Whenever I hear some studio talking about a game costing $100M or more to make, the question always comes back to . . . how? If you assume the game took 5 years from start to finish (some are shorter, some are longer), thats $20M per year. If we assume you pay everybody working on it well, maybe $150,000, that means you had a team of ~135 working full time for 5 years on it. The reality is, we know that's not the case. We know not everyone is paid that much, not everyone is working on the game for it's full development, and so on.
For games in that budget range, the team will be much larger than 135. All of the AAA studios you've heard of are in the 350-500 range or larger. Then, there is the cost of hiring contract work and working with 3rd party studios to complete assets the core team doesn't have the bandwidth for. There are usually lots of different licensing fees for ip, music, or who knows what. Marketing is also very expensive, 50k doesn't go very far in the world of advertising. Getting any degree of celebrity talent for voice acting is extremely expensive, and you absolutely dont just grab level designers and put them in the sound booth for your main characters. Then there other expenses like health insurance, 401k matching, and more. Those things aren't free. And of course, the company needs... an office, have you forgotten this? Leases on office spaces for that many people are quite expensive. Don't forget licenses for software, are you aware of how many different programs are used, or how much 100 seats of maya cost annually? There are also engine fees if the studio isn't using an in-house engine. If you want games that run on 4090s or ps5 pros, you need to have a good portion of your team actually testing and developing on that caliber of hardware. Last but not least, this isn't an expense per se, but the platform takes a big chunk out of sales, unless there's a first party agreement. So hopefully you can see why after 4 or 5 years of this, 100 million is a reasonable amount of money to have spent. Knowing all that, the better question would be, why cant this be accomplished with fewer people? Rather than write more, I'll just say that developing new ambitious games is anything but straightforward
I think that major AAA developers & publishers (like Blizzard, EA, Ubisoft) are failing with recent game launches because they're focusing too much on making money and not enough on making good games. If they want to make money, they need to go back to their roots and focus on making damn good games. If your game is good it will sell and you will make money. What happened to logical thinking?
Big business happened. CEOs and boards of directors don't care about the products they make. The more dollars, the better. It's about setting the high score in the bank account before your time is up, because that "matters" for some reason
Don't forget about Ubisoft and EA also pushing political agendas nobody asked for into recent games as well. The "modern audience" doesn't exist. Ask Dustborn all about it, with their like 6 players 😂
Maybe it's my mental gymnastics taking over(due to Rockstart milking GTA 5 and online for money)but I want to take a guess Rockstart if possible wants to release GTA 6 just before the Xbox series X and PS5 are close to the end of their life span. This way they can release it for the current generation, then re-release it a year or so later "Upgraded" for next gen consoles and PC release. They know gamers would buy it twice.
What we *really* don't want to hear: "We're delaying Grand Theft Auto 6 because we are actively working on filling the game with micro transactions and ensuring that it cannot be completed without them."
13:45 - When I worked at Toys R Us in the 90s, games were around $60, with some going as high at $80 and rarely, sometimes more. That's the equivalent of $130 - $175 today. I totally get wanting to save money on games, and not paying more than we have to. I get that back then, cartridge and packaging costs were a thing, and now with digital downloads, a lot of money is saved by not having manufacturing and distribution costs. And player base is broader. I get all that. That's probably why prices haven't risen at all in 30+ years, despite their costs going up. The hottest games from 1995 cost around $2M to make. Today, triple AAA titles cost $40M - $100M. I agree, it sucks to have prices go up. But, it is also unreasonable to expect them to stay $50 - $70 forever.
I wouldnt say it's the absolute worst thing. But most of the time it definitely isn't the best. It works for a few games, but there's too many awful ones. No, the worst things that have happened are these companies regularly releasing unfinished games and charging full price, and DEI slop
Every time a crappy live service game fails and the greedy corporate shills decide to cancel their future plans for more live service crap, an Angel gets its wings. I celebrate each of those stories…😇
I don't think Grand Theft Auto VI isn't going to live up to the hype at launch. I think people have been waiting too long for this game and there's too much expectation of what it's supposed to be, it's not going to live up to the 10+ years of waiting. Add that with the changing landscape of video games and entertainment.
GTA first came out almost 30 years ago. It was given an opportunity to evolve into something on GTA III Vice City in San Andreas came out. But in the almost 20 years since those games have came out a lot of things have changed.
That guy, Matthew Ball or his firm, was hired by either one or multiple AAA publishers in an attempt to move the minimum price to $100, or as close as they can get away with it. Capcom CEO said it, and (what a surprise) T2 CEO also said it before this report came out. This is the industry pushing it. Since CEO words turns into mockery in the news, they hired an "analyst" to try and give legitimacy to it. "Appeal to authority" Ask this Ball guy who payed for the report! "Epyllion provides investment and strategic advisory services"

Don't get your hopes up for GTA6. Very few games have been in development for so long and come out to be good games. Its not a guarantee, but you could set your watch to it.
Except for the fact that Rockstar always takes a long time between games. GTA 5 took a while after 4, and it became one of the most successful games of all time.
Calling it right now: GTA 6 is going to fail. Not saying it’s going to be bad, it’ll probably be great. But the hype is holding it to such a high standard, there’s no possible way it will deliver. It’s gonna come out, fall flat on its face and everyone will just go back to GTA 5 Online.
Even if you hate Xbox and are Sony for life, you should want Xbox to continue making consoles. You will be very disappointed in the moves Sony would make if they had no direct competition… they make shady moves already.
Does anyone not want an overambitous crossover fighting game ever again? Like say, Smash Bros, MVC, CVS, Capcom All Stars, CN vs Nick, DC vs Bamco or Jump Fighterz?
I just hate it because the discussions quickly devolve into roster speculation nonsense and suddenly there's all these wannabe influencers chasing clout by "leaking" the next DLC. It was fun like a decade ago when it was mostly jokes and shitposts.
I mean, companies should hire QAs that'll keep most of the things in the game in check - manual and/or automation testing. What companies do nowadays is release an unfinished version, and wait for players to do the QA. To cut cost. The problem is always with the top brass, they are so out of touch with the development, and so is marketing team.
The annoying thing about the price discussion is when people in the industry say "games are cheaper to buy now in real terms" what about the fact digital games still cost £60-£70 even though there is 0 cost to physically produce them? They are making plenty of money as is
With the series S being the issue for certain games, why doesn’t Xbox at least release a cloud version on the S, like Nintendo does? It’s not a perfect solution, but they have a lot invested into cloud streaming, and it would allow at least some series S owners the chance to play games like Wukong and Monster Hunter Wilds.
I find your number 1 really funny because up here in Canada, full price AAA releases are $80 plus tax. Hell sometimes they cost more than that. The Silent Hill 2 remake still costs $93.49 on Steam and it's been that way since release. If the price goes up in the US, their going up everywhere else as well.
Dan Houser left after RDR2.. which IS WHY GTA 6 took so long btw, as prelims for the game started in 2014.. That’s 5 years of GTA 6 being in its preliminary stage before Dan Houser left.. he’s definitely chimed in on the game before he made his departure after RDR2 was finished.
It'll be fine. He likely worked on the game before leaving. And besides, its not just Dan Houser who was responsible for everything. A lot of the creatives are still working at Rockstar, and there are more writers

I personally dont care if GTA 6 comes out next year when they used to put out a GTA every year and then slowed down considerably. Game companies need to nut up and just put these other games out and not care about what Rockstar does.
For the push for games to go to $100. Makes me wonder if it's a push for all these "+" services. Where you don't own the game, but basically rent it. We've seen Ubisoft mention that "Players should get used to not owning games.", and with that being said, it makes me very wary about what is trying to be pulled.
We so how that statement has come to bit Ubisoft in the end. Because of that statement, instead feeling bad about Ubisoft is going under, people are celebrating it.
STOP.. the budgets haven’t shot up, mismanagements and overpaid managers/ceo’s/marketing is the main reason these games are “expensive” to make. If you most like had a good luck the actual development would most like be 25% of what you was told the other 75% is fluff.
I do NOT want to hear about any more super hero games anymore. Not just for this year, but PERMANENTLY! It's all Sony has: superhero games. ENOUGH! It's getting old!
If they start charging $80 - $100 for games, I'm definitely done. In an era where cost of living is so high that's a lot to ask. Yeah I know the cost of making and developing them is high, but that's the reason they went from 50 to 60 to now 70. Saying we accepted it signifies we had a choice, we don't if we want to play it. Sure we can wait but if they keep pushing digital those games take way longer than physical editions to drop in price. I have a backlog to last if they just keep increasing.
I never pay full price for video games. And there is no way I would pay for any game at a price that is 1/4 the value of the thing I’m going to play it on.
If games were actually finished on launch I think people would be more receptive to paying more. I mean, they'd probably still hate it but at least you aren't paying more for a game that won't actually be in a stable state for a few months. Right now, if you can wait a few months then most games will play better thanks to patches AND they'll be discounted so you're getting a better product for less money
The industry discussing 100 Dollars for a full price game, because GTA 6 is coming out is like a supermarket discounter raising grocery prices, in order to compete with that fine italian restaurant across the street XD
I have no problem with paying 100$ for a game. I'd pay that for Eldenring, I'd pay that for Dark Arisen. I'd pay that for a Saints Row 2 remaster or maybe a tenchu remaster with all the old games on it. I don't plan on repeating my mistakes. I GTA4 was pretty good, Vice city was awesome. GTA5 was a disappointment, specifically the online but it's core gameplay was lacking. I had my fun with it and I learned my lesson. I'm gonna wait years before I look at GTA6. I'm gonna look for patterns, and even if I feel like the gameplay is better, I don't want to play through this slow dead drip feed of content like both GTA Online and RDR2 Online. By the time RDR2 could be enjoyed without game breaking interruption, I was already on top of the world. I'll pay $100 for a game easy. Better have $100 gameplay. IMO, there's maybe 1 of those every few years. Good luck.

13:48 If the prices go up and you buy it you are the problem. Sadly some mindless people already will buy GTA6 no matter the cost.
I hope that Ghost of Yotei and GTA VI will not be delayed to 2026.
...and not cost $100 for the base game
@@jaughnekow yeah at this point rockstar should be paying us for making us wait that long
CONFIRMED DELAYED TIL 4TH QUARTER 2028
I'm going to play both so much I wouldn't mind one of them getting delayed 😂
Stupid, its really obvius that GTA wont release this year
Remember kids... GTAV originally came out 2 console generations ago...
I don't want to remember that...
It has more consoles, than the console generation before it had GTA's.
3:54 😂😂😂😂 "we dontwant them to release games again" savage😂
All your vehicles now burn fuel which must be refilled and purchased with shark cards!
Live service games are the worst thing to happen to the industry
I wouldnt say it's the absolute worst thing. But most of the time it definitely isn't the best. It works for a few games, but there's too many awful ones. No, the worst things that have happened are these companies regularly releasing unfinished games and charging full price, and DEI slop
My favorite part about that NFT Darkest Dungeon knockoff is how insanely blatant it is that they’re just stealing from hero forge for their models
It'll be like fallout 4 again. To many people get unrealistically hyped for AAA games when they have gone down in quality so much.
GTA first came out almost 30 years ago. It was given an opportunity to evolve into something on GTA III Vice City in San Andreas came out. But in the almost 20 years since those games have came out a lot of things have changed.
I love this channel, but what a clickbait thumbnail. This is the kind of stuff that starts false news rumors in the industry.
Castlevania: Aura of Holy Might (2-3-2025)
That guy, Matthew Ball or his firm, was hired by either one or multiple AAA publishers in an attempt to move the minimum price to $100, or as close as they can get away with it.
Every Insomniac game to have you playing half the game as a non superhero in a superhero game.
Look forward to that in Wolverine, Sweet Baby has a hand in it, so you know they're gonna find a way to add some tedious missions again 😂
@@UwUOwl its hilarious that their entire job is to advice companies how to make cool content for women, and all they do is piss of the entire fanbase with how terrible and bad that content is, almost as if they want to promote how terrible inclusion is instead of making cool missions
@@UwUOwl absolutely. It’ll be the deaf mission times 1,000
Even $70 has been pushing it too far. Still is a suckish price.
Are you american?
@nikobellic8002 Doesn't matter in the slightest. It gets worse when the prices translate to most other countries, it is already at a price that I do not want to buy full priced AAA games anymore. So, I do not want to see it raised.
I don’t want to see games that continue coming out on the last generation of consoles. Focus on PS5 and Series X/S games only, leave the last generation behind.
I still liked the first descendant as a live service game. Not to play every day but from time to time, once a week, I like it
I am so over GTA 6. I didn't think the video of it looks that great.
Don't get your hopes up for GTA6.
Very few games have been in development for so long and come out to be good games.
Its not a guarantee, but you could set your watch to it.
Except for the fact that Rockstar always takes a long time between games. GTA 5 took a while after 4, and it became one of the most successful games of all time.
rockstar legit only makes 1 game at a time with they track record now days if gta6 comes out a mess they would look like clowns
@@jeremyorth5138 Took a long time? Yeah let's just completely gloss it over! It wasn't 12 freaking years between gta 4 and gta 5 pal!
@ That's what you said about bethesda and starfield.
@@khatdubell I mean yes you are mostly right but it's gta 6 man.
I don’t know about the rest of the world but here in Australia games are already at the hundred dollar mark for buying them.
Right? I’ve seen so many new releases at 109/119.. special editions 149… it’s crazy
GTA is over played and I don’t see the hype. It’s been played out by this point.
Hype is right there your fault for not being able to see it.
Silksong in 2025 would be nice. Should be better than GTA 6.
Quality over quantity right fellas?
Licensing Nightmare inbound haha!
What about no more developer layoffs?
The annoying thing about the price discussion is when people in the industry say "games are cheaper to buy now in real terms" what about the fact digital games still cost £60-£70 even though there is 0 cost to physically produce them? They are making plenty of money as is
Im more excited for DOOM than GTV 6
What an absolute clickbait thumbnail lmfao. I almost had a heart attack when I first saw it😂
Being a PC gamer I don't care when GTA6 gets released, because we get to wait well over a year before it goes to PC.

@@chartier67 pc gamers also get a lot of games that consoles don’t get, so you have plenty of games to play while you wait.
True that
Hey cousin! Want to go bowling? xD

Let the console peasants do the beta testing.
I can't even lie, Rockstar is getting every single one of those 100 dollars. They're one of the literal few developers that actually earn their price

Oh no how ever will people cope with not getting a Bloodborne 2, not as if there are 57 other soulsborne games out there
With the series S being the issue for certain games, why doesn’t Xbox at least release a cloud version on the S, like Nintendo does? It’s not a perfect solution, but they have a lot invested into cloud streaming, and it would allow at least some series S owners the chance to play games like Wukong and Monster Hunter Wilds.
I find your number 1 really funny because up here in Canada, full price AAA releases are $80 plus tax. Hell sometimes they cost more than that. The Silent Hill 2 remake still costs $93.49 on Steam and it's been that way since release. If the price goes up in the US, their going up everywhere else as well.
FF7 remastered was one of those that cost more - 110 $ total !
for a game I uninstalled after 4-5 hours of playing the crack lol
@@StubzTurner Metal gear solid VR missions was $80 in 1998...equal to 154 dollars today... how much do you think video games should cost?

Dan Houser leaving Rockstar makes me worried about this next GTA
When Leslie benzies left it died
Dan Houser left after RDR2.. which IS WHY GTA 6 took so long btw, as prelims for the game started in 2014..
That’s 5 years of GTA 6 being in its preliminary stage before Dan Houser left.. he’s definitely chimed in on the game before he made his departure after RDR2 was finished.

Thats a shame
As you should be. Already heard the jokes have been toned down. So, the modern audience doesn't get offended.
It'll be fine. He likely worked on the game before leaving. And besides, its not just Dan Houser who was responsible for everything. A lot of the creatives are still working at Rockstar, and there are more writers
So glad I’m a patient gamer. I’ll wait til gta 6 is 30 bucks before I drop more than 60 for a game

Unrelated but Jake is over-enunciating words that end with T and it’s killing me.
“We don’t want” lmao
Elden ring becoming Fortnite broke my heart
5:56 or a PC release
I have not bought a 70 dollar game and wont buy a game for 100
If the games going to be $100, that means No more micro transactions and free dlc
I never pay full price for video games.
And there is no way I would pay for any game at a price that is 1/4 the value of the thing I’m going to play it on.
I wouldn't mind GTA 6 getting delayed. Hell, I'd be surprised if it came out in 2025
0:27 delayed again? Did it have a date?
I’m expecting GTA 6 to be delayed. We’ve seen no gameplay or anything else outside of the 1 trailer.
I didnt buy aaa trash at 70; i aint buying at 100
If games were actually finished on launch I think people would be more receptive to paying more. I mean, they'd probably still hate it but at least you aren't paying more for a game that won't actually be in a stable state for a few months. Right now, if you can wait a few months then most games will play better thanks to patches AND they'll be discounted so you're getting a better product for less money
GTA6 being delayed could mean the game's still not ready for prime-time and Rockstar doesn't want the game to become the next Cyberpunk 2077.
I learned how to tattoo in the 5 years, I quit playing GTA5 lol.
That number 9, bro.... you nailed it!
GTA 6 is for sure getting delayed, I can't even a remember a Rockstar game that didn't get delayed atleast once.
Good luck.
I'm deep into the xbox ecosystem and it was such a bummer that black myth was not on there. Well I'll try to access it theough steam and geforce now
