I have been reading a lot of the comments.... Thanks! I want to tell you I'm not complaining, just making an observation from my perspective. There have been 800 comments in ten hours (I'm still working my way through them). I do like the split time USA/Philippine idea many have suggested. I'll probably have to save for a couple years to make that work. I'm trying to get Christin and Dale's paperwork in order for travel to USA if necessary. That is definitely in process.

I retired at 40 I was told I would be bored rigid, I used to run a fast-paced business, it took me 2 years to get out of the western work mentality where its all stress pressure keeping up with the Joneses, once I was over that mindset I found the simple things in life were so much better, more time with family, pottering in the garden growing my own food, cooking, etc... remember once dale starts walking you will not be bored believe me bro, plus you are starting to breed pigs, why not breed more to sell, start a wee business over there TIMS TROTTERS best pork in town! Honestly you are living the dream there out of the rat race , how humans were meant to live unlike in the west where its all about material things, we are only on this earth for a short period, just enjoy it my friend. on the exercise front look behind you , go for daily swims , do press-ups squats etc , again lazy westerners use machines not their bodies , all you need to keep fit is arms and legs just like in ye olden days!

Food for thought.... I'm 46 and I want to live there permanently. I like how the focus is on family and just the next meal in the Philippines. Things are less complicated.

Tim I totally understand. I lived and worked there in sin city (yes as military) for more than a year. I was not a drinker nor did I like the clubs. It was a lonely time for me. Don’t get me wrong I really enjoyed the people. It was hard to motivate myself. I was in the medical field and started a free clinic. It turned my life around and gave me purpose. Now it is your turn to find that purpose of yours. Try to think up ideas for your little area. Set a goal. Anything. A business, building your new home, how about a small rec center. Concrete with a roof a couple pool tables, maybe a wet bar and of course karaoke. 😂. You will figure it out. I know you will. Praying for you and your family.

This is purely my own thoughts on your situation over there fella. Firstly you chose to marry a beautiful young lady and live in the Philippine's and now you have added a beautiful young son to your family, your sole thought should not be on yourself but your family and how you can best provide a healthy future for them. The province where you live is like blank canvas just waiting for someone like yourself to develop a business where your family and the whole community will benefit in some way, the options are endless if you have the right frame of mind and heart.

I’ve been living in Anda Bohol for this past year with my wife and two daughters , I really haven’t experienced what your saying , you can be relaxed and laid back as you want or you can be as busy as you like . We built 3 beach style villas that’s kept is very busy , we were even more busy renting them on Airbnb , if we’re not busy with that we are working on the rice fields in the mountains , I guess my point is you can be as lazy as you like but there’s also plenty of opportunity as well . Good luck with all your endeavors Tim .

Tim, I had a friend that married a Filipina and he stayed in the Philippines after marriage. Having worked with his hands all his life, he enjoyed it as a hobby but like you, he soon found himself in the trap you discussed. he accidentally found that word of his hobby of hand carved bowls for his In-Laws had spread after they show some to others that liked them and began asking if he would make sets of bowls for them. He did it gladly because it was what he enjoyed doing. To make a long story short, his gifts of bowls for his In-Laws turned into a business that found him shipping his bowls to England, the US and other countries. He became so successful carving bowls that he eventually began branding the bottom of his bowls with the brand that stated, " Hand Carved in the Philippines". He did that until his death. His hobby expanded from free bowls for family to bowls selling for as much as $900.00US and never did he produce more than 3 or 4 bowls a week.
Find a hobby. Find something you enjoy doing and go for it. Even if someone else is already doing it, make yours different because yours are better. Write a book about your life in the Philippines. Write about the love of your life and raising a son mixed in two cultures. I guess what I'm saying in a nut shell is set a goal of accomplishing something you enjoy doing. Make it your Mission, define the parameters of the mission, define and executable time table of the time you will devote to it each day or week and then execute the plan. Above all, remember one thing. In the Philippines, family comes first. Make sure the only thing that can pull you away from your hobby (Mission) is your wife, son or wife's family. I would wish you good luck, but that's not what you need. What you will need is your wife standing there behind you supporting you and ready to put her foot in your butt anytime SHE thinks you are about to waiver from your task.

Realize that it doesn't have to damage your personality, but add a new facet to it. One problem we Americans have is not being able to slow down.
My mom worked hard, finally started to slow down and enjoy the fruits of her years of labor, then got cancer and died. Don't wait until you're dead to smell the roses because you cant smell them from inside a casket.

Plant many fruit trees like the locals do, get some land, listen to locals. Hussle to make it work, it will keep you busy and productive.
The trees grow as your kid grows. Energy from the sun, to food, to money.

Hello, this not works, Tim cannot get land because a foreigner. Many foreigners going bancrupt drying to go in business in the Philippines. My advice to Tim is, hold open the door in US because there is not future, no for you no for you children. You can stay there only like holliday but not in business. The wil ripped you of any thing. Beginning from the permitts to selling
his fruits or meat or anything. I known people who was in the coconuts business, lost all, people raising pigs - lost all, paying a brand new jeepny and lost also. No way to make some business by your own. Last i think his beautiful innocent whife not has the balls to running business.

It is very true. Although I haven't spent a year there, I've gone for 2,3,6 month trips. The more time you spend there, the more you think of how less you might need to be happy. Back in the western world, you are always thinking of next job, next big purchase, next level for anything.

"Tim's Gym and Heath Clubs" Western style gym with personal trainers, free weights, machines, spin bike classes, aerobics etc. Locate it near the dive resorts to attract tourists. Monthly memberships for locals. Chrissy can work making smoothies and selling her dads coconut milk. Hanna can sell memberships. Sell franchises in Cebu, Manila and south east Asia.

Hannah's advice of "go with the flow" is the best advice that you'll get. You're not in the US, you're in the Philippines and you won't change it, but it will change you. What I do in the Philippines is to change my priorities, it's no longer about "getting ahead"... it's using my time and energy to try to understand what's going on there and fit in and make the best of it. That's a full-time job and hard work - use your ingenuity and drive to do that ! ;)

Very true about life in PI. I lived there for 4 years, 4 years on Guam and 4 years in Hawaii. PI and Guam are pretty close in life style.
I was like you, but I really wanted to slow down after Vietnam and all the fear I had. The slow pace of life let's you enjoy the moment, the time with your family and being away from the hustle and bustle of life here in USA. Maybe you need some friends or best friend to share time with. I am 75 and envy you in your life. After this virus is gone, life will return to some what normal but everyone has to be able to see the big picture of life. Slow is really good. Sit on the beach, soak up the clean air and vistas. Enjoy watching your family and especially your beautiful son grow. Life is great, soak it up.😊😎🤩

So true. Don't get caught up in a western mindset of achievement and production. I though it was funny when Tim said, "...we're put on this earth to make use of everything around us". We are? Who says so? Why do you suppose most westerners think that way? Well, as with most things in life it's social and religious programming stemming back hundreds, if not thousands of years. And that particular mindset can be traced back to religious dogma within the protestant and puritan religions. Remember those founding families from a few hundred years ago in the east coast of 'Merica? The idea being that the best, perhaps only way to get in 'God's good book" (ie: a free pass into heaven) was to work your ass off. If you're not working, then you must be sinning. That's why so many people with a protestant upbringing feel guilty when they're not working. Sad thing is, you don't have to be protestant or even religious anymore - that programming is so deeply ingrained now in societal group think in the west. Crazy how your brain get programmed like that - just like a PC with MS Office. Sure the American industrial complex has created some amazing things that have made life much better, but they also created the atom bomb and the disposable product society. Limitless growth in a finite planet - now that's crazy. If more of us had the 'province' mindset we might not be in this climate change, global pollution mess. Learn to relax my friend and enjoy!!

A few years ago when I found that my living situation left me alone, a friend gave me some advice. I didn't understand it then, but I do now. And, it applies to you I think as well. She said that "I had to learn to like myself so that I could live with myself." It has made a difference in my outlook on life.

  • @ntsuabchannel
    @ntsuabchannel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Tim, I totally get it. I came from SE-Asia where life was (and still is) simple and relax. Coming to the US was (and still is) a cultural shock. I learn new things every day, even after 35+ years of settling here in the US. I have seen the good and bad of being in a culture that you are not accustomed to growing up. Those that made it generally bridge the positive sides of each world and live by them; those that usually fail or blame on others are the ones who picked on the bad ones from both worlds.
If anything at all, I would suggest that you just need to be yourself, and do things that the mainstream do - in your case, how the Philippino does. I know - being two different personalities in one place can be a challenge, but you need to walk this fine line, to make a difference in yourself, your family, and the community in which you live - at least, this is what I found contributing the most strengths to my motivation and at the same time helping those whom I am surrounded with.

Firstly we have a situation now you need to let pass before you make any hard decisions. I am in the US and done with the life and so want to me more or less in your shoes, but then we are all different and doing things alone or keeping sort of busy with myself is not a problem for me because I'm already doing it. I'm not motivated by a job/career I try to enjoy my wife and my hobbies the work is just a vehicle to allow you to live and enjoy what you can in life. Many people fall in that I'm bored and nothing to do trap in just retirement alone without living in another country.
Find your hobby or hobbies besides the Vlog, take up sailing (my new thing) you can get a boat later if you really want your in the perfect place, learn, take lessons, gain some experience, get some sea legs be a Capt. Exercise as mentioned but it's a marathon not a sprint, get a trainer later, walk...walk a lot, change it up at times, you will see it melt away. Your a traveler/explorer and a decent people person so your being hampered by the current situation and a new family, just change it up a bit for now you can do it all! you have the time there's no rush, you left the rat race behind. Cheers!

I hear you. My daughter always said that I am a 'Project' person. I always put my mind on something and I drive everybody hard till it's finished and then I look for the next project. Find yourself a project within your field of interest (it can be at home) and work on it Example: What about designing and building a jungle playground for your son, soon, he will be big enough to enjoy it. It's a long project, but it gives you time to design and build an interesting playground. And of course, it's your specialty, you will derive a lot of pleasure from it. With time, you will look back and be proud of your creativity and variety of objects that forms part of a theme in your own backyard.

Yeah i was thinking that, start a little shop selling groceries or whatever, Tim has lived there long enough now to find a nice little gap in the market there so sell whats most needed, He would surely have enough help running the shop what with Chrissy's family/friends etc then if that goes well maybe purchase some plots of land to build rental cottages or appartments which in turn would be more custom for the shop, if that doesn't keep Tim's mind occupied then i dont know what else will!!

Tim.dont make your situation complicated dont confuse yourself with uncertain thoughts.dont get tangled up with wrong ideas.work on your own peace of mind.learn to know about the inner you.Your in a good position, in a province that's idyllic, relaxing.lovely scenery.clean fresh air. Most of all you have the time to reflect and look inwardly and exam the real you.to move foreward and elevate yourself onto a new dimension of wellbeing.move away from negative thoughts mixed feelings.dont waste energy on these sort of useless emotions. Be realistic know who you are so you can be what you are consistently.dont throw doubt or uncertainty into the mix, that only stirs up unhealthy thoughts which is not conducive to your wellbeing.Remember you are where you are because that's the choices you made. But if you didnt think it through carefully enough, only you will know that, however that doesn't mean to say you made a mistake,it just means you have to give it more thought( it's not to late)and make adjustment and adaptations to your present situation.Right now many guys would give there right hand to be were your at right now.I have a filipina girlfriend with a 2yr old daughter.we are based in Cavite. Its not for me but, not much choice under the present circumstances. This coronavirus and the lockdowns that's in affect is putting a hold on everyone's life.one final word, you are what you are if you know who you are.You are more likely to keep your sanity and peace of mind were you are now than in the hectic overcrowded polluted noisy cities. You and your family will all benefit in the long term.

Mr. Tim. I know you are having a Lil melancholic moment, missing Our country, is normal, I've been here in Manila for almost 4 years, perhaps I miss My country, the food, my family, friends and all the activities I used to do. When I came here I left a brand new car, but a friend He got tired of taking care of it, that He told me that the car is his, so, I told him OK fine, I haven't done my income tax return from 2017, I gonna come back, for sure, I like Philippines, but, I'm still young, I need to go back to work and let's see what happens later. Good luck with your life, don't give up man, just think positive, you have a baby and just focus on your wife and baby. Bye bye.

Tim, I am surprised to hear your statements. Your thought process is dead on correct! Live and learn, grow and prosper! You are doing exactly that, but in an area, the Philippines, that may require more pondering, and reflection than if you were in CA. You've experienced new things many of us don't have to worry about or take into consideration. We have no idea what leading a sedentary life is all about, except we older folk of course. lol You can choose a happy medium (I think this is where you are now) which will probably net you a decent life here on TH-cam, or you could go balls to walls, and possibly get the success I think you are after, much quicker. Don't forget to include Chrissy, and your in-laws in your decision process as they will either want to support you, or will go against you depending upon how you relate the situation to them. If you spring something on them without having included them in your thought process along the way, they are likely to balk! You have at least a few months (with the problems we are all facing) to think where you want to take this, and what your options are. Good luck to you in any case, and stay safe!

But it gets better and I have people check on me and I check on them but I hope you’re holding up OK this other video that you just put out talking about how chill it is there it is a beautiful place to live.Which I know you know that but it’s more like a place for Americans to go for vacation to live there is a big culture change I hope you can get through this rough spot I guess that you’re going through with the changes and I hope we can get better for you. Number two is don’t be afraid to start doing something to do. An idea you have in mind to make things better for you and your family. Number three is do not stop. Keep pushing yourself. hate to tell you the cure costs money, but it is somewhat relative to the nature of the experience there (especially in the province) - create a set of mini businesses - "don't expect anything from them" (this mentality there is very important) - the expectation for a Kano/Joe should be more hobby like, so don't dump more than is comfortable into it - you can always strive to make profits but be ok with 'sustainability' (which is hard enough in that culture) - nothing big to attract attention from local taxing ...organizations, government, etc... but strive to make your family sustainable while providing you more resources
...examples... one or two trikes for hire, she'll have cousins that can operate them (they always have lots of 'cousins', lol)... purchase one of the the small fishing boats (not a dive boat), and again she'll have family or 'cousins' that will effectively use them - sari-sari/sundry, but you'll need a small building/pantry easily secured - keeping in mind that several aspects of this concept will keep you busy but can make life there much easier for yourself and family "if done correctly" - and more in keeping with your current interests, small scale home style 'baboyang walang amoy' or oderless pigpens (do a Utube search for ideas) ...keep it small and "always" focus on 'odorless processes' - same can be done with chickens for meat and egg production
(very important to "diversify" the portfolio like any other investment in life, and you'll figure out over time what works and doesn't within your family group)
you have to 'teach' your family about the concepts of responsible re-investment and maintenance as the culture there is not to maintain but that all daily revenue is simply profit for 'use now' ...they won't want to restock the sundry pantry, shelves will go bare, and they'll look back to you for capitol to restock, lol ...no maintenance will be preformed on the trikes until they break down, then they won't have the money to fix ('you' have to skim/rake the table and create a fund 'with that' to schedule and preform maintenance), but in the meantime you'll (and your family) have another transportation resource available that pays for itself over time ...you rake a take from the fishing boat, small amount of peso's for another maintenance schedule and the rest in fish for your family (more built in stainable resources for the family) - there are places in the Phil's there you can send family members for training regarding 'organic farming' and odorless piggery processes (do send 'family', not just yourself - as they'll need to 'understand' elements of the process during times you may be traveling)
understand up front, they will steal from you (they won't call it that, lol) through short changing you of profits and goods, they'll short your rake (you'll learn the politics of that over time) - that becomes your mental challenge there, keeps you busy, the sustainability of your portfolio of family micro businesses - teach your wife the expectations of the model to profit and then be satisfied with sustainability, lol - she handles any negative interaction between members of the family and you simply learn to support her (it keeps the peace, lol)
    - never put 'so much' into it financially or mentally that you couldn't one day walk away without regret, and "understand that up front" -
just a few idea's to ponder, lol
just ask if you have questions
    good luck

Really don't see how your 'danger' is dangerous. It's about quality of life, money and career may help with that, but if I look at myself and look at the world, beyond a certain point money is no longer important. If you can live a decent life that's enough. Just look at the US, sure economically they do well, but it struggles with massive obesity and mental health issues. The stress of an achievers culture and looking at things through an economical lens is at least part of the cause.

I understand how you feel and think knowing where you’re coming from. Just be grateful for now that you’re in Leyte when CoVid19 became a pandemic. We’re in one of the state right now under quarantine and wishing we are in your place like Leyte. We’re not doing anything in our homes except watch TV, read, cook, eat, exercise, shop for food once every three weeks, no work, being fearful of getting the virus and being stressed about it. We’ve been stuck in our homes for more than three weeks now. Maybe when this pandemic is over we can all be more creative again. Right now, we are so envious of you. You have the beach and sea in front of you. CoVid 19 hasn’t touched Leyte. We are so close to New York and we might be the next state to experience the worst. God forbid. You’re more blessed. Be thankful that you and your family are shielded from all these. You don’t want to be where we are at this time. Stay fit, stay healthy for baby Dale and Crissy, be safe and most of all be thankful.

I would say your a personable guy you could easy setup tours around the island and find those unique and different places off the beaten track in Leyte. I am still in Vancouver BC Canada working but I go back twice per year. Your only limited by the constraints you place upon yourself. Do it, move it, make it happen anywhere anytime. Lots of opportunity, create, imagine, nothing ever comes easy, but being busy and productive can be extremely rewarding. If you want more ideas message me. All the best WC

Hi Tim I'm not sure where you are in the Phils.I have spent roughly 2 and a half years there, over the course of 20 yrs,so I have a bit of experience.I would refrain from opening a business,as most Filipinos would see this as competition, and do everything to subvert your efforts,so be very careful.I always thought I would retire there and start a business with my Filipina wife, but after reading about all the robberies/murders of foreign business owners, it's probably not a good idea.I think finding a hobby, exercising, hiking, reading, possibly boat building if you are good with your hands .Meditation might be good to calm your mind.Maybe there is something you could teach to the local kids? They are always so eager to be around westerners.Good luck !
