    What a fun video! One opinion from me: if a pattern has search tags on Ravelry which say female, male, unisex, but the designer doesn't show it on female and male models, i think it's just lazy spamming to get their pattern seen by lots of people. Same with "size inclusive" designs. It should be modelled on various body shapes & sizes to allow knitters to make a more informed choice whether it will suit them. Of course, people can wear whatever they like. But attaching search terms without giving examples is annoying.

      It blows my mind that it even needs to be clarified, honestly. People who have other hobbies are rarely called “selfish” for enjoying their hobbies for themselves. Avid readers aren’t “selfish” for not writing extensive reviews, swimmers are not considered “selfish” for not giving away free swim lessons, yet we as a creative lot are somehow termed “selfish” for not wanting to give away the fruits of our labor? Pshhh. So dumb!

      We don't have that term in Finnish and I'm shocked that there even is such term in English. What an awful term. :( Anyway knitting is knitting, no matter for whom you knit.

      I agree completely! My job is fulltime caring for others. I knit to relax and re center my mind and refill my “bucket” I don’t mind knitting for other people but I find most people have no idea what it means to be given a hand knitted gift and its a bit soulcrushing for me to put that kind of time and money on a gift that is put away and never seen again. So generally i knit things I know i will enjoy and use

      Is it called selfish because it is predominantly a woman’s craft, this is subversive sexism, for example a man and his hobby trains would never be subjected to this label, the world of sexism tells us that women should be about doing things for others, so when we don’t guilt sets in, this is definitely not part of a man’s thinking ( generalising here)

    This was a brilliant video Laura! My unpopular knitting opinion is “there are too many designs with excessive positive ease”. I much prefer a neater fitting garment and often have to adapt designs to achieve the look I like. Fine if you know how to do it but frustrating if you don’t!

    Thanks for a fun video!! :)
    My unpopular knitting opinions:
    - we don't need 12894 more patterns for oversized plain raglans, yet they keep coming out for some reason??!!
    - mesh lace is ugly
    - expensive knitting tools are usually overrated (with the exception of chiagoo interchangeables imho :D)

    Faithful gauge swatcher over here! I totally agree with all you said about swatching. I would add no one should say "you have to gauge swatch" but I also feel like no one should complain that their sweater does not fit or they ran out of yarn if they didn't swatch. :) I loved this video of knit and chat!!! so fun to listen and knit to!

    So much fun to hear everyone's preferences. How lucky are we to have so many options within our craft to allow us to knit to personal preference?! Even with a pattern there are so many opportunities to personalize a project to insure that it suits the knitter. I love seeing what other people knit as it gives me so many ideas for my own knitting. We do get to make our own rules in a way.

    This was such a fun episode. I hope you do it again in the future. I totally agree with you about the bucket hat. I really don't think they are at all attractive. That being said, I am firmly team DPN. I suspect it's because that is how I learned and I am more comfortable with them than with magic loop which I find rather fiddley. Congrats on the Souffle, it is beautiful! 🙂

    So I have one, too: I think that dropped shoulders look horrible. Also I think it's sad that knitting in the round is so popular, because garments with set in sleeves do hold up way better, for they have more structure.

    Berrocco's wool/acrylic blend is one of my favorite yarns ever. I really didn't want to love it, but it works up so beautifully and it's so sturdy, if you have to frog something and reuse the yarn it just gets better and looks amazing. I don't understand it, but it's incredible.

    I really enjoyed this podcast edition, it was interesting, entertaining and very tactful to the opinions and personal preferences of other Knitters. In my opinion (being primarily a garment knitted), there is a bit too much patterns featuring stranding a yarn with mohair. I do like using mohair, it makes a more luxurious finish on the garment, evens out stitch definition in stokinette and protects from major pilling issues. However I am finding I am not a big fan of wearing mohair sweaters at home, just bc fluff gets in a way or they are too warm. I find it hard to find yarns that would be next to skin soft and make even stitch definition in stockinette, and that are DK or thinner, which are my favourite types of yarns. I had a good chuckle about shawls, I find them fiddly and not practical as well. And I am very picky about colourwork sweaters designs, preferring a more modern and simple patterns, and again with the colourwork, sweaters can get bulky very easily. Cheers from Alberta Canada

    What a fun Knit & Chat! One of my unpopular knitting opinions is that I love mattress stitch! I do love knitting in the round, because it is quicker, but I think that sewing seams, especially in mattress stitch, is kind of magical. I like watching the piece come together as though it had always been that way! I have never mastered DPN's, but I do find those little sticks handy for adding pockets to sweaters!

    I've been knitting for over 50 years and learnt the "old-fashioned" way using dpns for socks and working flat pieces for garments then seaming. I have switched to magic loop for socks but still prefer flat knitting for sweaters and cardigans. Steeking scares me witless. I like colour-work yokes and, sorry, (not sorry) I just cannot justify the cost of hand-dyed yarn or pure wool. I'm working through my stash this year and it's pre-dominantly acrylic. I'm definitely an english knitter and enjoy the process with no desire to switch to continental. BUT as you said "each to their own". I wouldn't dream of criticising anyone's method or preferences. The world would be a boring place if we were all the same.

    That was a fun video! I love acrylic and cotton because of their affordability, because I do a lot of amigurumi, and because, sadly, the lanolin in wool makes my hands break out in a nasty rash. I am a continental knitter who also can knit English but I definitely prefer continental and find purling continental is much easier for me than purling English. Haha. As you have stated; too each her own. I have tried all styles of knitting (Portuguese, Norwegian, flicking, combination and traditional English and continental.) The key is to find what works best for your hands and use it without worrying about how anyone else knits! You’re so much fun to watch and your podcasts are some of my favorites.

    The soufflé is definitely on my to-knit list, love the design!
    My unpopular knitting opinion is that I don't mind purling at all. I knit and purl at the same speed and they require the same effort (I knit English style though). I once purled a full men's size XL sweater and did not mind at all.

    I'm knitting on a little easter bunny for my daughter and this was perfect to watch! As for knitting flat: I also think it comes with practice and just being used to it. I used to be a big cardigan person (still am, but have discovered the joys of a sweater) and all of my first garments were cardigans. The purling was never an issue to me. But now that I've made more sweaters I've gotten lazy and can't be bothered to knit flat anymore 😂

    Totally love this! Some other unpopular opinions - I have no issue knitting sleeves (I don’t ‘get’ sleeve island!), and I have no issue purling and don’t get why people hate it so much. I also really dislike the term selfish knitting - it’s usually used as a self-identifier in my experience, and then they tell me I’m ‘good’ because I knit for other people as well as myself which makes me feel pretty awkward. I just knit what I feel like and it happens to quite often for other people, I’m being just as selfish as anyone else!! Ie not at all, everyone just knit whatever you want 😁

    It was really fun to see your take on these unpopular knitting opinions! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the one I shared ☺️ I have another one to share with you but I can’t take credit for it. I had a viewer comment on my podcast one time that they didn’t think it was the responsibility of straight-sized designers to design their patterns to include plus sizes, they thought plus-sized designers should design for plus sizes 🤯 it was one of the strangest comments I’ve ever gotten and I have NO idea what to think of it. As a straight-sized designer who designs straight AND plus sizes, I’d LOVE to hear your take on this Laura ❤️

    • @_laurapenrose_
      @_laurapenrose_  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that is a really poor excuse. Actually, designing for larger bodies is no different to designing for ‘straight’ sized bodies. You just have to learn about it. The information is out there, there are in-depth standards to follow and so much info on how proportions differ. And not forgetting talking to, learning from and actually listening to people in larger bodies. I don’t think that’s too difficult. Finally, and I know this isn’t an option for everyone, but you can get your patterns professionally graded if you don’t feel you can do it yourself. X

    Loved this. Just happened upon your chat and you have yet another fan. You are delightfully engaging and obviously knowledgeable about your craft. I have to look up what "blown yarn" is. I think here in US it may be referred to as "woolen spun" but have to research this. By the way loved the sound of rain on your roof - to me it is soothing. I agree totally that being on a speed run with knitting is counter to what knitting can afford us - slowing down, being mindful, finding time to disengage from all the demands of everyday life and somehow finding a serene spot in the midst of the hubbub.

    • @_laurapenrose_
      @_laurapenrose_  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Welcome to the family!! Blown yarn is a type of yarn where they make a hollow tube with cotton or nylon, and then blow fibres into that tube! So it’s super light and airy and isn’t actually spun! Woolen spun yarns are definitely lighter than worsted, but blown yarn is super super light!! X

    • @meletcl
      @meletcl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@_laurapenrose_ Thanks for explanation of blown yarn! I haven't encountered it; I assume it is labeled as such or perhaps I would have to specifically seek it out by asking for it. I know woolen spun makes for a warmer garment so I assume blown yarn does too. Definitely going to delve into this topic.

    Very fun video. I have a few unpopular knitting opinions. 1) I find weaving in ends a bit of therapy. Good TV or music, and a hot beverage, and weave away. 2) Not a fan of balloon sleeves. They look fine. I don't find them to be practical at all. 3)Mohair is just pokey, itchy, and makes me feel like I have a hairball. Lovely, not comfy. 4) Not a fan of cropped sweaters. A lot look saggy and sloppy at the bottom hem, and personally, I want my back to be covered when I lean forward. 5)I prefer very fine needles appx 1.5-2mm to chunky needles above size 5mm. I can knit much r faster on small needles then large needles. 6) I find working with chunky yarn to get something done faster an odd statement from people that are literally making fabric stitch by stitch. Just enjoy the process. There's no reason to rush, in my opinion. If you want something fast, go buy it. If you want a chunky yarn look, great, just don't say that it's the best yarn because the projects go so fast. 7) I'm not a fan of shawls. I like making them, don't like wearing them. They are tedious and always in the way. All of these are just my own opinions and all said in a lighthearted way. It's your knitting. You're in charge of it, so go for it.

    So fun video! Realised I´ve got quite a few unpopular knitting opinions. Prefer knitting sweaters flat, don´t mind purling at all (I knit continental style norwegian purling), really like to knit with DPN:s and find weaving in ends at the end of a project meditative. 😁 I learnt knitting sweaters flat and started knitting in the round with DPN:s so I guess that´s why it doesn´t feel like extra work, plus purling goes really fast. I do enjoy handsewing aswell so allthou I weave in in ends as I knit to save time the act of weaving in those last few or many ends after blocking feels like a nice, peaceful moment finishing off the project.

    I throw, my grandma taught me when I was 6 and there is no need to push continental on everyone. I find pushing that method is just too much now. I treasure the way she taught me. I agree that the selfish term should go out the window! Was it selfish when those who had no money generation's ago, to have to make their own clothes? No, it was necessary. Love knitting my own garments. Great extra vid! Thnx

    My unpopular opinion about knitting is that I like to knit in pieces and later sew them together. You do have sewing up but when the sweater is done in one piece it is very heavy and bulky to handle and turn around. I hate that construction. A sleeve or a front is easy to handle and carry around. Plus a seamed garment is stronger and has more structure. So there. 🤓

So as a non mohair wearing dpn loving don’t make me seam ever again (I learnt at primary school in the 1970s with acrylic yarn and chubby little fingers trying to seam a dolls cardigan) knitter I’ll just keep knitting in my own little world .

    Thanks for this awesome video! How fun!
    I just wanted to share that I learned a way to do a 2x2 tubular bind-off without doing the swapping that makes it look messy. Its a sewn one similar to the 1x1 but with a slightly different 4 step process. The video I learned from is by “knit freedom” on youtube. the result is super neat and looks exactly like a 1x1 tubular. :)

    I watched while getting ready for work 😊 like other comments, I am more of a cardigan wearer than sweater but I'm not that keen on knitting flat! But I get a cardi at the end so it's okay. My unpopular opinion is that I have no interested in knitting socks. I might change my mind someday, but for now it's a hard pass 🙅🏻‍♀️ I also prefer knitting lace over cables 🧶🧶🧶

    hello, first i want to say that i really enjoy watching your podcast. I think it's really funny when you chat with your kids when they're in the room with you. that's real life. I found this episode very interesting. Personally I love all aspects of knitting (we say here in the Netherlands... A day not laughing is a day wasted but I also say a day not knitting is a day wasted 😂) I knit continental, english style, with circular needles, with dpn, with straight needles, I don't care, but what I hate when I’m done with in pieces knitted sweater is to sew it together. I can leave it in the basket for months or more. I always have something better to do than that…. pffffff i'm trying to do better...it's a shame for my job don't think you...yes Dolores.....grow up and do better 😉😂(I'm almost 60....about time) Have a nice weekend with you family, big hug and see you next time
    Greetings from the Netherlands
    Dolores ❤️😘

    I watched this while knitting on the back panel for my first ever dropped shoulder sweater. oh how I detest purling! but mainly because I find it difficult to ensure that my tension is even and that I don't row out 💔 I'm a continental knitter and what you said about your flat knitting being even does make me even more curious to try to learn english style. currently I'm using a smaller needle for my WS rows to help combat the rowing out and it took me four tries to find the right combination of needle tips.
    my own unpopular opinion: I wasn't crazy out the soufflé design when you first showed it. it's just not my usual style. however. it now has me in a death grip; I've even had dreams about it 😩 I am absolutely dying to cast on my own version! I can't wait for the workday to be over so that I can begin doing some proper investigations into what yarn I would like to use for it.

    I totally agree regarding magic loop. I learned to knit circular on DPNs and collected sets and sets of them (from thrift/second hand stores) and haven't used them for anything but cable needles since I learned magic loop. and I've never gotten ladders. Also, regarding acrylic yarn - I buy almost all of my wool secondhand, I do have acrylic, some came in the bags of secondhand yarn I purchased, some gifted to me. That said, I would never knit a garment in acrylic, in my opinion acrylic garments - handknit or store bought - are always going to make the wearer sweat and stink. That said, there may be a few people out there who can wear acrylic without my experience, more power to you.

    I love the fluff of mohair but I live in a mild climate (coastal North Carolina, USA). Our sweater season is very short and not intensely cold during our coldest temps. So, I limit the garments that contain mohair. But my Love Note with mohair….OMG! ♥️

    I tried to learn to knit twice, ten years apart, and gave up both times. On my third try, during the pandemic, I was taught continental style by someone online, and if it weren't for that I would have given up again. Continental completely rules, along with the Norwegian purl.

  • @Jodie_May92
    @Jodie_May92 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh I cannot stand seaming! I get absolutely no joy from patterns which are knitted flat and then seamed together as I think most of my joy from the process of knitting is watching the item grow and start to come to life as you knit and I don’t feel like you get that with a seamed garment until you start sewing it together. I don’t mind knitting flat for a flat object (blankets ect) or for flat parts of garments and I don’t mind doing techniques like picking up stitches or grafting using Kitchener stitch, as long as most of the garment is knit in one piece and you can sort of see what it’s developing into as you go then I’m happy 😂
    Also, congrats on the release of the Soufflé! I’ve picked up the pattern this morning and it looks lovely, it seems to be very popular as KNiTT Yarns are completely sold out of all my favourite shades of Lang Lace so looks like I’m going have to wait a little bit longer to be making my own Soufflé and I’m super excited to be wearing the finished piece. Absolutely beautiful design Laura, can’t wait for your next release 😊

  • @dabristudio

    Disagree with the continental knitting one! :D I started English knitting and I was hesitant to switch to continental as well because I was already doing it well, why would I change. I was also pretty fast doing English style. But continental was easy to pick up with a little bit of practice and its so much better for your joints in the long run. Just think about how much more movement goes into it, all the time you will knit over the years to come and save your wrists the pain :D It literally just takes a little bit of practice! I did continental for the first time on socks, and by the end of the first sock I was super comfortable already with the movements.. I even LOVE to continental purl :D don't write it off ;)

    Some unfiltered, unpopular opinions (sorry, hehe):
    - Large needles (anything above 5mm) are death
    - Lace is ugly (especially lace pattern panels)
    - Most of the popular designs on the hot right now page on Ravelry are ugly (apart from your Sufflé which is very cute, well done you! ;)
    - Handdyed veriegated yarn knits up SO ugly (though the skeins are beautiful)
    - Much of the knitting community embrace the same consumerism as those shopping fast fashion, but under the guise of sustainability.

      The last one is very true, everyone buying more yarn than they can knit (planning and buying is faster than knitting!). And I'm one of them although I recognize this - all the time trying to knit from stash because I have planned too many projects ahead, although it would be more fun to *plan a knit, buy the suitable yarn and knit it*, and repeat.

    • @annikak.837
      @annikak.837 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My opinion on needles: 3-5 mm is ok, anything else I dislike or the garment would be too thick or thin for me to wear.

    • @martanilsson94
      @martanilsson94 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@annikak.837 Definitely! The consumer patterns have changed expressions but are very much intact. The advantage to knitting is of course that from a human point of view, it is usually somewhat ethical (animal welfare aside), at least compared to fast fashion. and that it forces one to slow down a bit at least. However, I wish there was more information about the ecological footprint of yarn (emissions, pollution etc.) so that one could compare it to other clothes and realise that while wool is a fantastic fibre, there is no such thing as climate positive consumption. :)

    I got to the chunky sweaters bit. And I must say i agree. I love some chunky sweaters and cardigans HOWEVER i just worked with WATG crazy sexy wool and after wearing it a bit, it pills so quickly for the cost! :(((( I’m going to need to find another alternative or I’ve found Wool ease thick and quick held double makes. The weight of WATG and its not very “super chunky” as it is jumbo almost 0.o
    I love lace weight fluff! But alpaca is softer on my skin. Mohair gets a little scratchy for me but I found if its not a close to skin pattern, mohair is just fine. :)))

    Seaming can really help to make a finished garment keep its shape, especially if a larger size or heavier yarn eg cotton. If I'm making something bigger/looser like a summer cover up then I'd err towards working flat and seaming for that alone.

      You can crochet in a faux seam on the inside after the fact which helps if you have a finished sweater starting to sag, but it's a bit of a last ditch rescue.

    Prefer straight, but not tight, sleeves myself, I don't do "flappy" 😛
    DPNs ARE just lethal weapons that should require a certificate of sorts. Have to agree on the massively over sized knitted garment, "Mouldy's Orphan" anyone? Especially if cropped too. Over sized hoodies are a different story though!
    Budgetary constraints limit me to single strand for sweater quantities but I would still prefer it anyway.

    I haven´t been knitting that long so i might just lack experience but the first thing I knitted was socks and I learned on DPNs and I wouldn´t want those very short round knitting needles because I like having lots of needle to hold if that makes sense.
    My other two hot takes are that I despise amigurumi (apart from the really pretty, realistic animal type) and I don´t really like the look of cables

      The one suggestion I would make as someone who has knitted for over 50yrs, is that for the sake of your hands it is really worth while learning different methods. This isn't something that only happens to elderly people,it can occur at any age and being able to switch styles is a lifesaver.
