That is Dandelion. Except they're using Dandelion's original name, Jaskier.
Yep. Jaskier means buttercup in Polish (the original novel language). The game translators chose to name him after a different flower in english, and the series translators just kept the original name.

I totally didn't even realize that was his original name, I thought Jaskier and Dandelion were different. That's great!
This is before Jaskier (Dandelion) becomes famous and rich so that's why his clothes aren't that fancy

Yen absorbed the lightning and threw it back. If you've watched all eight episodes, you can deduce the reason Tissaia kept her as well. She's never been good at control, but her relationship with Chaos is unparalleled.
@Just a Man Trying To Learn My theory is that being a crippled peasant girl from a despised racial caste who was sold into slavery to witches so she could be subjected to fatal trials might contribute to her bad attitude.
My opinion is that Yen tried to be good her whole life even though people treat her like worse than shit. But she was never afraid to fight back. As she is bought by Tissaia and taken to a place where she initially doesn’t want to go, she withdraws to a point of trying to take her own life. Seeing that that didn’t work she decides to give a chance to this magical thing she seems to have within her ( and as a result starts to get more ambitious about her own powers) but she gets frustrated when things don’t go the way she thought things were finally going, in other words, she thought she found her calling and something she was finally good at just for “nothing” to happen and again be reduced to what people used to say about her. As she is accepted , even with her problem of controlling chaos and becomes Tissaia’s student ( with Fringilla and sabrina), she is also trained to control and influence others. Magic is part of the job but not the whole job. None of them are “good” in the end, not the kind of good we are used to seeing. When watching people needing help she does help, like in episode 4 or episode 6 and 8. She does put her interests in front of others in some occasions, though she makes exceptions like it happen in episode 6. I actually love all the layers they gave this character.

For a new watcher its pretty confusing
Yennefer’s backstory is implied in the books, but never fleshed out. This is a Netflix addition.
And it's a good addition. But IMHO it doesn't make up for the cringe practical effects of Torque and the elves, the Ciri storyline (which butchered something great) and the unnecessary time jumps (which also killed a lot of it).
Yennefer's story was just briefly described in the books. Showrunners decided to interpret those basics and expand it with their vision of her becoming a wizard.
Which was a great move. This and the cast are the only things they did right IMHO. Wait, no. The Battle of Sodden Hill was wonderful. But man they killed the Ciri storyline, and the practical effects of Torque and the elves were garbage.
Yennefer's story here was mostly created for the show which is impressive since it's some of the best stuff.
There's bits and pieces in the books of it, but no coherent storyline addressing it, just hints. And I agree, it's made me care about Yennefer the way I never have from the books and games. And Anya killed it.
Jaskier is Dandelions name in the original Polish versions of the Novel. The shows creator decided to go with that instead of Dandelion for the show. No big story or reason behind it they simply preferred it.
Also because the direct translation for Jaskier is Buttercup, not Dandelion, but Dandelion was used in the translation to English so as to avoid the slightly negative connotation with the word Buttercup.
Interesting... In the Spanish subtitles they kept the Polish name for Mousesack: "Myszowór".
It threw me off a bit, but I got used to it eventually...

Admitedly Translating Myszowór makes more sence with Polish letters & .. well I get The feeling a lot of English speakers would have a problem pronouncing that name While Jaskier is simple

I love getting to see Yennefers backstory instead of just being told it by a character
only made me love her character more
It's partly invented but based on little hints and fragments in the books, in the Last Wish short story we get first hints at her past, though from Geralt perspective, later on in the books where there are whole sections, chapters with point of view of Yennefer we get some 'flashbacks' that give glimpse to her life especially in Tower of the Swallow, I'm only hoping that this expanded backstory will help in the long run when the show will finally go into full novel saga with next seasons (though I must say I was puzzled by some changes and introduced alterations and weird stuff in this show Yennefer backstory, like whole part at Aretuza).

Paul Deasy I think the author helped in the making of the show so he probably had a hand in the writing of her backstory.
Tissaia is definitely my favourite for Season1. Also the fact that she voices The Illustrious Duchess of Toussaint Anna Henrietta in the Blood & Wine DLC helps.

Love the reaction guys! And when it comes to Yennefer's backstory, it is never really ever explained in detail in the books. The showrunner said that they went through all of the books and took any passages that talked about Yennefer's past and took some liberties for it with the show. Like I remember in The Last Wish, the only real mention of it was when Geralt is eyeing her up and down the first time they meet and mentions how he could tell that she used to have a hunchback.
Yeah there are some flashbacks in later books where Yennefer gets her point of view sections (like in Tower of the Swallow/Swallow's Tower book which give some hints to her past, we also get first references in The Last Wish though from Geralt's perspective, some of the invented stuff though seemed weird in the show :) and some things despite the early set up did no receive proper closure, like whole Istredd relationship, even though they did not adapt Shard of Ice short story).
@Just a Man Trying To Learn The girls who were turned to eels were the ones who failed the tests. They were turned to eels and pushed into the water to act as conduits of magic for Aretuza. They weren't powerful enough to be sorceresses, so they were used to help power the magic. Now SPOILER ALERT here for anyone who hasn't seen episode 3 yet. But as for Fringilla and the ball, what Yennefer did wasn't intended to do Fringilla dirty on purpose, it just happened that way. The whole point of the Sorceresses in this is to train them and to have them go and advise kings of different lands. Yennefer was to be assigned Aedirn (which is where Yennefer is from). Instead the council decided to have Yennefer go to Nilfgaard instead and have Fringilla go to Aedirn. Yennefer was upset with this because it takes her away from the kingdom where she was from and also sends her to Nilfgaard, which at this time is said in the episode that the kings there enjoyed to molest there sorceress instead of heeding their advice. So after her transformation, she arrives at the ball and draws the attention of the king of Aedirn. Aedirn has always preferred to have a sorceress native to their land, so he chose to have Yennefer with him instead of Fringilla. So what she did, wasn't done with the intention of screwing over Fringilla, but it caused it none the less because she got sent to Nilfgaard instead. Though we see a lot more of Fringilla's affairs in Niflgaard later on. And I wouldn't say she is the worst by any means. It may seem that way by just what you have seen so far, but there is so much more to her then that. She can be cold and calculated but there is very much a normal, kind human side to her as well.
@Just a Man Trying To Learn Of course! It's no problem at all. I adore The Witcher series so I always enjoy being able to talk about it. And I can definitely understand the confusion. And the timeline changes don't really help either. The show does give hints but doesn't do a great job of explaining the timeline in the show. Pretty much any scene you see with Ciri, consider that to be present day. The stories with Geralt occurred a little while before Ciri was born and with Yennefer, her origin took place a couple of decades before Ciri was born. The show slowly merges those timelines as the season goes on, so that were finally on one timeline, but it could be really confusing at first.

Yennefer didn't mean "cursed" literally, she meant that her father's genes caused her twisted spine; she's figuratively cursed because it complicates her life.

The cast of this show turned out to be very good, but damn if Jaskier/Dandelion's actor wasn't a surprise show-stealer. I couldn't imagine a more perfect casting, and all of his ballads are amazing.
Would love Eric and Arron on Witcher reaction so we get a full table since its only 8 episodes 😁 but hope they get to enjoy the series as well

And also - bard's name is Jaskier. This is the original name given to this charakter by Andrzej Sapkowski in the books. Later in the games, CD Projekt Red decided to translate his name to "Dandelion" in English versions of the games (in Polish versions he's still named Jaskier).
The showrunners of the Netflix's Witcher decided to stick with the original name, so you won't hear any Dandelion name in this series, but Jaskier.
It's Jaskier in french too. I don't remember any dandelion in the Books or games. Maybe its only in the english version.
Aretuza is a female sorcery academy.
Ban Ard is a male academy.
The great councill is an overall mages management institution.
The story really aligns itself on episode 4. On rewatch you can see early clues that make you understand what is happening.

MarvelDC girl 1255643 2354 “Just a Man Trying To Learn” is an idiot, don’t bother explaining anything to him. He asked what does this have anything to do with the show, when what he asked about was literally the basis of the entire show. He’s been commenting on so many Witcher reaction videos asking idiotic questions about the plot of the story. It’s not even timeline questions, it’s just things they explain in the show, it’s ridiculous.
Dandelion is the bard, but in the show they use his original Polish name Jaskier. Jaskier translates directly to Buttercup (if I'm not mistaken), and Buttercup was changed to Dandelion for the English translations because it sounds better.
Mousesack is a druid, which is an important distinction as far as most courts employing mages (sorcerers) as advisors but Cintra refuses to.
Also there are parallels in the stories even though they're years apart. Yennefer's father died in the Great Cleansing only like 15 years ago in her timeline but by Geralt's time it had been several decades. Then by Ciri's timeline, Filavandrel had taken Geralt's advice and rebuilt and come back to take his land, which is what the kid was talking about his brother dying for against the elves.
Sabrina, Fringilla, and Yennefer are the ones who didn't get slugged.
The games changed the bards name to Dandilion, but in the books its Jaskier and thats the name they use on the show. Same character they just changed the name.
Man I love this show though. Its so good. I've watched it twice already and am rewatching the episodes before the reactions.

Yennefer wasn't lying about her elven blood. But this is mentioned in the 3d or 4th book, if I'm not mistaken. Alslo, Istredd is a character from the second book, he appeared in the chapter called "Shard of ice"

Yennefer’s elven blood is the reason the brotherhood votes to not send her to King Aiden, but instead to Nilfguard (idk how to spell these names). She then decides to fix her disfigured body. She interrupts Fringilla and Aiden at the ball and Aiden chooses Yennefer over Aiden. You know how the brotherhood found out about her elven blood? From Strehgobor, who found out from Istredd because Yennefer told him. Since Yennefer is with Aiden, Fringilla goes to Nilfguard, this leads to Nilfguard becoming powerful and invading Cintra (this is in the beginning, it is where Ciri lives). So, this basically starts the entire plot of the show.

8:37 - the guy that took off his shoes was a dwarf and like the elves, were looked down upon by humans. One plot point is that some form (pardon any spelling errors here) the Scoiatel (aka the squirrels) that would take pot shots at the humans. So yeah, the dwarf she made remove his boots snapped when the shit went down

What happened to Fringilla was basically the Law of Equivalent Exchange. You cannot transmute something without offering nothing, except if you have the philosopher's stone.
It's likely to have been said, but it is Dandelion, but they call him Jaskier which is the original Polish name I believe. It translates to buttercup which is a yellow flower, so you can see how the english translation went with Dandelion instead of Buttercup

It’s worth noting that the show is told in three separate timelines ciri’s , the witcher’s and yennefer’s. Yennefer’s timeline is way before ciri’s and the witcher’s

The girls turned into electric eels were the ones not good enough to ascend, they were conduits, meaning they could use chaos, but they didn't have enough control to become proper witches, so they got turned into batteries for the school, so they could still be useful, that's the price of failure.
Sabrina, Frigilla and Yennefer are still fine.

6:15 that is dandelion. The name Jaskier is his polish name which translated to English it’s buttercup. Do to translations to other places and they think that to girly sounding many places change the name to dandelion which later they use that name for the games.
When Renfri mentioned "the girl in the woods", I'm pretty sure she was referring to the girl from the story Geralt was telling his horse, about his first kill and how the girl who saw it was terrified of him.

I'm LOOOVING this! So, a few things to clarify: Ciri is Calathe's granddaughter; about the Sorcerers there is a competition between males vs females mages. Stregobor said to Istredd "Make Ban Ard proud" So, Ban Ard is the male school branch while Aretuza is the girl school.

The eels thing is definitely invented for the show, you know to give more drama :) in the books those who fail at magical study simply abandon magic or find other ways to live (in the prequel novel it's even stated that those 'failed mages' are taken care of by the brotherhood of sorcerers to get some position in the society, there are also cases of those individuals who get expelled from magic schools for various reasons and they can be sometimes used in secret as sort of hidden apprentices for some powerful sorcerers) there are apparently also ways to quell the wild magic talents that would make the dropout students too dangerous. The 'catching lightning in the bottle' thing is kind of referenced in the books, in Times of Contempt, Dandelion gives a little anecdote how old mage Gorazd once caught lightning in the bottle (though he also used lightning rod :)).

There were Aen Elle first. But when humans came into this world, Aen Elle used their magic and fled from this world to some others, but there were also some of them who refused and stayed here. They are called Aen Seidhe. They live longer and it's much harder for them to reproduce, so their kind is dying off slowly and it's kind of why they hate humans, comparing them to rabbits. And so much of their greatness left: they are basically old angry guys, making some fuss from time to time.

I honestly think sometimes downvotes are accidental. Cuz sometimes I go to like a video and it downvotes it instead and I notice later when I go to the video at a later time or after I finish scrolling through the comments and scrolled back up. And If I'm using my phone when a video is done and you have autoplay off and you're watching it fullscreen it gives you the option to like and dislike as well as a horizontal list of recommended videos at the end of the video and then thats where I accidently downvote when I'm actually trying to select another video. But that just might be my clumsy self. 🤣 I always correct it tho when I notice.

Yennefer was hurt she was only worth 4 marks, so she literally made 4 'marks' on her wrists when she wanted to kill herself. Seeing where she came from, I could understand how she became addicted to power in the beginning of her adulthood, at the cost of so much loneliness though.. I really like her story arc 👍
