There is nothing more painfully true than a morning shifter (used to twiddling thumbs with nine more employees than the store can even use) seeing *first-hand* how understaffed and overworked night shift is, then still being genuinely furious that some tasks are left undone at the end of the night.

He assumes Sundays are busy as hell in our section when in reality it's one of the slowest days. He's moved shifts around to put more people on Sundays, which leaves some days that actually need more help shorthanded.

      Yup!
Used to work for a coffee place that would only staff 2 people for close, but 4 for open. God forbid we didn't polish the counters til you could eat off of them or restock the front.
Our registers and pay terminals didn't communicate, so you had to reconcile the two on an Excel sheet. Any shipping orders had to be logged there, too. Cash had to be manually counted and input to a different system. Managers (me) had to record the sales of the day.
We had six registers for selling coffee machines and grounds, a "tasting bar" in the back, and the actual coffee counter to handle in the front. Plus, we had to do the dishes the employees stacked up and clean out the fridge every few days.
We had to restock the back, clean it to our managers satisfaction, and recover the front.
Morning team had to open one register for the sales floor and the one for the coffee bar. If we were handing out iced coffee samples, they would prep those.
They had four people to do a handful of tasks. We had two people to do dozens, with customers who would eat into our hour we had to close. Morning team was always on our ass about how badly we left the store.

I can envision this so clearly. This kind of insanity is why my family buys all of our stuff days/weeks in advance, depending on the item in question. Obviously some things you have to buy closer to the day of, but it's a lot less hectic (and parking way easier!) to do it earlier. I think the only thing we've ever really had to do day of/before was picking up a reserved Honeybaked ham/turkey and that's just because that's sort of how it works.

    YES!😂😂😂
I will say having an evening shift, then the next day you have a morning shift is so hard for me. I have practically no time to cook anything for dinner, not time to clean up or watch TV, I have to be in bed by the time I get home, or else I might not get up in time for the next morning shift. I really hate it😢😅

I felt the "So you're the Bast@rd!!?" Deep deep in my soul. I've had to do opening shift, right after a closing shift, and the morning crew wondered why everything was so clean and organized... Most of the night/closers haven't a clue how chaotic it is to get everything ready in time, and leave 20+ of their cleaning duties for the morning shift to finish...

The amount of times my manager had to lock the door cuz people can't read a fuckin paper on the door with the time we close. And the one's that read it, ignored it. I shet you not I had a lady asking why can't we stay a little longer so she can buy some stuff and I asked her if she's ok staying longer at her work for other people. The audacity. I've had another lady write a complaint because the OWNER didn't say good morning to her

  • @ashleymiles3373

I hated evening shift and always heard complaining from morning shift before they left. They lost my sympathy after I worked some morning shifts. Customers in a good mood, everything in place from evening shift, and you get your shift out of the way early.

Long term night shifter, first and foremost NEVER swap, night shift is not geared to work days on a drop of a hat, days arent geared for nights. If theyre swapping you you need a weekend to shift your schedule, and i wanna be clear it IS a schedule shift.
The 6am wake up you described is indeed a thing, night shifters do it too tho your time may vary based on when you go to work. For a long time id be wide awake at 10/11pm cause thats when i woke up to go to work
Anyways, night shift has two flavors, and its entirely based on how you handle your off work time, some guys would come home at 6 or 7 and go straight to bed. Black out blinds, blackout curtains, hell i knew one guy who made wooden shutters from plywood hed draw in the morning to ensure TOTAL darkness when he went home. These folks usually wake up in the evening, theyre up for a few hours, go to work, and repeat. The other variant is what i did. Wed get off work at 6, be up till a pre determined time like say 4 or 5 in the evening, youd go to bed, and then based on when your shift started you woke up, went to work and treated it just like a normal 9 to 5 just the clock is inverted.
The problem is, to do this right, you need time to change your internal clock. Day shifters are USED to early mornings and usually relatively early evenings. Night shift is used to late mornings and late evenings. Most long term night shift i know keep their work schedule over the weekend too, so they may be awake, 5, 6, 7 am but youre in bed by 8 PM to get ready for a normal Monday. The problem though is this means getting them up in the morning is usually a fucking fight and a half, cause theyre so geared to be asleep around that time or its their "casual time" theyre almost always super laid back on schedules often running late or hell just rejecting plans cause their body is tired, and some wont even make plans if you wanna be awake in the day past a certain time.
I know personally coming off nights into days i legit burned like a motherfucker my first month on days, like lobster red cause i hadnt been awake through the height of the day in over 4 years.
When people joke night and day shift are too totally different worlds, its less a joke and more just twisted humor, because it truly is a very different world
