Thanks for the info. Been watching and like the table/jig. Today I made one for myself. I'm trying to do N Scale buildings. Just gotta do it..... Thanks for all the tips. The small details.
What to you are a few different grit sandpapers that are good for working with styrene? Do you use the same grits for hobby type woods? If different what are those grit sandpapers? If you plan on answering this in a future video tell me and I'll wait for the video. I think, as I've told you; that you are definitely a master modeler and I'm going to pick your brain a little bit if you don't mind. I'm not new to scratch building, kit building or modeling in general but I'm not seasoned yet either. I don't think I'll every be to a point that I won't ask someone else's opinion on a subject that could help me learn a new easier way to do something though. Especially if it makes my models look better. Thanks again. Stay well. -Wil 👍
You are welcome. I appreciate your question. Any sand paper will do for styrene plastic. Do bear in mind that plastic does create dust if you sand too much O.K.
Try getting your hands on some medical blades. I happen to use those intended for veterinary use and they are awesome. Flexible, the point never breaks and VERY sharp. It seems modelling blades are made of lesser quality steel. Dental probes and spatulas are also great. Ask your dentist people. At worst they'll say no, at best you have a quality tool. Sharpened they can be used as scribers, too.
@@boomerdiorama I believe the used ones are classified as bio hazard and you won't get them. Docs and veterinarians however often get new "trial" ones for free. Those shouldn't be a problem. Here in Slovenia I also get syringes (PVA applicators) and needles (micro tubes) for free as they're available to addicts. You just take a few from the pharmacy. No questions asked or eyebrows raised. And BTW: no need to be addicted to heroin.
@@williambryant5946 They are regular surgical scalpel blades. Can be used with a regular handle or their intended one (which prevents the blade from accidentally sliding out).
hi great videos as usual! its ok with me if they are longer ! the ' pick ' you were talking about is a dental tool called a ' hollenbeck ' they come in i think three sizes, 0 - 3, yours is a size no. 1 pretty sure
I've seen the "pick" type tools at flea markets.. fairly good prices too. After watching this video I also googled the center find ruler.. there are a number of outlets for them.. $12 and up seem to be the going price.
They are nice to have. Someone mentioned all one has to do is trace a line corner to corner to find center. This is true, but then try that with just a random narrow linear piece and the former method won`t work so well . . . Cheers.
Question: Do you have an opinion on Weld On 3? I have been using WO3 after watching Adam Savage do scratch styrene models and that was his recommendation. I have not used the Plastruct plastic weld yet, but will need to buy a new bottle of something soon, as my WO3 is running low. I'm trying to decide if I should make a change. Thanks in advance.
I have not but it sounds good. Most of it is solvent based like MEK, etc. Not technically an adhesive. Solvent is a chemical weld for polystyrene plastics, ABS, PVC, etc. and when applied well is bullet proof. If you don't need much then a bottle or two of Plastruct won't hurt. I use it because it works and the smaller bottles are convenient for my smaller bench. 😁
a good modelling scalpel is a bard parker no. 25 handle and replaceable blades. i find it easier to hold than a xacto 11. the bp blades come in stainless and carbon steel. the carbons stay sharp longer but are more brittle. they are like a number 11 but upside down, ie sharpened on the flat not the slant
You were going to give info on these tools? The drill bits is what I need. I have the forever braking bits.
Sorry about that Vincent. The drill bits are called Godhand. You can get them here: godhandusa.com/product-category/drill-bit-set/
@@boomerdiorama Good prices too.
First time I've heard of a Center Finding Rule. Thanks for sharing the tools of the trade.
Try and acquire one if you can as a modeler. You won`t lend it it out either . . . Lol.
Thanks for sharing.
Cheers!
Absolutely love scratch building. From steel mill heavy equipment to mill buildings. Super fun to take on a new HO challenge. Subscribed.
Thank You for the sub! Nice to have you join us.

I'm trying to do N Scale buildings.
Just gotta do it.....
Thanks for all the tips. The small details.
If I was younger I would try this in N Scale as well. ;-) Cheers ~ Boomer.

This is good advice. I will remember to ask my doctor next time for one of his used scalpels now that you mention it. Cheers.

Are they like a regular scalpel or something different because I can buy regular surgical scalpels and replacement blades at my local hobby shop.

@@rafaelvoncina6036 Nothing like a sharp blade to work with for sure.

I probably don`t know any better. Best not change now . . . Lol.
Thanks the the inspiration
Cheers!
Found dental picks at Harbor Freight in a 5 pack.
Awesome! Dental picks are a modelers best friend. ;-)
😊
Cheers Randy!
I love tools! Thank Boomer!
