As mentioned in the video, this week I am restoring a part from the E30 that I have already restored. So I purchased this brake booster and master cylinder to show the process. This particular master cylinder would need serious internal work or replacing altogether. I purchased an internal seal kit but when I got in there, the second half of the assembly was well and truly stuck. So, I just got on with the aesthetic of it as I'm not actually using this on my E30. I will show the process of replacing the seals in my actual brake master cylinder in a future video.
Firstly I disassembled the booster and master cylinder. I then degreased everything before plugging any holes with Polydoh. Once sealed, I blasted them both to remove any paint and rust. With the pieces now mostly clean of rust and paint, I set about removing the rest with a rotary tool and wire wheel. I also filed a few nicks in the metal down. before etching priming and then high-build priming. I then sanded back the primer ready for base coat and lacquer. Whilst they dried, I cleaned the other small pieces with concentrated degreaser and elbow grease and trimmed the rubber hose's protection fabric.
Once they had dried it was time to reassemble. I purchased some new rubbers, o rings, and some air filter material. I placed the air filter in the gap and began added parts to the booster. Once assembled the restoration was complete.
    Thanks for watching!

I don't get this restoration in the first place. Dedication is there, but I don't understand why. You've spent so much time, and some money on materials, to cosmetically restore this brake booster, but you haven't replaced any of the internal parts that are likely to fail. A new unit is $300 and will be reliable. This unit may now look nice and shiny but may fail down the road. And boosters do fail, I can tell you from experience.
Actually, I just looked it up. A new Ate unit for a Porsche (probably the same for BMW) is $201 USD. It makes no sense economically or from a safety perspective to cosmetically restore an old booster instead of just buying a new one.

@@GarthGoldberg I was thinking the same thing. Like I get he likes to restore shit but it's kind of a waste of time. Who knows how long it will last. The diaphragms inside of those things are made out of rubber and with the outside of it looking that bad I can't imagine what the inside of it looked like

remove the circlip on the back of the master cylinder then blow some compressed air through one hole with caution while covering the other holes with your fingers...the piston will slide out, be carefull, and then you can easily replace the rubber seals and inspect the bore inside...if it is pitted then trash it...try it... here the replacement rubber seals are very cheap. you can clean anything brake related with alcohol only and for assembly wet it with brake fluid...brake fluid is hygroscopic so when storing calipers and master cylinders if you dont seal all the holes, air with moisture will get in and it will rust out on the inside very quicly, it can seize up in a matter of months.....
edit: ok i just read the description now...sorry

Just out of curiosity, since the stuff said "reusable" couldn't you have soaked it in hot water again to remove it from the parts? Seems like it would be easier to remove when it's soft and pliable rather than all the digging and cutting you had to do while it was still molded.

Another wonderful video...very therapeutic. I also really like the sounds (no music) in your videos. I read the description and know that you won't be using this booster/master cylinder but I would recommend that if you do, add a glob of good grease to the end of the pushrod prior to mounting the master cylinder on the booster...this will reduce wear but more noticeably, reduce the possibility of squeaking or creaking when pressing the brake pedal (ask me how I know...). I really like the paint/lacquer...seems to yield good results for projects like this. I live in the US so I'm not sure if I can get it here. I will have to look to see. Thanks again!

Just a little tip degreasers sometimes tend to leave a film behind so you may want to wash out the reservoir with very hot water and dry it out with compressed air. Brake fluid tends to not like other things mixed with it.

That paint job did come out super.
Can I suggest that you make yourself a "tool" for your videos?
Get a suitable sized cardboard box with lid, and a simple, cheap
hair drier. Cut one hole for dryer, duct tape it into box, not pointed at
the parts area. . Cut another slit for a vent.
Only handle freshly painted parts with new nitrile gloves.
Place your parts in drying box, dryer on HI for one hour.
Let cool 30 minutes before handling
The paint will be much more durable and harder when hot air dried.

Not bad. This isn’t a full restoration as the master cylinder didn’t get pulled apart. There’s seals that could have been replaced.

Since the car takes DOT 4, Would you consider using the new DOT 5.1 Since it is fully compatible with DOT 3 and 4 and has a higher boiling point then even DOT 4

there are two different things...if you ask a company to do such restaurations, nobody will do it, because too expensive and it makes no sense...but, if you do it by yourself and you are able to do it, perfect and you save money, as long as you dont count the hours...but who is counting hourse for a hobby? great work!!!

Why do you add crystal hardener to you solvent deep black paint iv checked the manufacture and it is not a direct gloss. It’s just binder and pigment normal solvent paint just need to add paint thinner 2:1 ??? Plus that hardener was designed for the clear coat

  • @aldeacristian4582
    @aldeacristian4582 2 ปีที่แล้ว

You should skip the basecoat and topcoat and just use a good quality 2k paint, like from Standox, Glasurit, Valspar/Debeer.

Restoring old worn out parts may seem ludicrous when spare parts can be readily purchased but working to rebuild parts helps gain an understanding of process of manufacture and also allows practice of new skills. Also you're not possibly inheriting some else's mess, if you stuff up it's on you.

With all that effort, I would have honed and rebuilt the Master cylinder and at least tested the Vacuum power diaphragm. I understand why you didn't, but a master cylinder rebuild kit is cheap insurance and then you'd have a spare.

It would have been neat if you took the diaphragm of the booster apart, but I’m kinda glad you didn’t

So many ads! Four and then a paid promotion. I don't mind ads but keep it to a minimum, I have ad block and don't use it on selected channels. Nice way to alienate your viewers. You have good content but it's pretty terrible.

your work was good but your knowledge of what you were working on was not . The master cylinder had a rear seal leak this allows brake fluid to drain into the power boaster thus compromising the integrity of the diaphragm in side the power boaster unless fixed the whole project is useless.

  •  6 ปีที่แล้ว

i tought you had mounted the master cylinder upside down cause the vacum rose was on the right side but then you talked at the end of the video and i realized you're from the uk (or australia, i can't tell) and the break booster is on the left side of the engine lol
anyway great video, you're a inspiration for me and my friends!

Next time you should try get that reservoir completely clean. And replace that hose outer layer, just rip old outer layer off and replace it with nylon, it should look pretty fine with that.

  • @mezo6453
    @mezo6453 5 ปีที่แล้ว

You make the parts look like new on the outside, however, that’s not how you rebuild / restore a master cylinder and a booster. Functionality is more important than just looks

  • @matel1s

If you have access to ultrasonic cleaner bath, put the fluid reservoir into it. You will be surprised by the result - it removes the yellowish color, so the tank will look like new.
