  • Lyrics:
Lord, you know that I've been bad
So, there's no use in lying to myself
    Heavenly Father, please forgive me
I really don't want to destroy myself
Oh, when I come to the end of my journey
Weary of life; the battle is won
Carry my staff; the cross of redemption
We'll understand it better by and by
Lord, sometimes I feel like Samson
You know, the world has so many Delilahs
Almighty God, give me just a little more time
To right all the wrong that I have done
Oh, when I come to the end of my journey
Weary of life; the battle is won
Carry my staff; the cross of redemption
And we'll understand it better by and by
We'll understand it better by and by and by
We'll understand it better by and by
We'll understand it better by and by and by and by
We'll understand it better by and by
Oh, when I come to the end of my journey
Weary of life; the battle is won
Carry my staff; the cross of redemption
We'll understand it better by and by

My late husband and I watched this movie over and over . One day, he spoke up and said “I want this song played at my funeral”. Ten years later, I honored his request. Fifteen years later, I can’t hear that song without thinking of him and his request.

Me and my husband felt the same way about this song. When he died in March I put this on the play list and the funeral home forgot to include it. He also wanted 'Green, green grass of home' played, the funeral home played it but it was so low you couldn't even hear it.

When I was a kid, I watched Cadence and for some reason would cry listening to this song. Fast forward 30 years, my father passed away and my mother, unbeknownst to us, selected this song to play as we proceeded out of his funeral service. I was so upset and glad at the same time. Now, whenever I hear it, I think of my dad. I miss him so much.

Now at almost 37 and one who struggles deeply from depression, I want to thank Harry Stewart so much for this beautiful song that God truly put here for us all. Helped me more times then I can count and still does. I always said I wanted this song played at my funeral. Thank you Lord and Thank you Harry

It was never recorded except for the movie soundtrack and like so many people who get involved in the movie business Harry Stewart came and went with little to no notice....which is really a shame because he really has a powerful voice......I imagine that the words of this song might have hit close to home for him and he knew that getting involved in the industry he might have had to compromise something that he held in high regard....his faith and his self respect.

I was at work singing and one of my coworkers emailed me asking if I had ever saw this movie (this was in late 2017). I replied “no” and immediately he sent me a TH-cam link to this song to listen to. Needless to say, I haven’t stopped listening to it and I’m proud to say as of today June 18th 2018 at the age of 37 (thanks to my fire stick) I have joined the millions who have seen this movie. This song touches my heart from the soul for so many reasons. So much passion was put into these lyrics

There are those who don't believe in God and say he doesn't exist. For them that's their reality. But for me they don't know my journey in my life. Tomorrow January 20th I will be on this earth for 57 years. I have seen various seasons and each one made me a stronger and wiser person only because my faith, my choice to follow Jesus Christ got me where I am today. So this song speaks truth, that each of us have our own journey and when we come to the end where are we going to be? For me, I put my trust in my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Funny little story if you care to read... Back in I think 88-89 I was able to watch Harry play this song in person a few times, as well as get the back story of how he ended up in the movie Cadence. There was a unit (R-1) at Reading Hospital where my mother was staying due to issues with panic attacks and mental health problems. It also happened to be the same unit they put people who were recovering addicts. Harry apparently had some issues he was dealing with.
Now some of the patients were seriously ill and the entire unit was kept in containment with posted security guards and locked doors. There were some patients who believed things like they were island princesses who were being held captive by the doctors, and various other untrue stories. This comes into play later in my story.
Anyway, there was a recreational room there that had various things for patients to do like a pool table, air hockey, and a piano. Harry would play gospel songs to the other patients to keep his and their moods up. Besides his singing and playing ability, Harry was a completely average guy.
So when him being so unassuming, when he would tell doctors and nurses about this movie he was in with Charlie and Martin Sheen, they thought he was another "island princess" person who got wasted a few too many times on whatever drugs he was using. He'd tell them, "I'll have my wife bring up the pictures." They'd laugh and entertain his little "delusion". Until of course, the pictures showed up one day. Then the mood changed. Now Harry was a movie star in their ward. I'm sure the level of care changed for him after that. And I bet they had their own stories once the movie came out a year or two later. I specifically remember looking at the pictures. It was a tan folder full of a bunch of black & white 8x10s. I was 8 or 9 years old, and couldn't care less. I had no idea who those people were besides Harry. I just thought it was cool he could play the piano.
I remember his room was right next to my mom's. My family would bring some food from home for my mom to eat, but she wouldn't have an appetite half the time. So Harry would notice that we had some home cooked meals and mention how good they smelled, so she ended up giving them to him. She told us and then the next few times, we made a plate specifically for him because he was so nice.
He also told us the story of how he ended up in the movie (getting arrested with Martin Sheen at some protests) we never know if it was true, but I have to assume it's true because this article states the same. variety.com/1991/more/news/success-hasn-t-come-easy-for-green-card-composer-99126066/

We had a choir member of the Beacon of Hope Chapel Choir, who went to the hospital to get his tonsils out. He never woke up and died at the age of 25. We sang this at his funeral

This song refreshes my mind and heart.
If I had to think of a movie my father and I like to watch together, it's Cadence. He sings this song to himself while we watch it even though he doesn't like singing in front of people.
He showed it to me when I was in the jrotc in high school because he thought I'd like it. It's one of my favorite movies. We've watched it together many times afterward. As I grow older, I start to dread that day in the future where I'll be watching it alone. Hopefully that day is far away.
As many have said, I want this song played at my funeral.

Thank you for the lyrics. I grew up loving the movie cadence. The song "was" my favorite but just a little bit too "man-centered" now that I truly understand the gospel. If an unbeliever listened to this song, he/she wouldn't know who was saving him/her and who the Almighty God was.

This is the greatest song I have ever heard- I think the main reason I love it so much is because of the person singing it. I feel his soul in the keys being played and the lyrics. Thank you Harry. Keep up the good fight my brother.

Let me just say there have been many Songs that have reflect the love of God in Christ but this Song speaks to the Soul at the End of its journey what a magnificent peace of work by mr Harry Stewart . God bless Him . I play this song at least 10 times a year since the movie Cadence came out and I am grateful for the Heart o the Song. it is refreshing and always brings me to my knees in tears back to myself. in praise back to our Heavenly Father. who do not get much credit. through this Son He does. thank You Heavenly Father for Jesus Your blessed Son. Amen.

I had a dream when I was younger. In the dream it was night time, and my beloved wife had left me and my children had all abandoned me. I was alone in the dark without anyone beside me anymore. I walked over to a streetlight and this song was playing as if in a soundtrack. In my dream, I fell to my knees in supplication to God.
    Begging Him for relief,
    respite... release
...from the terrible punishment and burden I was afflicted with.
I miss her. Terribly. I miss them all... terribly. I should have listened to the dream and been a better man. 😞
There is no fix now. No coming back. Now, I will suffer... endlessly.
