    This version is basically a World War II propaganda short that has the villain get away with his plan and succeed in basically killing and eating the main characters, yet it still somehow manages to be less mean spirited than the 2005 CGI feature film version that Disney would also go on to create decades later!

    • @scoutart1508

  • @HDX_47

    This movie shows two main issues that still remain in our society. The first one is the lack of corroboration: most people blindly believe what certain media says, mainly because it gives them the right to have an opinion even if they don't have the knowledge to actually form one. The second issue is that those who have the knowledge and thus have an opinion tend to use it against those who don't to prove their points, making them feel stupid and inferior, usually forcing them to fire back with whatever stupid argument that might look plausible. In the end, if the "smart" tried to understand why the "stupid" feels that way, he would be able to teach him what he knows, and then the "stupid" would be able to form an opinion of his own

    • @maiar2239
      @maiar2239 2 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      Yes, I think you nailed it but for me there is a third issue: the debunking of the figures who are currently telling the logical truth (the farm leader, Cocky Locky the rooster). Foxy Loxy cast doubt on his ability and intentions (basically tarnished his image). This part relates to the second issue; it's thanks to Chicken Little's hurt feelings for Cocky Locky laughing at his stupidity that Foxy Loxy is able to manipulate him a second time without question.
      Overall, Foxy Locky goes undercover and attacks the self-esteems and pride of all animal groups to get his way.
      I think that, due to the historical context and the purpose of the short, the fact that the ruler is the *only one* capable of thinking on his own among so many makes sense; putting that aside, I think the message/warning is clear and perhaps more revealing now with the Internet, the fact that information is a couple of clicks away also has its downside (the dirty partisan manipulation of the media, on the other hand, it exists since their invention).

    • @HDX_47
      @HDX_47 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@maiar2239 I think I get your point. In a sense, Foxy Locky is a representation of the press and it's ability to manipulate suggestible minds. And yes, given the purpose of the short it is important to have a leader that is diminished due to misinformation. But that is precisely what shows how leadership, which relies on respect, can easily be overturned. Even if people admires someone, that's only based on their image of said person, and that image can be easily distorted. In the end, we want someone to do everything for us, but at the same time we wanna judge how that is done so that we can complain if it's not done our way

    • @DonPeyote420
      @DonPeyote420 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      problem is, the stupid won't listen to the smart one under any circumstances because he's been told by propaganda not to.

      @levnzt6949 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      "he would be able to teach him what he knows,"
      IF they want to be taught. Some just prefer the feeling of "being right" which protects the own beliefs against correction, because that would emotionally hurt.
      See also "cognitive distortion" (Beck)

    • @HDX_47
      @HDX_47 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@levnzt6949 but see, the term "correction" is what causes that situation. Correcting someone means that you have the right or "correct" knowledge and they don't, ergo putting you on a superior position. And, of course, not everyone bears the idea of having someone above them. That's why I don't think you have to correct someone, just give them the knowledge, and then let them choose what seems more logical to them. It's a dangerous approach, but it's the only way an idea can penetrate into someone's mind. Some people just like to feel like they don't need help (or teaching, in this case)

    You know, it just hit me. Foxy Loxy here has the distinction of being one of, if not the only, Disney villain to succeed in thier goal without any caveats like anti-heroism or dues-ex-machina style return to the status quo. And considering the context and history of his short, that just makes it all the more unsettling.

    I love how this cartoon in the first half is like every other predator/prey cartoon, with the predator even being the victim of slapstick. Then in the second half, it's an entirely different type of cartoon. This was always one of my favorite cartoons as a kid many years ago for two reasons, first one is that I liked how the fox actually won since we don't often see the predator win in these, and secondly it shows us why as tempting as it is, we shouldn't root for the fox or the wolf to win in these cartoons. As an adult I like it even more now that I get the references.

      That's funny, it shows me why there should be way more cartoons where the predator wins! 😁 It's very satisfying to see (though of course, the deadly serious wartime analogy it's being used for in this case does make it rather grim and less funny).

  • @Ubritoons96

    Honestly looking back on this short as an adult, the disturbing part isn’t even when Foxy manages to eat everyone, but the fact that his manipulation works ALL the way through without anyone truly stopping him! Yeah, Cocky Locky was that one block in the road, but once the rumors started worrying everyone with that mere second attempt, THAT’S when shit went down!
    Even as a wartime parable as Leonard said in the special opening disclaimer, this old cartoon is still a good/scary message for today’s even crueler world with how unfortunately easily some innocent people can get manipulated in real life by WAY nastier scum who will try to harm you.
    Take this cartoon’s advise: Don’t ALWAYS listen to the crowd and think independently as much as you can. Especially if you think something (like possible, or even intentional misinformation) doesn’t feel or sound right. Be careful out there in the real world y’all. It can be a really cruel place regardless of how kind and helpful you honestly try to be.

    I saw it when I was 12 (1976) on a 16mm projector at a community center. Of course at that age, the Nazi reference went over my head. I recall being started and caught off guard by the ending where the bad fox won, but not traumatized. I thought it was offbeat in a kind of Mad Magazine way. So glad I was able to find this again! I haven't seen it in years. It used to be included on Netflix with a whole collection of other Disney shorts, like the Three Little Pigs and Lambert the Sheepish Lion. The collection was one of my favorite things to watch when I was younger! Sadly, we know as the tale ends as Netflix no longer has these. And while I'm happy they mostly remain on Disney+, Chicken Little is not on there. It's sad to me, though now I know why it probably isn't!
    I had no clue back then that this was a WWII short meant to be against Nazism. A lot of the social parallels depicted definitely flew over my head as a kid, though without the preview or a little Internet research to try and find it again, I might've still not understood the anti-Nazi context! This adds yet another wonderful interesting layer to the cartoon, and I enjoy the history it holds.
    Back when I first watched this, I was intrigued to see Disney's spin on the classic tale of Chicken Little. I was very pleasantly surprised at the end when Foxy Loxy attained his goal! It was such an unusual twist and I loved it for that. I was also very into wolves and other wild canines at the time, so that's probably why it intrigued me too.
    It'd be cool if Disney put it on Disney+, adding the historical context. Unfortunately it probably won't happen.
    If the channel owner happens to see this, thanks for uploading this!

    Fun fact: the original issue had the "Psychology" book be "Mein Kampf" but was changed in post war reissues to be more "apolitical"

    • @PinClockFuntime
      @PinClockFuntime 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      There are various sources stating contrasting things, but a film version with Mien Kampf and its original script never left the studio. You only see Mein Kampf and mentions of it in storyboards.

    • @tanagerffolkes5180
      @tanagerffolkes5180 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      The Studio didn't change "Mein Kampf" to "Psychology", or change "Fascist" to "Totalitarian", to make it "apolitical".
      They changed it, so it would not seem "dated", and thus, be more likely to keep earning.

    i remember this from when i was a kid (80s), think i remember it because we only consumed maybe 5% of the media that kids (and everyone) do today. there was a lot more personal responsibility involved in the consumption of media as a whole- and people were worried about the degeneration of common sense and the critical eye then. meh, it'll probably be fine.
