At 97 years old and beaten up by the impact of time aging her body, why would she want to go on? All she can do is reflect on her life until she goes because she is certain she will die soon. I doubt she would think that way if she were biologically 35 and chronologically 97.

Thank very much for your warning. I have seen a lot of documentaries about products for healthy life but I couldn’t count on it at all, because I knew it was fake products. These factories will only earn money on it.
I know rather than using techniques that we know work on cells in positive ways and works on hormones like yoga and meditation, why not study those and then use those findings.
The reason chromosomes have telomeres which shorten is to prevent the prolongation of old cells which have acquired DNA damage and hence are at risk of developing tumours. Preventing this process may inhibit ageing but will promote the development of cancer cells.
@infinitejest. While that is true, the shortening of telomeres is only one of many defenses against damaged cells. It is a last ditch defense. For cells to ge to the point where a telomere is the executioner, many other processes must have already failed. Also, there are many processes inside cells to fix damage to DNA. While it is true that we will not live forever (there are so many external causes of death and biological damage), it is possible to extend the part of life where we are in much better health, so that we might have a good biological life for 80 years instead of 50. Of course, most of the "anti-aging" market is snake oil. lol
not true, sperm cells maintain telomere length through telomerase and don't become cancerous. That's why your children, that come from your older cells, are born younger than you are. There are also animals that maintain telomere length and are negligibly senescent, like Lobsters and Alligators for example.
I like the whole idea of staying young (young soul). Just because you are getting old doesn't mean you have to give up taking of yourself or your appearance leading to a more fulfilling life. But getting older or growing older has always good things too. So taking a good care of yourself + life experience = amazing person.

AWResistance You fear it so much that you are too paralyzed to even try and do something about it. They are way more courageous than you and most of the society who prefers to embrace the pro-aging trance instead of fighting it.
I prepare for death almost every day by worshipping my Creator. There isn't anything to be done except accepting our inevitable demise. It's where we spend eternity that really matters. Don't get too comfortable in this mortal realm.
AWResistance Well since you're religious you could look at combating ageing from a charitable point of view. Ageing brings lots of suffering to the ones that have it, and that usually gets worst and worst the more it advances. Old people have to go trough decades of suffering till they one day die due to the advanced decaying of the body.
I don't see aging as a disease, and with a society as we have, such traitement will cost millions and be available just for the bourgeoise, separating more and more the poor from the rich. It will just be identical to the Love, Death and Robots series/tv show.
My grandfather was basically a shell of the man he once was after my grandmother died. He died at 86 of leukemia and honestly I don't think he would've wanted to keep living. That woman was his world.
She is so right, to risk her own life and make this sacrifice is a very small price if it can mean the end of so much suffering and death for so many, especially if she feels her thinking is sound and the results significant enough to warrant this risk. Good for you Liz for doing this for the potential benefit of so many, I commend you!
It is accumulated damage that causes ageing. We can intervene to end ageing and the suffering it causes. Senescent cells and mitochondria cause a lot of damage. We will see therapies emerge, over the next twenty years, targeting the diseases of ageing. Longer lifespans will be a side effect of this intervention.
With genetic engineering you can improve upon the cell's ability to repair its DNA, fix it telomeres, and make tissue that is resist the spread of cancer cells. Such work has been done in mice, and has lead to mice that live 2x longer than normal and are highly resistant to cancer.
I can see why people are afraid of 'living forever', especially when it is involuntary. I don't think anybody is suggesting that we subject all humans to a kind of compulsory treatment that extends our lives indefinitely. Instead, the idea is to develop a treatment to prevent, slow, or reverse ageing, when and if a person wants to. You can choose to die at 100 if you want to, some may want to live longer, some may not. I see the real problem here as 'choice'. Sooner or later, human technology will stumble upon the fountain of youth but this will make people conflicted because now they are forced to decide on the most fundamental and arguably the biggest decision of their existence. Our lives were given to us by our parents, but now we have to decide if we want to take it away. Imagine hating your mother for dying because she didn't 'choose' to live longer. Or, imagine your children hating you for living longer because they won't get your inheritance. In the past, we could blame death on ageing which takes individual choices out of the equation, but in the future, this may change. Personally, I think people should be given a choice to extend their lives or die a natural death. I don't like the notion of 'not thinking about something' just because it is too hard. That's silly, and that's just avoiding reality. These are questions that everybody needs to think about and reflect on because it is what truly gives meaning to our lives. "What am I living for?" "Why do I do this?" "Who will miss me when/if I'm gone?" "Was I such a terrible person that nobody will miss me when I'm gone?" If you think these questions are too hard and therefore you don't want to think about it, then you can choose to let ageing take you. But for those who need more time on this Earth to figure out the mysteries of life, they can choose to extend their lives.
I fully support the mission to get aging under medical control. I want my family, myself, and anyone else who wants it to be free from horrible age related diseases, disabilities and ill health which include: Alzhiemer's disease, other forms of dementia, loss of bone, muscle and lung function as well as weakened immune system. I look forward to a future where people have the ability to decide whether they will grow old and die from it, or stay youlthful.
Age is just a number, and it depends on what we think about ourselves. Age is what you make it, if you think that you are old you already old if you think you are young, congratulation, you are young at heart.
I mean I started by 'Nah" so I doubt I agreed I have a midlife crisis. On the other hand staying healthy and away from cancer and Alzheimers seems really nice, since I have personal experience of these diseases in my family. Also, the thought of death kinda scares me since im not religious or believe in any unproven shit like that, so I don't think I would call that midlife crisis but a general avertion towards sickness and death sounds more like it.
ildisiri I am not religious either, but I don't call it "shit" just because I don't believe in it. If you are actually 23, like you say you are, I would expect you to have at least a little bit of decency.
Yeah I completely agree with @Gold. We got out of mature nature's grasp a long time ago. We no longer live as a part of ecosystem. We created our own. Natural overpopulation rebalancing happens only in the wilderness. Now, if we manage to not destroy ourselves, we can safely live forever. And colonizing other planets will take care of overpopulation. Or we take care of it other way. After all, we are intelligent species.

I think the secret to longevity is simply based on what you eat the levels of stress and toxicity that you are exposed to. Everything in your body regenerates. It only depends on whether or not you give it the appropriate conditions to regenerate properly. The idea of living longer by simply taking a pill will have other consequences in my opinion proper sleep and exercise is very important as well

I think aging is somehow beautiful up to some point where you start to develop problems because of that, but aging shows experience, emotions, it shows part of who you are and how has life shaped you some might even have the luck to age and look better than when they were young, more sophisticated even. What is the real beauty in looking 20 all your life besides the outside, if what you have inside is all rotten? Age can bring also sometimes respect from the youngsters, it is something that should not be looked at as horrible, stopping the process at some point may be beneficial for the health but the appearance is not to be considered the whole purpose.
There has been so much pain and tragedy with our human race for centuries that I would not want to live long enough to witness more pain, cruelty, and destruction done by humanity.

@dominique hall diabetes type 1 is caused by the failure of pancreatic cells which are what produces the body’s insulin. This is a genetic disease in which the death process of these cells is rapidly sped up, meaning that by investigating the genetic process of aging and cell death she could have a reasonable chance of using stem-cell science combined with telomere lengthening treatments to construct a new pancreas for her son with genetically identical cells. This would mean that her son could have an organ transplant which would not be rejected by his body, but this time the cells would have a much longer lifespan and function normally. But this is purely theoretical. :)
Extending human life even more can have horrible consequences for this planet. This is specially true if the biggest consumers on the planet extend their lives and the accompanying foot print.
28:55 The drug in question is Metformin. It's a diabetes drug derived from lavender. Metformin does have side effects. Rash, swelling, and itchiness. Metformin does have some benefits to slow down aging, but the variance on that benefit could vary from person to person. For some people, Metformin can have a long term benefit, while for others, the benefit is very short term and the side effects can be unbearable. The current availability of Metformin is a generic. As many are aware, the quality of generic drugs are highly variable. Yes, they may be effective, but in the USA, the effectiveness is guaranteed to be 80%. Yes, 80% effectiveness on generic versions. That may explain the variance of the drug on its benefits. In addition, the dosage of Metformin for healthy people is a low dose like 250mg. Unfortunately, the market does not sell Metformin in 250mg dosage. The lowest dose is 500mg. It's up to the patient to use a pill cutter which is not the best way to make sure the dosage is 250mg as pill cutters are not made to be precise. Until there is a brand Metformin 250mg or lower dose, it will be a wait for the masses to try. Even if the benefits were short lived, that brief moment of time to enjoy life for some people may be worth it. Metformin may not extend the lifespan for all, but if there could be some benefits, why not have a low dose Metformin brand quality made available? Like low dose aspirin. There should be warnings on any drug or supplement. For some people, once that therapy is stopped, everything gained could be lost and the speed of that lost depends on the person. Like minoxidil to treat hair loss. Once stopped, the hair gained would be lost again and even more would be lost. It's like a dam holding up the river. Once the dam is broken, then the water will flow out bursting! In other words, if it works, one may not be able to stop; otherwise, run the risk of everything crashing down.
No, I'm not. The doctors I have visited have long criticized metformin. There is no brand available for metformin. Only generic. If anyone were to try it, the quality of the drug is only 80% and the side effects are at 100%. Like Minoxidil, once a person stops the medication, who knows what would happen. It takes 20 years to study long term effects.
What are a few of the many side effects of metformin? “Metabolic disturbances such as hyperglycemia and hypercholesterolemia, which predisposes to pancreatitis. Valproic acid may have direct toxic effect on the pancreas.[18] There are various oral hypoglycemic agents that contributes to pancreatitis including metformin. But, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is more strongly associated with pancreatitis by promoting inflammation.[19]” en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pancreatitis
Don't have high expectations. Once stopped the benefits may be lost very quickly. Like in a day or two. Or even within hours. Side effects depends on the individual. Side effects include but not limited to random swellings like the lip area. There are many side effects. Is the small gain worth the side effects? And there is a new drug to treat Alzheimer's from Biogen. It's very expensive and must start early. Once Alzheimer's go past the mild stage the drug is less effective. I believe the Biogen drug is an injection.

I really don't understand why such opposition to life extension? We should all try to be healthy for as long as possible. Unless it is the religion that prevents people to accept scientific possibilities, one should strive to support the science in aging. But if it is religious belief in life after death that keeps someone going, fine. Everyone should choose and not judge the other.
I think it is very unlikely that we will get far with life extension technology in the current generation's lifetime. But it is possible that the grandchildren of someone born today will be the last generation to die. Having said that, I find the opposition to the prospect of life extension absolutely absurd and people have such strong views of it. The truth is, if you have the option to live for a few hundred years, you can always end it early if you want to. People talk as though you're being forced to live that long. It's like people want to not only die, but get to old and weak and die in a nursing home with dementia.

The reason chromosomes have telomeres which shorten is to prevent the prolongation of old cells which have acquired DNA damage and hence are at risk of developing tumours. Preventing this process may inhibit ageing but will promote the development of cancer cells.
infinitejest, sad but true.

"What am I living for?"
"Why do I do this?"
"Who will miss me when/if I'm gone?"
"Was I such a terrible person that nobody will miss me when I'm gone?"
If you think these questions are too hard and therefore you don't want to think about it, then you can choose to let ageing take you. But for those who need more time on this Earth to figure out the mysteries of life, they can choose to extend their lives.
This.
Exactly...well said my dear
Nice , wish more people thought like u

We don't have to worry about that, that's within our control, not mother natures.

Watched people running around lol, getting wet. And listened to the sound of the rain, which I love.
I had a great day and all I did was go grocery shopping and stop for a coffee when I was tired, until I felt re-energised. A perfect day.
Pay attention to what is RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU. A colour, a bird, a person, a dress in a shop window you like, a snail on the sidewalk that will get stepped on if you don't pick it up by the shell, gently, and put it under a bush.
Someone out there needs you. Everyone can be needed even if it's just a bug to rescue from being stepped on or drowned in the rain.
You could do it all to Mozart lol or you can listen to Led Zeppelin, it doesn't matter, as long as you enjoy it.
@@dreamst8259 I agree . I enjoy life. I'm just saying it would be somewhat humorous if there was something awaiting us on the other side a million times better with none of the pain or trials and tribulations of this world but people were trying to extend their stay here. Lol.
@@STONESGAM we will meet the creator of this beautiful world that we have fallen in love with but us humans have corrupted it. We shall be accounted for it.
Forget that! You want to be a slave to the beast system longer? I'm outta here, when the time comes.

Incredible !! Thanks a lot for this documentary 😍😍
What I want is heaven...Everything, everybody in perfection...Music, dance, food, and fun beyond our limitations. I want to see my pets run free in paradise~Imagine~
Me too.
You don’t know for sure. Haven’t been there yet , haven’t you ?
Iam looking forward to see my loved ones in heaven. They just went ahead of me
If you believe in one God and associate no partners with Him, Call unto Him alone in you’re trying times, then surely God is the most kind!
Turn to Jesus and you will spend eternity with Him in paradise.
Sick to watch the elderly desperately cling to a few more years, not preparing for good ending of their life.
love way she just explains it on a glass window...thought we had whiteboards in this day of age lol
Shes being creative do you know what that is
I'm not a smartass but i guess we are not created to live eternally they may just extend the human's age but soon it's over ,so appreciate your life the way it is
Probably because we were not created in first place, and we are product of blind process of evolution. What we are and how long we live is because of millions of years of natural selection. I think that blind process is not the best thing to write our future for us.
+MankindDiary " probably" we can only speculate and this issue is way bigger than what we think ,also I highly doubt the so called natural selection because such high precision and greatness in universe simply can't emerge out of that, and if you want to create a big impact first know where you and what to do we are lacking both in here
Wonder how this helps her sons diabetes tho???
'Her son's diabetes' is the pretense for her search for what boils down to eternal life by circumventing God. Good luck with that...
@Dontworrybhappe Oh you...
Keto
And intermittent fasting
UR THE FIRST TO CRITISE IT
No, I'm not.
But, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is more strongly associated with pancreatitis by promoting inflammation.[19]”

@@michaellee888 so you are saying it's not good for human habitat
Don't have high expectations. Once stopped the benefits may be lost very quickly. Like in a day or two. Or even within hours. Side effects depends on the individual. Side effects include but not limited to random swellings like the lip area. There are many side effects. Is the small gain worth the side effects? And there is a new drug to treat Alzheimer's from Biogen. It's very expensive and must start early. Once Alzheimer's go past the mild stage the drug is less effective. I believe the Biogen drug is an injection.
Of course all the quacks were in California. I love my home state, but sometimes it makes me cringe.
aruytpadyugf lol more like quacks in San Francisco it also is my home city but the shit that all the rich side of sf invests their money into is absolutely disgusting
really appreciable! Great work. Nothing is impossible if we do keep on trying.
Well here we hit human limitation
I am 45, and I've lived a full on beautiful life so far, I take every day as Bonus now if I look nice, feel good and stay healthy. Satisfaction is the best version of peace and happiness to me. Nah, not interested in stressing so hard just to look younger! But yes I would like to find a way to die as healthy as possible. 🙊 I hate suffering and feel terrible when especially children suffer before even living a life. 🧡
are you married
If we dont die it doesnt give us drive and ambition and appreciation...the nature of death is more important then u think...
Every one want to be imortal .
Live longer by being graceful and eating clean.
Aging is a part life .
It is part of life untill we remove it.
2LegHumanist how old are you? I mean increasing lifespan will come in about 20 or 30 years ... but it'll give you some 10 to 20 extra years and maybe science discover how to reverse aging completely
James Alexander Rocha Robleto
I am 41. I've looked into this fairly deeply. I don't think there is anyone alive today who will live beyond 130.
2LegHumanist well i can't deny that. But there are many scientist involve in this subject ... dr sinclair (NAD+ Project) Google's and Paypal's CEO(Nanobots, which probably this or next year might be using as a cancer therapy, which will help our inmune systems finish the job by helping reconstruct damage cells in our entire body and DNA) and the last one is about initiative 2045 ... the transhumanism. So what do you think about that?
Agreed, Angie. I have never understood why aging and death seem so well loved.
why do most of recent news of BBC not have subtitles? CNN is much quicker but I find news in BBC more interesting :((( I hope the management can upgrade this application please.
What did she use in the iv drip? Was it NAD?
Imagine this!!!! we won’t have knee pain at 25 anymore 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Uhhh... You have knee pain at age 25?
I do not care about living more years. 75 is good enough for me, may be 78. But I'd like not to have eyesight problems, prostate problems, Hernia, erection problems, and so on.
Exactly, I hope science can help us live 75-80 healthy years on average. Everything beyond that is nice but not as urgent as having most people live the bulk of their life healthy. I already have some eyesight and back problems and i'm 28 so i'm afraid how bad things will get in my later life. I'm really hoping to reach 70 in relatively good health.
Right.
Yea a pervert needs to see and get a boner

90-100 or however long God Almighty wants me here.
Terrifying this video, I feel strange after watching this, even I would say frightened about the future.
That creepy music in the background didn't help matters any!
I wouldn't worry about it... Each year tons of new unknown disease cause chemicals enter our environment. Not to mention new viruses. Watching climate change science documentaries is much more frightening. Sometimes things seem to be getting worse as the years go on and one must ask themselves, why live longer? The quality of items, foods, human interaction, natures wonders of the world is all going downhill and getting worse each year.

Even if they do find a way of arresting the aging process, it will only be the very wealthy and priveledged that will be able to afford it.

That's false it would make much more sense economically ,to release the therapy to the public.....
so mamy strange people in this movie
Do you have a follow-up docu on this, @BBC News?

Hello
Imagine the increase in population and the food shortages. Everything grows old for a reason. That is why we even have expire dates. People will become mentally unstable if keeps living for long years. Most people in this video will grow old. This life is temporary. The real life waits after death. And death is just a transition from this dimension to the one we came from.
