    She seems like she has a lot of energy, which means she should be receptive to training and learning tricks. That would be a great way to keep her active while at a show, so she doesn't get bored and fly off. Especially if you can find certain things that show off parts of body (wings, claws, beak, ect), or how turacos behave in the wild. Even seeing if she could fly over the students to a co-worker, or someone from the audience would be really cool.

      If memory serves me right, I think she covered this in another training video.
      You are right, and they do get stuffed or bored of the treats.
      So she takes a break and tries another day.
      I’m trying to think of which animal was doing this…if I remember I can link the video.

      That's actually where the term 'fed-up' comes from. It was historically used in falconry to describe a bird that had eaten so much that they weren't hungry anymore and, therefore, wouldn't do whatever you were asking them to. Jessie has talked about this in previous episodes, animals getting bored and/or full is the main reason you should always keep training sessions short. The other important thing is to make sure that the animal only ever gets that particular treat as a training reward, so if they want it they have to work for it.

    Do you have any tips for how to start crate/carrier training for a pet who already hates the carrier?

    • @PonderingStudent
      @PonderingStudent 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd start by target training, then once that behaviour is firmly established, bring the crate into the room. Initially, don't try to target the animal into the crate, just target train them as normal with the crate around. Once they stop reacting to the crate just being there, gradually target them closer to it, then into it and straight back out again, then into it for a bit longer, then into it and shutting the door briefly, etc.
      The other thing you could try alongside this is just leaving the crate near to somewhere the pet spends a lot of time doing something it enjoys (like near its bed or food bowl). If it won't even approach them if the crate is nearby, put it some distance away and gradually move it closer over several days. That way the crate becomes something that is just part of its normal environment, rather than something that only appears when it's time to go to the vet. On that note, once your animal is finally comfortable going into the crate, take it for some trips in the crate that aren't to the vet, even if you just drive it around, stop and feed it treats halfway and then go home again. That way the crate isn't only associated with negative experiences.
      Whatever you try, expect it to be a long, slow process. It will take much longer to get an animal that already hates crates to be comfortable in one than it would one who'd never seen a crate before.

    Can Sunny learn tricks to keep her busy during the presentations? I don't know what her natural behaviours are but maybe she has some that she could demonstrate as tricks, like some of the smaller parrot type birds demonstrate hanging upside down.

    • @animalwondersmontana
      @animalwondersmontana  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I like how you think! Turacos are really good at running on branches, so we're hoping to showcase that by having her run foot over foot down a straight branch in shows. For reference, parrots have a hard time walking foot over foot, so to move down a branch they will often side step. We're also hoping to capture her defensive wing flare on cue so she can willingly show off her awesome red flight feathers. So we have exciting goals in mind, but it'll take small steps to get there.

    • @SomeoneBeginingWithI
      @SomeoneBeginingWithI 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@animalwondersmontana Thank you! Those things sound really good for presentations. Maybe for some shows you could take both Sunny and one of the parrots, so the audience can see how they would move differently on the same branch.
