrid, where that engine would only run while the car moves at more than bumper to bumper speeds, it would be perfect. The number one reason why I dread a diesel engine is idling and slow speeds clutter sounds from under the bonnet. Can't really care any less about fuel consumption though. If it's below 17 l/100 km it's good enough for anything in my book.
Strange that it still has the old style touchpad with the wheel instead of the new version!

The diesel engine is not a mistake; if you like diesels then this is a fine one. However, the current generation CLS is not the class car its 218 and 219 predecessors are. The outside struggles to look sporty or imposing, rather it looks a little too A class.
And then to the interior. It really looks like it was designed by a seven year old and, compared to the 218 feels cramped. Built quality? That's a step backwards as well I'm afraid.
We've owned many MBs. We bought a new 219 when it came out and then the 218. The 257? Not a chance. "The best or nothing?" We'll it ain't the best and so it's nothing.

Driven diesels for 20 years but the uk government is forcing the company car driver out of them. The only solution that makes financial sense is a phev or bev. I get 55-60 mpg from my current diesel but will get 30-40 from an equivalent yet much more expensive petrol hybrid. Yet I will save a fortune in income tax. 🤷♂️
