Mary Chapin Carpenter was probably the only reason I ever started listening to country. Imagine someone intelligent with incredible writing ability and drive in country music! My father was into country music, the bar and booze and cheating and truck driving... his life was a cheap country song. Last saw him at my brother's wedding; he died to me long before he passed. It took someone really special to make me notice a change in country: that is MCC.
Everything we got, we got the hard way - the anthem of women from time immemorial. What a joy to watch and hear these marvelous women sing one of Mary Chapin carpenter’s best songs.
I don't cry easy these days, but I almost lost it when Tammy came on stage. God bless you Mary Chapin Carpenter for this beautiful video and the words the song say it all. You are the best!!!
This brings me to tears every. single. time. So many incredible women. Talk about strength, beauty and empowerment! and the look on those little girl faces in the audience....
Here's one country-loving man with goose bumps. The amount of talent that just kept washing up like waves on a beach. The collective stories could fill shelves upon shelves.
This video gives me chills and proves that Mary Chapin was respected in the country community for her writing abilities and the power in her voice and her lyrics. I lived 90's country and like older country as well, so I can name many of the women in this video, though I don't claim to know them all.
Talk about making an entrance, when all the ladies on stage take a step down and the legends walk in, what a show stopper. I couldn't name half of them, but I knew how big and important they all were by audience reaction. I wish I could find this DVD.
I love Mary Chapin Carpenter. Both she and Emmylou Harris are unrivaled in terms of the feeling and emotion they give in every song. What an incredible array of talented and gifted performers on stage at the same time.
The women of country music are the super stars. Your songs stir the heart, make me think , motivates me to do better, gets me to really listen and makes me want to love you, protect you, provide for you, and be loyal to you no matter what. You ladies are the best thing about country music.
WOW!! It's flippin 2020 and I have never seen this!! I remember very fondly the "He Thinks He'll Keep Her" ensemble but I've never seen this! Absolutely phennominal!! ..... I wonder if Barbara Mandrell was in that crowd. WHAT a treat! So awesome of MCC to do this! I feel lucky! ;)
Oh this made me cry seeing all these wonderful ladies together singing. Thank you Mary Chapin Carpenter for bringing them together! I grew up with all of them 💙
I had the privlege of meeting Chapin backstage once - she was just as warm and genuine as could be. I've watched this vid dozens of times, shared it and loved it. As an old radio guy - I can well appreciate the lyrics and the incredible effort it took to get (figuartively speaking) these grand old dames in the same place at the same time to sing a song they've all lived right along with their sisters everywhere, no matter what their occupation is. Brava Chapin and all the women on that stage!
We start off with the song "The Hard Way." So we're already at awesome. Then we have Wynonna and Kathy Mattea join in. Patty, Suzy, Michelle, Pam, Trisha, Emmylou. Tammy Wynette?? We're officially at dumbfounded. Now a tidal wave of legendary singers all taking a bow for their achievements. Every ingredient of this video is wonderful, but none more so than the fact that everything these ladies got, they indeed got the hard way. Imagine 50+ women writing the same autobiography - that's what we've got here. I defy anyone not to be inspired by this.
I don't remember seeing this video before but seeing Kitty Wells brings back memories of meeting her and how she and the others helped pave the way for all the wonderful women in country music today.
Well, Alison MacKenzie of the Cheers, Family Ties and Fletch fame who dubbed Patsy Cline since June 15, 1975 has signed a deal with Universal Music (Angel Records, Geffen Records, Mercury Nashville) with the expection of its unsuccessful album from Fall 1980 with overdubbed songs of the 1960's versions were not doing very well at all was "Always: Patsy Cline." She really rocked here in New York City - audiences and fans were praised with her lovely contributions here.
Just recently re-discovered MCC after loving her as a teenager. This was always my favorite of her songs and I never saw this special. What an awesome group of women!
I have lost count the amount of times i have seen this video ! Having been to four concerts in the UK my dream is to see her at Wolftrap on the lawn....i love her music and her values stand for so much that lacks in society today ! She is an inspiration not just to women but to all of us, and this video epitimises just what a star she is. From the very young Trisha Yearwood and Pam Tillis to the great and late Tammy Wynette such an amazing host of stars !
Rarely will one find this much talent in one place at one time, and the song fits; Nashville has normally been a man's town and all of these women have had to succeed in that atmosphere. They got it the hard way, and we're the better for it. Thanks, Chapin. This, I think, is from the CMT "Women of Country" show from the early 90's.
Well I just love every single one of these ladies they are awesome singers and they give us a lot to be happy about I'm always happy when I sing along with them keep up the good work ladies country forever
i never saw this video before, im astonished by all the talent here. Basically youre seeing the who's who in female CW music and they ALL got it the hard way. God bless you all and what good remains of America. It aint much!
This was an amazing performance, not about Country in Nashville, but because of the talent that graced the stage--not an easy way did they get into this field and have a career. They share many a character traits no doubt - drive, strength, courage, "inspiration" and "spark", but for sure these women came by their careers the "Hard Way". Wonderful befitting song that is timeless!! So glad kbman44 captured what we watched years ago. Thank you for such.
Who was NOT there? damm talk about a stage full of talent! The music award shows must have been spitting chips, because they NEVER would have been able to get all of these fantastic ladies on stage at the same time.
Such a powerful spark of inspiration. As a woman, like so many, single mom, but pushing through, went back to school, looking for work, nurturing my family. This song seriously speaks to me. When women come together, all the pain and struggles..but make something out of it all, nothing is a force like women coming together this way. Fantastic message, unbelievable harmony, you can just feel the soul they put into this.
Mary Chapin Carpenter, Wynonna, Kathy Mattea, Patty Loveless, Suzy Boggess, Pam Tillis, Trisha Yearwood, Emmylous Harris, Tammy Wynette. I believe the one with very short dark hair is Michelle Wirght. Does anyone know if that is correct?
I think this is from the CBS TV Special "The Women of Country" from 1993. The full cast is listed if you google it (TH-cam won't let me post the link).
Mary, Winnona Judd, Katie Mattea, ¿Lorrie Morgan?, Patty Loveless, Suzy Boggus, Pam Tilis, Thisha Yearwood, Emilou Harris, Tammy Wynette, ..., and some other: great song from Mary Chapin; see all those legends of Country Music is nice even when some are missed
@ariadne2956 Kentucky's own Patty Loveless. And if anyone does not have this cd (especially the ladies), it is seriously and without exaggeration one of the two or three cd's I would take if I could only have a handul. It is insightful and moving and entertaining. I was yojng when this came out, but I miss the 90s for country music.
3:49 the biggest talent on the stage gets 3 seconds in the background and is smiling and happy for it...but we didnt know all Martina McBride had at the time. She has done so much since then.
That's the who's who of the Women of Country music. Absolute legends ,Icons & Pioneers. These are the real women of Country music.
The early '90s ... When the ladies owned Nashville.
Always gets me when all those lady country singers from the past show up at the end.
She and Trisha are music to me
Damn playa. That’s some real shit
Loved Mary Chapin for years
Powerful women of country who paved the way for the younger generation.
I lost it on this song, SO much pure talent on that stage. Women of the ages. one word WOW.
I cry every time I watch this.
My favorite video. Love this song!!
TAAAAMMMMMYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Only a musical genius could pull this off, and share it. Thanks MaryChapin!
Beautifully said.
Im a 28 year old guy and i absolutley luv this !!!!!!! So much talent its brilliant
This video gives me chills and proves that Mary Chapin was respected in the country community for her writing abilities and the power in her voice and her lyrics. I lived 90's country and like older country as well, so I can name many of the women in this video, though I don't claim to know them all.
We got two lives. One we make. Great message
Best moment of Mary Chapin-Carpenter always for life
All these years later and it still brings me to tears.
I love Lynn Anderson. She looks like she's havin' a hell of a time up there.
When Kitty Wells, Patsy Montana and Jean Shepard came in my heart skipped a beat. OH MY GOD, 3 GREAT LEGENDS.
You're showing your age now Kitty Wells me too
Talk about making an entrance, when all the ladies on stage take a step down and the legends walk in, what a show stopper. I couldn't name half of them, but I knew how big and important they all were by audience reaction. I wish I could find this DVD.
This one video that brought a happy tear to my face.
I love Mary Chapin Carpenter. Both she and Emmylou Harris are unrivaled in terms of the feeling and emotion they give in every song. What an incredible array of talented and gifted performers on stage at the same time.
Its too bad country music doesnt have this kind of talent these days.
This was recorded in hairspray city. Awesome ladies!!!
The women of country music are the super stars. Your songs stir the heart, make me think , motivates me to do better, gets me to really listen and makes me want to love you, protect you, provide for you, and be loyal to you no matter what. You ladies are the best thing about country music.

Talent overload!
Oh this made me cry seeing all these wonderful ladies together singing. Thank you Mary Chapin Carpenter for bringing them together! I grew up with all of them 💙
All these country Greats! Super and Tammy Wynette . WOW! Love it
I could watch it a 100X and still be as impressed as my first time! This is truly awesome!!!
Early 90’s Country was so good.
Can't describe how much I love this song and to see all these beautiful ladies sing it together touched me deeply ❤️ God Bless
Total class what talent really is. It's to bad todays singers can't compare.
We start off with the song "The Hard Way." So we're already at awesome. Then we have Wynonna and Kathy Mattea join in. Patty, Suzy, Michelle, Pam, Trisha, Emmylou. Tammy Wynette?? This is probably the best description I've ever read. Bam Bam Bam. You nailed it, every word.
I know it was Mary Chapin Carpenter with Wynonna, Mattea, Loveless, Bogguss, Tillis, Yearwood, Emmylou, and Linda Ronstadt. Who is Michelle.
Tobias Dubose it's Michelle Wright, who I believe is from Canada. She was the walking definition of sultry.
Plus all the women who have passed...
@@su-rv2uq Where was this? Is it WolfTrap? What year was it? Can I find this whole concert?! Oh Lord PLEASE!!
I don't remember seeing this video before but seeing Kitty Wells brings back memories of meeting her and how she and the others helped pave the way for all the wonderful women in country music today.
😭😭🌠🌠🌠🌠🌠🌠
What an honor to have all those wonderful women singing MCC's song!!
+Brenda Gilsrud May I ask you--what year was this recorded? Mahalo! Richard
+THElaulauman not sure... 1995 maybe? Here's the wiki: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hard_Way_(Mary_Chapin_Carpenter_song)
I was there for this
Was Dolly Parton not there? Seems odd to leave her out.
Amazing moment in music history. I talked to Michelle Wright about this live on the air she was a proud woman and canadian being part of it all.
I’ve always loved how the younger women part for Tammy, then drop a step and face the relder group.
this is right here and all those woman up on that stage THATS TRUE COUNTRY while i do like taylor swift and all the others this is true country
If Patsy Cline had lived to full years, she could have come in on the last verse, and really rocked that place.
Well, Alison MacKenzie of the Cheers, Family Ties and Fletch fame who dubbed Patsy Cline since June 15, 1975
has signed a deal with Universal Music (Angel Records, Geffen Records, Mercury Nashville) with the expection

Still listening to this in 2023
The "BEAUTIFUL" ladies of country music 🎶
I have lost count the amount of times i have seen this video ! the amount of bangs and shoulder pads in this video is unbelivable!! aww the early 90's :)
Mary Chapin's songs are awesome!
Well I just love every single one of these ladies they are awesome singers and they give us a lot to be happy about I'm always happy when I sing along with them keep up the good work ladies country forever
A truly awesome gathering of talent... Sadly, a number of them have now passed on, but their music will live on for ever... 💫🎸🎻🪕
There was a lot of beauty on that stage.
Awesome..there will never be an moment like tis again God Bless you MCC...inspiring song
i never saw this video before, im astonished by all the talent here. Basically youre seeing the who's who in female CW music and they ALL got it the hard way. God bless you all and what good remains of America. It aint much!
YOU ain't lyin'!

One of the 10 best cds I own...to this day...almost 20 yrs later.
It makes me sad to think that the radio stations never play music from any of these ladies, anymore.
At least, not in Jacksonville
This is so cool! So much talent on that stage. And my all time favorite Donna Fargo gave me chills walking out! ❤️
I remember this live so glad it was posted. It made such an impact on me then. I just love this song and MCC!!!
They need to sing this again with all the same ladies
Man I wish there was a better quality of this video out there somewhere.
Who was NOT there? damm talk about a stage full of talent! The music award shows must have been spitting chips, because they NEVER would have been able to get all of these fantastic ladies on stage at the same time.
The message still rings true today.
I remember being in HS and watching this when it aired on TV.. I'm still trying to lift my jaw off the floor 😲
Such a powerful spark of inspiration. As a woman, like so many, single mom, but pushing through, went back to school, looking for work, nurturing my family. This song seriously speaks to me. Wow, I had never seen this before...the superstars just kept coming out...awesome...love MCC so much. And R.I.P. Kitty Wells
Beautiful Emmylou!
Mary Chapin hit #11 in Billboard, 7-3-92. God bless!
okay, i"m crying. this is great.
Dolly and Reba must have been on tour. Loretta was taking care of Doo when this was filmed.
Reba was there, but where was Dolly?
I think she was out on a promotion tour for her movie Straight Talk and the album that she wrote for the film. Neither performed well.
This is special !! What talent
I LOVE this! I hadn't seen it before. All the ladies kept coming out and then Tammy - I almost screamed! ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!
Just came across this video. A wonderful anthem for these ladies, some of whom are no longer with us on "This Side Of Jordan."
Brilliant, fantastic I would love to play with this lady ray twelve strings 👍👍👍👍👍
So much talent on 1 stage! thanks for posting.
This is incredible.
Can you imagine what it was like for MCC, every woman of country that they could get in one place, singing HER song...describing THEIR lives..
Most of the legendary artists who are in the video including the late first lady of country music Tammy wynette got it the hard way
When I want a good cry and all the greatness & joy in the world I watch this vid
This still gives me goosebumps!
Turned to channel just as this came on. Best finale ever.
Legends!
love all the women on stage. great song!
My go- to, happy cry video.
She did it right here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
happy womens day! This classic song will never be forgotten!
I think this is from the CBS TV Special "The Women of Country" from 1993. The full cast is listed if you google it (TH-cam won't let me post the link).
Three words queens of Country
Mary, Winnona Judd, Katie Mattea, ¿Lorrie Morgan?, Patty Loveless, Suzy Boggus, Pam Tilis, Thisha Yearwood, Emilou Harris, Tammy Wynette, ..., and some other: great song from Mary Chapin; see all those legends of Country Music is nice even when some are missed

Love it!!! Amazing ladies - would love to see this remake!!!
Legends! So cool
MCC is the best.
I love the opening to this song
Awesome...goosebumps... but where's Dolly??? And TANYA!!!
Tanya was there, but I don't know why she didn't participate in the finale.
so good....but a few are missing.
3:49 the biggest talent on the stage gets 3 seconds in the background and is smiling and happy for it...but we didnt know all Martina McBride had at the time. She has done so much since then.
When the ladies in front took a step down from the main stage, you knew something big was about to happen.
such talent love katie. xx
