Question: Does this merely capture some or all of the grease that it sucks in, returning the filtered air into the ambient air in the room? Or doews it vent it through a duct to the outdoors?
Hi Alan, hope you can help me. So, I want to get a downdraft for the wife but I’ve yet to see how it vents the actual smoke or where it goes to. I’ve heard you still have to take it to a vent that goes outside ? Or you can have a Carbon filter next to a cabinet with filters. Please help. We don’t want the one you have to vent it outside. Help. Thank you And do you know any 4-5 stars rating. I don’t want one that will break down because I heard the cost to fix them might be expensive?
@@cristnuishope I am no expert, but after a good deal of reading, I would say any system that does not vent to the outdoors is inferior to those that do. And of those that do, there are still issues, anyway. If the vent is near a window, especially if it is under a window, the window will constantly get a greasy film on it. If it is unvented it is merely sucking the greasy air through a filtered. It's better than nothing, but not much. The only way to avoid all that us to cook anything greasy outdoors on a grill or outdoor oven of some sort.
There are too many variables to call one specific unit without knowing the parameters of your kitchen layout, cabinet configuration, appliance spec, and what you actually need. I think the main thing to identify is how many CFM you need based on what cooktop/range you have, in conjunction with where you need to mount the blower. There are some great models out there, but some have limitations for where and how the blower can be mounted. Also, like anything, quality on the components and moving parts can vary, so I would suggest, sticking with brands that are tried and true.
@@contactrenovations thank you for your detailed reply! I appreciate it! Are the downdraft ventilation systems built in the gas ranges or are they two separate purchases?
@@irenegann it’s a separate appliance. And, when buying a downdraft unit, you need to verify whether or not the blower is included with the purchase. Not such a big deal when you buy one at a store with a sales person as they would clearly explain this to you, but if you buy a downdraft unit online, sometimes it’s not always clear whether the blower comes with it or not.
@@irenegann not necessarily. I recommend talking to a sales person at an appliance store, and they can guide you towards combination of products that best suit your needs. Good luck!
It depends on which model you buy. Like any fan, the lower the sones, the quieter. However, the higher the CFM, the more noise it will make, potentially
@@contactrenovations I would like to purchase as powerful a blower as possible. Can that be installed UNDER the floor to reduce noise, OR can a "box" with sound damping be built around it to reduce noise? I could probably rig something like that up if the blower needs to be installed in the lower cabinetry.
What hood is that? I'm struggling to find information on downdraft hood to go behind a slide in range like you have in your video. It looks like most of the hoods are configured with the blower under the cooktop, which clearly doesn't work for the slide in range. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Hi Bart, In this case, we created a void behind the stove area (ate up some of the cabinet behind it) to have room to run the venting pipe behind and down to the mechanical room below. The blower is actually mounted in the floor joists below. The unit itself is the Zephyr DLI-E30ASX Hope that helps!

Hi Alan,
The down draft unit is vented to the exterior, with a blower to extract the hot air/steam/airborne grease.

What type of contractor can do this type of install? Thought we'd add one behind our induction range when we get a new countertop.
Generally a plumber or HVAC contractor, or an appliance installer.
Best downdraft gas range for my kitchen island?

I have a downdraft that has stopped working. Can’t seem to find anyone that actually repaires or replaces those. Any advise?
I’d start with an appliance sales center and ask them for a referral.
I went to Home Depot. The people they connected me said they don’t do downdrafts. Will try with applicants stores. Thank you.
The it recirculate or is it non ducted?
Non-ducted is same as recirculate, I believe.

Where does makeup air come from.
how much does it cost
It’ll really depend on the model you choose and the size of the blower. Generally, the price range will be between $2500-$3500.
What brand?
Is the down draft fan sep from stove?

We’re in the process of installing a unit by Faber. Check this out: Downdraft - Faber - SCLX3015BKNB-B
