    In this video, we will discuss the topic of Iron Kinetics and Laboratory Assessment. We will delve into the essential metabolic processes in which iron participates, as well as the regulation of body iron through excretion and absorption. We will also explore the different compartments in which body iron is distributed, including the relative amounts in each site.
    We will trace a molecule of iron from its absorption through the enterocyte, to its transport into the mitochondria, and finally its recycling via macrophages. Along the way, we will provide the names of all proteins that interact with and control the kinetics of iron.
    We will explain how hepcidin regulates body iron levels and how individual cells absorb and regulate the amount of iron they take in. We will also describe the role of key proteins such as Divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1), Ferroportin, Transferrin (Tf), Transferrin receptor (TfR), and Hepcidin in the kinetics of iron. We will distinguish between the proteins that are involved in the regulation of iron within individual cells versus those that are involved in systemic body iron regulation.
    We will also recognize the names of proteins involved in hepatocyte iron sensing and the regulation of hepcidin production. Additionally, we will list the factors that increase and decrease the bioavailability of iron, as well as name foods that are high in iron, both heme-containing and ionic.
    Finally, we will discuss various laboratory assays used to assess iron kinetics. These include Total serum iron (SI), Total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), Percent transferrin saturation, Serum ferritin, Soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), Measures of the hemoglobin content of reticulocytes, Prussian blue staining of tissues and cells, and Zinc protoporphyrin (ZPP). We will also show how to calculate the percent transferrin saturation when given total serum iron and TIBC.
