Who are the Acadians (aka, Cajuns)
The Acadians are descendants of French settlers who arrived in North America in the early 1600s. They established colonies in what is now Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island in Canada, a region known as Acadia. The Acadians developed a unique culture, characterized by their farming, fishing, and strong sense of community.
    The Great Expulsion
In the mid-1700s, the Acadians faced a devastating turn of events. The British took control of Acadia and, suspecting the Acadians of disloyalty, ordered their deportation in what is known as the Great Expulsion (Le Grand Dérangement) of 1755. Thousands of Acadians were forcibly removed from their homes, their properties were confiscated, and families were often separated. This tragic event scattered the Acadian people across various British colonies, including those along the Eastern Seaboard of what is now the United States, as well as to France and the Caribbean.
    Journey to Louisiana
Many Acadians eventually found their way to Louisiana, which was under Spanish control at the time and offered a more welcoming environment. The first groups arrived in the late 1760s, seeking a new home where they could preserve their way of life. In Louisiana, they settled in the bayous and prairies, areas that reminded them of their homeland.
    Becoming Cajuns
In Louisiana, the Acadians adapted to their new environment and became known as Cajuns, a term derived from "Acadian." They continued their traditions of farming and fishing and developed a distinct cultural identity. Cajun culture is characterized by its French dialect (Cajun French), unique cuisine, vibrant music, and lively dance traditions.

When you mentioned the wooden pegs in the house construction it reminded me of my moms house that was of course Acadian built in Nova Scotia. Square iron nails and wooden pegs.
