    My steering wheel is on the Right and our JL has a 4cyl 2.2D 450Nm/333ft-lb (the JK had a 2.8litre of similar output) and we can only wish for the stonking V6 if not for the steering box, even if it is 45kg/100lb heavier. Consider that the interweb takes your message beyond US shores where diesels in passages cars are prevalent and in Jeeps since the mid-1980s. In my area this 3.0 has been nicely propelling GCs since 2011 (also Chrysler 300, Voyager, Ram). VM Motori makes both, recently bought by FCA, and has been in many brands over decades.

    • @dsugioaga
      @dsugioaga 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I wouldn't exactly call this design first gen. It's an evolution of an existing engine. Not to mention that FCA has plenty of experience with Diesels. Both Fiat and Jeep/Chrysler who have used VM Diesels in Europe for quite some time. Also, Italian-designed is not a bad thing in this case - the Italian Diesel industry is well established and their products are in use all over the world.
      Is this particular Diesel good? I don't know but I wouldn't dismiss it more than any other new engine. Wait a few years and see...

    If I could afford it I would totally get the diesel Wrangler. I think I've been awakened to the positives of diesel engines and I kind of wish there were more options for diesel engines in domestic automakers. Perhaps Americans outside the heavy duty truck segment haven't been keen on diesels in the past, but I think if more people looked at diesels they might find they would actually prefer it. Now it's just too bad the vehicles you can get them in are so expensive and that oil companies artificially inflate the price of diesel as a "premium" fuel, even though it actually requires less refining than gasoline. That said when people figure out you can run almost any kind of oil in a diesel (with a little modification and a proper tune) maybe we'll see biodiesels take off, driving conventional diesel down.

      @@johntaylor7969 hahahahahaha Bro. Manual transmissions have been the king of torque for literally forever. The reason you can't get a manual diesel is because it's not worth them designing the interfacing if the transmission won't sell beyond a certain amount, and it plain wont sell. At this point manuals only exist in the USA for people who want the cheapest possible product or high-end sports cars, neither of which is a diesel Jeep. I absolutely hate how lazy my fellow Americans are when it comes to driving, and am legitimately depressed when I think about the death of the manual transmission in the next 10 years. I can't even find a 2014 or older manual JK for less than 85% of MSRP, never mind the 80k+ miles on those vehicles nor the fact they don't have power windows or door locks...

    I imagine 50 grand for these Jeep wranglers. All the manufacturers are building some awesome vehicles these days but it has gotten to the point that the manufacturers don't even think about what the final consumer cost of the vehicle will be when they design them and decide to go ahead and put them into production. They don't care. When and where will all this new vehicle price insanity slow way down or get to the point where no one will buy or even lease a new vehicle? I for one have bought my last new vehicle because of that "it is what it is" price attitude of all manufacturers these days. I bought a stripped to the gills 2017 Ram P/U 4x4 for 29 grand plus 3 grand for a lifetime bumper to bumper warranty so i will never have to pay more than $100 for any repair...minus the normal wear stuff of course...for as long as I own it. I figure this truck will have to last me 25 years or so by then I will be to old to drive. Won't be putting any more than 10K mi. a year on it, if that, so as long as the body doesn't rot off I might make it. You can keep your 50 grand Jeep. I paid 40 grand for my 2000 Sq. ft house brand new....

    Yes this has amazing torque, but I still think my '05 TJ Rocky Mtn will drag this thing around like every 3.6 had done to it time and again from all 4.0's that I've seen. I'll stick with my true utilitarian TJ, all these over techno rolling computers aren't for me. TJ 4.0L I6 all the way! 🇺🇸

    I know a shop that does engine swaps for jeeps and puts tdi engines in them
    About time Jeep, finally shove a diesel n there, the torque will make these amazing for fuel and fun
    Here’s my question, if I go rock climbing for a weekend or even a week, is this engine good enough to protect from low mileage driving and protect from egr and carbon soot buildup? This is still an issue with diesels today when they come from Vw-Volkswagen

    Jeep has had a diesel engine it or it is available in the Philippines since I have been here in 2012 but it is very expensive because of import taxes. I found a new one that was acspecial package for $100,000 n it was a 3 door n had a slide back soft top. A typical new one loaded w/diesel will cost $80,000 give or take 10k. I found one used and a 3 door with around 20k miles and 2016 selling for over $60,000 and has some extras added to it and they will get that price eventually. God Bless n love my 2009 4x4 Strada.

  • @wwdiesel
    @wwdiesel 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You said only rated to tow 3500, that seems awfully low. I believe that number is for a gas powered Wrangler, not a diesel. I have read online that the Gladiator with the diesel engine will have a tow rating of around 7k which make more sense. I have an 05 Jeep Liberty 2.8 VM diesel and it is rated to tow 7k and it is a smaller platform and weighs much less than the Jeep Wrangler.

    • @okanaganoverlanding2912
      @okanaganoverlanding2912 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gladiator sport with the 3.6L V6 can tow 7600. The diesel JL is still rated at 3500lb. It’s more about the spring rates, suspension as well, which has not been changed for the diesel JL

    It's a shame you were not allowed to try it in the sand at Sand Hollow. Would have been interesting to see how the heavier diesel did in the soft sand. Not everyone drives on rocks. Here in the southeast, its mud and sand, not rocks.

  • @stephenpowstinger733

    I rem in the Army I got to drive a diesel track vehicle (tank). The early gas models were a disaster for the hard work they had to do. Anyway, I don’t understand why Jeep bothered with a mere 2.0 turbo as it is not a big torque improvement over the V-6. Finally, I suppose the diesel will cost $5,000.

    I have a 19 Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 6cyl. Auto. I ordered it. I would love the Diesel BUT I'm not sure why Select Trac 4wd. is not available and that is a deal breaker for me. I love the set it and forget it 4wd. It's like driving an Audi Syncro. Works flawlessly. The 400 plus LB torque is amazing though. I've had Honda's, Toyotas, Ford, Chevy's, pickups and SUV's, but I LOVE my Wrangler JL more then anything I've ever had. Including the Kia Sorrento SXL V6 that I traded in for it and my Range Rover before that. Range Rover's, I don't care what anyone says, is the most unreliable brand and always seems to be unreliable year after year. my 8 Jeeps were ALL pretty reliable even though Consumer Reports continuously downs it. They are even better now, my 19 is perfect. Just hit 1 year and 13K miles and not so much as a single rattle.

    Do eco-diesels require less frequent maintenance (things like an oil change) than a regular diesel??

    • @guylynn8640
      @guylynn8640 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oil change intervals are about the same as a car. This particular diesel does not take the vast quantity of oil the larger ones do so the cost is not a big factor. The oil and fuel filters are fairly easy to change as well.

    • @angry-newyorker9070
      @angry-newyorker9070 4 ปีที่แล้ว
