Gustav Mahler's famous orchestral composition "Urlicht" (Eng. "Primal Light") was used as fourth movement in his Symphony No 2 "Resurrection". Mahler used it again also in "Des Knaben Wunderhorn", however with some major alterations, like in a different key.
I hope you will enjoy this breathtaking music in my instrumentation for four double basses. It is in D flat major, just like in the symphony. Credits and compliments to my talented students from Hochschule Luzern from the generation 2020 for their wonderful performance of this beautiful, but very difficult and tricky piece to perform in this formation.
Eternal beauty of this composition was supported by fantastic instruments: three of four double basses used for this recording have been made by Derek High, one of the finest contemporary double bass makers.
Recorded in September 2020 in "Salquin", big concert hall of the brand new building of the HSLU-Musik (live performance of this piece was part of the opening celebration of the new building).

I must admit that I have never really loved the formation of the double bass quartet, but in this case I am truly amazed. The arrangement is beautiful and it seems written especially for this line-up. The execution is perfect and the sound beautiful. Thanks for making me change my mind!

@@doublebassPaulBadiini yes, and we also use proper choice of instruments: super bright one with higher tuning for the highest voice and very dark, warm and resonant instrument, particulary in the lower end for the lowest voice

Well, this was so beautiful it made me cry. I have long loved this 4th movement from Mahler's second symphony and sang the alto part in college. Now I am learning to play the double bass, and it makes me happy beyond words that you have arranged this for bass quartet. Bravo, you made the world more beautiful with this. ❤️

I really don't know much classical music but I typed in double bass to TH-cam for my 17 month old daughter to see how she responds .. and she has been carrying my phone around and setting it down to listen.

@@srfgrn thanks 🥰 no idea. I never had any problems. Those who sit tend to have problems with the back much more often. And especially those who don't make any sports (independant of playing double bass)

As this year I am going to perform this piece with my double bass quartet, I would like to ask you about tuning.
We do not have the possibility to use High C, we just have AEBF# and GDAE.
What tuning would you use in each voice?

Hello 🤗 first voice works also with AEBF#, but it is quite high. In another video here on TH-cam (quintet vetsion) my student Filipe Dandalo does it that way impressively well. Otherwise for all other voices I would use GDAE
