Sorry to hear that Judith McGrath passed away a couple years ago 2017 I believe.

These returns were implemented by producers over the coming months' episodes as they tried to lure Val back to the series, and they _almost_ succeeded...
They were obviously struggling with what to do with the show for a while after Val left. Its pretty obvious in these episodes that they are trying out different things to see what will work and what won't.
