This was taken inside of Joyce Green Hospital right by the Dartford crossing, was closed and in-between the closure and all knock down this was made. My wife worked there - originally it was a war hospital, then was a spill over from West Hill hospital. It had horses roaming too and that used to frighten the staff and they waited in their cars. the Hospital moved into a small hospital at Darenth Valley the other side of the M25 (Also known as Death Valley hospital!).

    It'll make you smile
    All human life is here
From the feeble old dear to the screaming child
From the student who knows that to have one of those
    Would be suicide
    To the family man
Manhandling the pram with paternal pride
    And everybody sings, "Ba-ba-ba-da"
We're going where the air is free
On the National Express there's a jolly hostess
    Selling crisps and tea
She'll provide you with drinks and theatrical winks
    For a sky-high fee
Mini-skirts were in style when she danced down the aisle
Back in '63 (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
But it's hard to get by when your arse is the size
    Of a small country
    And everybody sings, "Ba-ba-ba-da"
We're going where the air is free
    Tomorrow belongs to me
When you're sad and feeling blue
    With nothing better to do
Don't just sit there feeling stressed
Take a trip on the National Express

The eclectic brilliance of 1990s Britpop stems from the intellectual freedom of its songwriters, whose imaginations were fertile enough that they could take inspiration from anything and everything. I'll bet my eyebrows that we never hear some X Factory wannabe singing about National Express coaches, hiding inside a female friend's big sister's wardrobe or being caught by the fuzz while still on a buzz.

Pretty much changed my life and opened me to the world of The Divine Comedy... been a fan ever since. :)

I've been in hospital for the past 10 days and they've played a weird selection of music on hospital radio - including this. I couldn't wait to get out and find out more about it. The video is even better. I've travelled on a lot of NX buses (cheaper than the train) and I've seen these people at first hand. I was on a bus many years ago when a young couple got on in Birmingham at almost midnight. The driver wasn't going to let them on because they looked to be out of their skulls and kicked up a stink when he objected to them but they had valid tickets so he had to. Later, I saw them heading towards the toilets at the back with small bags of powder.

Absolutely fantastic live band.

What a delight to "discover" a singer/songwriter you've never once heard of before, who has a couple decades of great stuff waiting to be explored...! The sheen wore off somewhat in my mid-20s when they put me on the direct coach to Glasgow instead of the one that stopped at Preston. I woke up somewhere near Carlisle and despite pleading, the driver would not let me off, so that was my first visit to Scotland lol

I consider this to be part of the golden age of music! around the mid 1990's, 1996, 97 and 98. Divine Comedy, Space etc. They were dam good groups. This chap even more so as I understand, if it is true he was on the dole and wrote the whole album hiding away from the world. I just think hes brilliant! the icing on the cake is around this time he also did the music for Father Ted.
