Fall Prep - Hive Checks

  • Prepping hives for fall by removing boxes taller than the third medium that aren't being used. Three mediums is the same height as two deeps and this is my preferred wintering size.
I've also got three hives to get ready to move out to the reorientation yard. When those are moved I'll have six more to move in the fall after fall honey supers come off. I'm not looking forward to that as the hives will be heavy!

Note: if you purchase from my Amazon store, a tiny amount of money will come out of Amazon's pocket and go into mine. The price to you is the same. They have deep pockets and I don't, so your support is appreciated.

I haven't seen a drone in a month. I was going to do some splits several weeks ago but didn't. Did recover a double deep hive that was left in a field for about 4 years with no attention at all . The bottom board and box was rotten and about on the ground swapped them out and got them home. Super heavy took me and my friend to lift them up in the truck. Great video and enjoyed it as always. Have you tried the better comb it's really nice but expensive but all they got to do is fill it and cap it .👍❤🐝🐝

I’ve never tried better comb…the expense might be worth it on starting nucs if you don’t have resources.

@@DuckRiverHoney caught a late swarm today. I'm going to try the better comb out and see how fast they work it. Thanks for the reply and good luck with all your bee's.

When it comes to hive beetles, some areas have them and some don’t . I have nine hives . Four in full sun and the other five are in evening shade . I basically have a few beetles in each hive that I was able to catch in the traps . The one hive that produced 11 gallons of honey has the highest count of beetles. The oil trap has twelve dead beetles, I killed an extra seven under the outer cover and the bees had more corralled up in the corners of the inner cover. That’s a real strong hive so I’m not really worried. I’ll be going into them tomorrow and do another hive tool test on the beetles if there are any left . In Prince George, Virginia we had an excellent spring honey flow . I also use diatomaceous earth (food grade) on the ground in front of all the hives . I use double deep hives so I can be able to make up five frame nucs next year to sell . We’re always trying to find ways to keep bees . Every method works . That real weak split may need to be recombined with a weaker one .

Nice! Like the music. Is that epidemic sound library? Glad you had a successful trip.

I also noticed that you have the green drone comb in @least 1 of your hives. Do you like them?
We used them this year for the first time and thought we were supposed to pull them out when we went into dearth they came with no instructions.

IMO they needed a heavier wax coating. Had lots of trouble getting them drawn.

What kind of feeder do you use? I have been using a top feeder and have found that some bees have gotten around the screen and drowned.

I use the double frame feeders with cap and ladder. Mann Lake calls them Pro feeders. I’ve been very happy. Can put them in an empty super if wanted, and stick more than one in. Versatile and flexible.

I’m using a rose shotgun mic plus a Rode Go wireless lapel mic. I’m shooting in 4 channel so I can mix the levels of dialogue or ambient better.
