    Getting ready to plant approx 350 bulbs of tulips, daffodils, snowflakes, Spanish bluebells, and drumstick alliums. Can't imagine trying to plant a large number of bulbs without an auger. Love watching your videos, Jenny! Your work ethic inspires me. I have a spine condition and fortunately my sweet husband helps me with the heavy gardening.

      I've done it without an auger in the past, but it's always such a chore! Hoping this year is better.

    You are so brave Jenny. I see Laura on Garden Answer using the auger but I don't trust my strength. I have about 80 bulbs to plant so I am planning on just doing some every day or so and also digging some trenches instead of individual holes for some of them since I am planning on drifts anyway. Love your channel and your videos!

    The drill and auger really make bulb planting go fast!! I tried to plant bulbs around a tree area but way to many roots. Last year I planted over two thousand so having my daughter help it went super fast.. I never knew to plants glads deep down!! Awesome video!!💕💕🌸

    I use golf tee"s as bulb markers. I place a glass marble or glass stone on top of the tee using e6000. Winter project I made up a whole bowl last winter. You can leave them outside in pots and use as needed.

    yee haw - the Power Planter auger is a game changer !!! I love mine and am hoping to add to my auger collection, for bigger pots & such. Really helps those of us with back problems and, here in the Deep South, it also helps to "grind" up our hard clay soil. I do suggest you get the handle for the drill - it'll make holding on easier. Congrats on your purchase - have fun !!!!

    I would like to see how that will grow and really not need to be stake hopefully . I have the same problem . Thanks for showing this . Great job .

      I think there are some videos later in last summer that showed them... they still flopped a LOT. They didn't get enough sun, so they were stretching. I've since removed them.

    I have the taller one so I don’t have to get on the ground or squatting down. I have to replace my drill with the one with the second handle because it will make it easier to use planting the 600 plus bulbs this fall. Last year I planted over 2000 various bulbs so it was easier just to trench them. Thanks for sharing your process.

      Thanks for the info. I'm holding out.. we'll see if this one works well for what I need this fall.

    Great video. Thanks for the information. To help save wear and tear on your wrists and arms, might I suggest a drill from DeWalt that comes with a detachable "Helper Handle". DeWalt makes a lot of different drills, and they are all good in my opinion. Since you seem to do a lot of planting, it might be worthwhile to get one of those drills. I have one, and it makes a big difference in the amount of control and safety available when "Drilling the Garden."

      Thanks. I've decided that augers are not my go-to tool... too much weight for me to move around, etc. We have so many roots and rocks that I don't think the augers work best here.

    Thanks so much. This was the most realistic demonstration of an auger that I’ve seen. I get tendinitis in my wrists and I’m afraid that this is too powerful for me so it think I’ll stay with my bulb planter. I have been so tempted though, and watching the drill spin around made me realize that for me it would just be an accident waiting to happen. Great video, keep them coming!

    • @HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden
      @HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I switched settings after it spun around, because I din't want to hurt my wrist. Rocky, clay, roots, ... all make it hard. But I'm going to keep trying in areas that are more of a good topsoil layer.

    So.... I used an auger to plant some tulips a couple of weeks ago and man oh man was my wrist and arm sore! The drill/auger dominated me! Haha. It definitely takes some practice and strength! 😀

    • @HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden
      @HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh no! My arm was a little sore the next day, but I'm hoping that I can use the tool for my other bulbs this fall.

    Using colored golf tees can also be used to identify where bulbs are planted.

    I really want the auger. I don’t have one. It’s been great to see you use it real time. Thanks a lot and great learning video. You also taught me my glads are too high as well. Lol. Tfs. 👏🏻💕👏🏻

    I just invested in a power auger to plant my tulips and alliums. Same size as yours and worked great.

  • @ThaoPham-gj8vm
    @ThaoPham-gj8vm 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can't use the auger because of the condition of my awful soil which has all kinds of rocks and tree roots. I used the drill instead to loosen the soil and to get the rocks and roots out. Gardening is hard work no matter how you look at it :)

    • @HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden
      @HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was worried mine might be too difficult too, and I'm fairly certain that the larger ones would be really difficult. You're absolutely right!

    I purchased my power planter at Lowes. It was half price so the 3 inch 12 inch long one cost just $17

    It seems like a slower up and down motion is the way to go. If you lean on the drill with your body weight, you won’t be able to release it if it kicks. I tried one and it was useless on my rocky crag in New England.

      I find that I have to get accustomed to any power tool, and the way I use it is often different from my husband, for example. The main thing is to use it safely!

    HELP!!
    I am Z8aNC. I didn’t cut my glads back, they are still green. Should o do it now???? They are very thick, should I separate?????
    Thanks for the great video.

    • @HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden
      @HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think they'll die back in frost. I've never had glads fill in thickly, so not sure about separating. I guess I'd treat them like Iris or Daffodils... if they stop flowering well, then dig them up and separate them for best flowers the next year.

    You'll love your auger. My only comment is be careful about getting dirt in your drill. My drill did not like the dirt or any dirt dampness.

  • @rphjacobs9197
    @rphjacobs9197 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Can you plant bulbs TOO deep? I heard a rule of thumb was plant the depth at 3 times the width of the bulb. But if bulbs can be planted deeper it would be great to keep squirrels away and to make them stronger! I love gladiolus but hate the flopping so if planting deeper works then I want to plant some!!!!! 😀

    • @HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden
      @HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not really sure. Someone mentioned to me about the glad bulbs going to 8", so I'm trying it. I'm not really sure though.

    Love learning from you…first time bulb planter. I have purchased some allium bulbs. Do I have to dig these up each year. Live in Zone 7b, Alabama…

      I think alliums should be ok in Zone 7b, but you'd best look at the package to be sure.

    what is that little tree being supported behind you? look for a smaller tree for some privacy. How big does it get?

    • @HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden
      @HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a 4-year old redbud tree (not sure of specific variety). Not sure how big, but I'd guess 20-25' or so.
