Solid and fair review. Vended sounded like they want to play it safe on their debut. Not venture out and come up with their own unique sound. Hopefully, with more experience; they'll carve their own identity with their next album.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Yeah, I'd agree. I think this album was intended to ride some coattails a bit. We'll see what happens on their next one I guess.
@@thrallsofmetal My 13 year old Daughter loves the Deftones more than life and its her favorite band its burned me out a bit on them but i still do enjoy the Deftones
Honestly 'nu metal nepotism' is a great way to put it. Its a totally fiiiiine album all things considered but if it weren't for the connection to Slipknot I don't think anybody would pay attention to this.
Necrotic Nick- Agreed. At least they went for their parent's earlier sound but yeah... this band firmly planted itself in the shadow of the "parent band" and seems content to feed directly off them.
Good review. I’m not too surprised that they’re not exactly pushing the creative envelope with this one. I think they definitely have the potential to become a more unique band in the future, and hopefully they do, because clearly the members have some talent. From my experience it’s not uncommon for new bands to wear their influences on their sleeves, especially considering the connections they have to Slipknot, which clearly shows in their musical style. Don’t see myself returning to this one too much, but I’ll definitely check out anything they release in the future. Also, any plans on reviewing the new Kanonenfieber album?
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Yeah, I wasn't too surprised either but I kinda hoped they'd try to jump outside of the box a bit here. The nepotism thing is already kind of a slight against them but essentially sounding just like Slipknot just reinforces that. Still, this may change with the next one as they might find their own sound or at least a better blend. We didn't have time for that one this weekend and honestly I'm really not familiar with them but from what I heard I might check out Kanonenfieber in the future. They seem pretty interesting.
Bad news, Nick. Opeth's new album has been postponed until November 22nd due to manufacturing delays. That same weekend will also have the new long-awaited from Ice-T's band Body Count, entitled MERCILESS!
I absolutely abhor the nu metal sound as a whole, but recognize some of the musicians are really good. But I would not be heartbroken if the recent attempts to revive the genre fall flat. Still, good review and great that you guys gave it a balanced, unbiased listen.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Yeah, there's still some nu metal I enjoy but I don't want it to become a giant nostalgic surge to the point where it's oversaturated again.
I actually enjoyed it and think there's a ton of potential, I think it was a bit of a one trick pony album in total except the end, the last two tracks (Downfall & As We Know It) were highlights for me. Simon Crahan was killing that drum kit and personally stole the show by my books, with Griffin Taylor's vocals being killer also (the cleans are so identical to his father's). Grod and Cole did some damn nice guitar work and Jeremiah's bass was a good foundation. Give about five-ten more years and I say they'll be headlining festivals with some big hits under their belts P.S. note: They'll always be "NepoKnot" in my books, but not because they aren't talented, because they wouldn't be having their own headlining tour like this or be getting onto big tours the way they are without their fathers' influence. No other band this early in their career gets Loudwire, Revolver, and stuff like that reviewing them already
Necrotic Nick- It wasn't for me but I'm glad you dug it. I'll give them another chance in the future just to see if they try to get out from under Slipknot's shadow though. I do think they're talented musicians so I think at some point that will happen. I agree with the nepotism angle. This band was created with a built in fanbase and a lot of help from the "parent band". If this band didn't have a VERY direct relation to Slipknot I don't think anyone would really be talking about them.
I snagged this and jammed it about an hour ago. As a huge Slipknot fan, I love it. Obvious early Slipknot style and I just thoroughly enjoyed the listen. They’ll kill it on their next one, as I’m sure they’ll venture out a little more
Necrotic Nick- It has some moments but it's such a carbon copy that I just feel like I could get a better version of this album just by jamming Slipknot's self titled or Iowa honestly. Maybe on the next album they'll strike out a bit more on their own but this was kinda paint by numbers.
If it was 20 years ago and I was the same person I was when I got into Slipknot, Soulfly etc. I would probably dig these guys. I stopped listening to Slipknot 20 years ago, and only last year started to get back into them, simply because of nostalgia. There are a bunch of bands I listen to now, that if they came out now I probably wouldn't listen to them simply because they wouldn't have the nostalgia and the comfort of familiarity eg. Fear Factory, Machinehead, Slipknot, Soulfly. Vended doesn't come with any nostalgia for me though, so I don't think I'd bother with them. I really hope in an album, or 2 they really find their sound and own identity. I'll probably keep my eye on them out of curiosity.
Necrotic Nick- Honestly, I'd probably be the same way even though I'd probably still say this sounds too much like a diet version of Slipknot. I still enjoy Slipknot though not as much as I did back in the day and that definitely goes for a a fair amount of bands I got into 25 years ago. If this band strikes out on their own and really works to find their own identity on the next one I'll give them another shot but for now I'm not really that impressed.
Love the reference to Stampin Ground, a real UK classic that I saw supporting Chimaira back in the day. I understand the nepotism with Vended, I haven't heard the full album yet but I'm fully expecting Slipknot-lite. It's not as egregious to me as Tetrarch pretty much lifting one of the main riffs from The Heretic Anthem in one of their songs, haha.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I love that Stampin Ground album. I heard Officer Down on a comp years ago and finally found a copy Carved From Empty Words like last year. Yeah, if you're expecting Slipknot-lite that is pretty much what you'll get here. The nepotism thing though... it was hard for me imagining this band getting signed or promoted heavily on the merits of the music alone.
I thought the album was alright, if a little unoriginal sounding. If they develop their own sound rather than just continuing to ape what their fathers are doing, they could be a really good band
I'm seeing Vended live next month for the first time at a bar that holds a few hundred people. I suspect it will feel like an off brand Slipknot in this small venue. I'm huge on Slipknot though so I anticipate a decent time.
Necrotic Nick- I'd say even if you're a big Slipknot fan you still might call it a carbon copy. I'll have to check out Kanonenfieber at some point. I've seen a lot of people bring them up but I've yet to check any of their stuff out.
I listened to it this morning. All in all, its a good debut but I felt that is had some filler. Out of the 13 tracks, 3 of them were short interludes. I thought Serenity was a solid single and Disparager reminded me of "The Shape" from Iowa. I think Vended has a good future ahead, they just need to focus on separating themselves as their own band and out of Slipknot's shadow so to speak.
Necrotic Nick- It was OK at best for me but I do agree with their being some filler especially at the end of the album. Those last 3 felt like incomplete ideas for songs for the most part. They're definitely talented but I agree they need to forge their own identity here instead of just being Slipknot Junior.
I agree with the comments a few others made. Feels like a waste reviewing this instead of some other new releases. I wouldn't spin this record if someone paid me to. Just not the kind of music I'm into. I cant do Slipknot, and def cant do a cheap Slipknot ripoff. Just my opinions.
Has some killer moments but overall, i started losing interest as the album went on. The potential is definitely there though. Maybe theyll be in a future episode of bands who had a rocky start
Necrotic Nick- It does have some moments but it really just sounds too much like Slipknot. Hopefully with the next one they branch out a bit more and forge their own musical identity because this is riding some serious coattails here.
Only 6 real songs and 5 of them are good, clocking in at less than 40 min of worth while listening; closer to an EP than what I would consider an LP and therefor not worth buying on vinyl. Nepo Slipknot is just kinda phoning it in with this one and I do not really feel the need to put the album in rotation.
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, the last three tracks and the interludes made it feel like those tracks were there to pad out the album's length a bit. If this band didn't sound almost identical to Slipknot I might not have an issue with the release but the apple did not fall far at all from the tree here.
This album is cold dookie to be honest, lol, are you going to review the load of kick ass albums this week like: Avernus, Dreamless Veil, Inherits The Void, Glacial Tomb, Coffin Rot, Mork, Defiled, Crypt Crawler, or Thorium? I highly recommend giving those a listen, I wish I could buy them all but I would go broke if I did. The first week of October is loaded with mandatory metal too, my bank account is gonna be hurting soon! lol
Necrotic Nick- I was morbidly curious about this one honestly. My expectations were low admittedly and they were pretty much met. I'm eventually gonna cover more of those other releases but man, these weeks are getting overloaded with releases here lately. It's hard to keep up lol.
Really hope these guys start crafting a more unique sound after this album because the members are clearly very talented.
Necrotic Nick- I think they're definitely talented but the borrowed identity has got to go. We'll see what they do on the next one.
