Dunkirk was an astounding movie, especially on the visual side of things: the shot where the plane was gliding over the beach was one of the best for me, showing, even though many people were saved, that the Dunkirk Evacuation was a disaster.
the only complaint I have with Dunkirk is that they didnt have NEARLY enough extras, that beach would have been absolutely filled with soldiers compared to the scattered lines, but other than that it is an amazing film
Probably the first movie that "hit hard" to me and had a deeper meaning. Its the story of a superhero that no one will ever know, and the quote "destruction is a form of creation" from Donnies book Ill always remember
Say what you will, but I love humanity. We sometimes fuck up real bad, but we have been through so much shit, and we have all these feelings about ourselves, the world, and our existence. Films are one of the beautiful ways through which we express, share, and understand these feelings.
this sounds exactly like a plague someone used to root for an asteroid or a plague bac in the day but then gradually made his peace with humanity. How do I know? well...
We really are fascinating ourselves too, about how complex our brain is, how much we advanced and became the dominant species, not to mention there were other human species too that were physically worser or better than us yet we were the one that managed to survive.
@@TeenWithACarrotIDK That's both good and bad. Your point is there, and I agree, but the good about it being driven by money is that to actually make said money they have to make the movie/show/product good. Competition makes this even better
@@TeenWithACarrotIDK Movies have always been driven in some way by money. Ironically capitalism, greed and competition is what advanced our civilization.
In my opinion, one of the greatest shots ever in cinema is the closing shot of the infamous 1971 film The Devils. It's a brilliantly disturbing film and the final shot gives me shivers every time.
1:20 while fury road wasn’t like the originals, with not a shadow of doubt, it is one of the best shot film I’ve ever watched. The storm scene and opening scene with Max next to his Interceptor are the best in the entire film
Ironically action movies are the ones that have perfected it. 😂 They're like the one genre that does't need it but John Wick, Craig era bond movies, and the last three mission impossibles after had some of the best cinematography I've seen.
@@polls. you need to watch some more movies then, not saying there isnt great cinematography in the action movies, the ones you listed are great examples. but there are many movies that have great camera work that arent action at all, its just that these movies are rarely in the spotlight and are often niche, even if they have big names in them. some end up getting alot of recognition like the lighthouse but many are doomed to be cult classics or film class movies
Jarhead is a movie which is so underrated. Probably they screwed up with a lot of sexual scenes which were sometimes useless, but other than that, the movie is a pure gem. It portrays very well the problems related to being a soldier before, during and after the war. But more Importantly,it is the most accurate media representing the First Gulf War That War could simply be described as "Hell let Loose in a Desert",and the movie does a perfect job with its cinematography. You think that the shot of guys standing inside a country-sized smoke cloud is fictional? You think that the shot of soldiers watching countless oil wells catching fire while encountering little to no enemies was unrealistic? You're wrong, because that happened and not too long ago. Definitely a top pick
Agreed completely, it's also one of the only war films I've seen that really goes in depth with the toll that being trained as killing machines has on the men involved. Great film
@@CaydenFilm absolutely. All the trauma of being treated like an object soon to be destroyed, the conflicts of killing-being killed and the isolation from social life which is the war was portrayed wonderfully in Jarhead.
I agree, it focused on an aspect of war that most war movies gloss over. I think a lot of people went in expecting more action and left disappointed, kinda like the character in the movie.
While i dont believe many of these count as "best shots" in my opinion, it is really cool to see someone else's taste and what they consider great, regardless of personal favor.
Almost every war movie I have watched has great cinematography but I think the three best are The Thin Red Line, Apokalypse Now and Come And See is maybe even the best of them.
@@Va11idus Ok, and why? I liked the cinematography, the actors, some of the dialogue, the way they showed the Japanese soldiers only half way into the movie and the setting. Also some other stuff. What did you hate about it?
If we're talking about The Dark Knight, then the shot with Batman standing among the debris after Rachel dies while firefighters are dousing the flame should be there. Also, the shot of Joker riding in the backseat of the police car.
At 1:15 the burning spitfire in Dunkirk revealed a big mistake, as the planes cowling comes off all you see is a tiny rod on which the propeller is attached, no engine, no frame, no piping etc no nothing. At first I didnt notice it as I had already been disappointed by the movies myriad issues and inaccuracies, but another friend who noticed it pointed it out and we had a good laugh about it.
@@ncch7568 lol of course not...don't be daft...they probably didn't expect the cowling to fall off while the prop was burning...now if they did expect the cowling to be exposed while the prop burned they could have put a bit more effort and made a mocked up engine. Or they might have also just probably not cared and thought most people wont notice. The entire movie had a lot of sections where cgi to remove modern buildings and structures would have helped greatly, such as the modern buildings visible for example in the English docks where you see many modern buildings including the Weymouth Sealife Tower opened 2012, and other modern buildings with green roofing and modern windows, and what about Dunkirk itself, the town was practically untouched, no sign of the battle damage from the days and weeks before, and when the Spitfire is gliding past the beach and you can make out very modern buildings, very starkly evident in the cinema. Now of course Nolan wanted to keep cgi to a minimum but it would have really helped in this film, especially with the very anemic aerial battles,(Hardy's spitfire should have run out of ammo long before fuel was even a concern) which again due to his insistence on using on real planes limited the movies ability to show actual combat maneuvers, though understandable probably due to not wanting to stress the planes and risk damage or other accidents. This is why cgi would have helped greatly, for example just even adding more planes in the background to represent the actual numbers that took part in the battle. In the movies both the beaches and the skies were very empty, in fact I find the Dunkirk scene in Atonement(2007) was much better represented.
@@wikitheory3010 ok...any hobby in particular you have in mind? At present I like reading up on the history of warfare, thoroughly enjoy firearms(though as an Indian we have limited availability, if going through legal channels, but being in Nagaland there is a very healthy black market for firearms but I am yet to go down that path) , a bit of Airsofting, gardening(fruits and vegetables only, flowers bore me). I am also a avid comic book collector, though my cut off has been at the last decade or two. Used to be a avid gamer but now am putting the gpus to better use with a bit of hobby mining.
Silhouette = good. But for real you should have included the shot from the harder they fall where the camera zooms through the entire town to reveal the main character on his horse.
Personally I think on of the best shots in cinema is the pirates of the Caribbean at worlds end as they float sideways at the end and for a few seconds it’s compete silence just a wide shot until in cuts back into the chaos
