TV Content Ratings are Irrelevant

- TV content ratings over the years have become more redundant and irrelevant, due to changing standards in content and media, as well as society as a whole and what we see as acceptable or controversial. The strict broadcast television rules have been a major obstacle for years, and the advertisers are also at fault for holding anti-censorship hostage.
Since the beginning, the TV parental guidelines have been based on American cultural standards rather than the amount of mature content featured in the programs, as you can see why almost every classic TV show is rated TV-G regardless of the content.
The more you think about this, you realize all this censorship nanny state baloney could be averted if people knew how to parent or you know, just not be Karens and ruin the fun for everyone else. You know, maybe don’t project your own views onto others? The old saying goes, “If you don’t like it, don’t watch it”. Honestly I thought we would be past this point in society by now. - ภาพยนตร์และแอนิเมชัน
there's also the issue of TV ratings changing depending on what content is in the episode, it annoys me so godamn much and is so inconstant
There's quite a few series that do it, mainly FOX adult animated shows.
That’s so bizarre that TV Ratings have changed over the years
I wonder if it will last into the streaming era
@@ArtieRaccoonReviews Hulu shows them sometimes.
Fun Fact the PG13 rating didn’t exist until the movie Gremlins came out
Basically whoever assigned the ratings was throwing darts at a board.
Yeah, that's what I conveyed here. Or sometimes they are too lazy to rate an episode, so it's just rated TV-PG-DLSV or TV-14-DLSV automatically
It’s so weird that Happy Tree Friends was only TV-14. The craziest thing is that Gundam Wing on Hulu is TV-MA!!
Not really, Happy Tree Friends wasn't that mature and rather violent gore that was made for gags and laughs. Also the animation is very bright and color and not at all realistic
@@ArtieRaccoonReviews Why is Happy Tree Friends TV-14? We seriously need to ban TV-14 for anyone under 18
I never had a problem with TV ratings. But I will admit that they have gotten irrelevant after like 2016.
we need more tv-pg shows now more then ever especially animated ones.
To be honest, the humor and writing is a lot better in TV-PG and mild TV-14 cartoons since they don't solely rely on shock humor
@@ArtieRaccoonReviews just tv-pg no tv-14
@@ArtieRaccoonReviews We need to ban TV-14 for teens
You mentioned about local affiliates and I agree they don't air risky content like they used too. They play it way too safe nowadays. I remember when they used to air shows that were TV-MA although edited like Sex and the City and South Park.
I miss when they did that
2:40 yeah I think the ESRB (the US Video Game Ratings Board) removed EC because not only was it underused but every game under said rating could be E
They discontinued the EC rating?
@@ArtieRaccoonReviews yeah a few years ago
These TV content ratings were also a problem for WWE. The Parent Television Council complained about how "inappropriate" WWE became. WWE decided to go to TV-PG because of that. It doesn't really matter though because I'm pretty sure that The Parent Television Council still thinks WWE is too inappropriate
The Parent Television council can go shove it
The PTC Has always been full of crap
I love how they have their full attention on networks and media meant for adults, but don't bat an eye at TH-cam Kids brainrot content.
Interestingly enough, the WWE sued (and beat) The PTC in court, and used that gimmick with the stable the Right to Censor.
There’s some shows that have different TV ratings over the years it’s been broadcast. Basically shows like Grim & Evil was rated TV-G (CN OD), TV-Y7 FV (Majority of the time) or TV-PG (when CP aired it once).
I also forgot to mention in the video that South Park (seasons 1-14) were originally rated TV-MA, but later re-rated to TV-14-DLSV in the mid 2010's
Cable is dying so I don't think they will ever be re-done.
In the UK, as you said these ratings actually do not appear when a show starts, however the show will have a warning before it starts if it or the episode has any content that some viewers might wanna tune away from (mostly warning children) although its usually based on what TV provider you are viewing this from. Sky will have a warning before most movies saying what rating it is.
Also Sky Cinema is pin protected?
@@ArtieRaccoonReviews For certain shows and movies they pin protect it to prevent kids from watching something that they probably shouldn't see but i don't think Sky Cinema itself is pin protected.
If Regular show keep the adult swears, I would not be able to watch due to obsessive imitating them.
Just don't do it lol
@@ArtieRaccoonReviewsoh yeah, did you know that there had been no new Checkeredpast CN City bumpers for a while?
@@ryanwilkins2233 The bumps are basically just general AS/CN ascetic bumps. We haven’t been much of them.
@@ryanwilkins2233 I mean... It's a block on adult swim and adult swim has a bunch of ways to make bumpers
@@ArtieRaccoonReviewsswears and Violets is a bad idea to initiate, and after I heard spongebob say: go F yourself, I repeated it, but now I know better of not to say F, A, B, or mostly N.
Did you know Teen Titans Go is TV-PG? There is some inappropriate content in some episodes, but most of it is like that from TV-Y7 shows. During most of the 2010’s, Cartoon Network rated most of their content TV-PG, which I do understand for Regular Show, but most other shows on the channel would of been fine with being TV-Y7. Many Cartoon Network shows from the 2000’s were TV-Y7, including The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, which is more adult than many of the TV-PG shows from the 2010’s.
I actually forgot to mention that, Cartoon Network in the 2010's wanted to target an older teen audience and stray away from the TV-Y7-FV standard they've been doing for years. From 2010 until around 2015, almost every new original was rated TV-PG.
Thank you Artie Raccoon Reviews! I started watching Regular Show last December and The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack in February.

It's hilarious how people my age prefer to watch anime on the internet instead of cable or broadcast TV. The truth is, streaming and TH-cam have completely killed off traditional TV. The only ones left watching that EI TV crap are either conservative parents who are too poor or too dim-witted to understand the internet or liberal parents who are too stingy to switch from TV to streaming and try to save money by letting the tedious TV dictate their lives. I completely agree that Cocomelon, SkidiToilet, and streaming platforms are annihilating traditional TV and cable satellite companies. We are living in the age of streaming/internet entertainment. That's why E3 is finally dead, or many gaming companies are creating their own streaming shows for upcoming games - even Taco Bell has created its own version of E3 for hardcore food fans. We are the rebel kids, and the government is the cranky old parents who are furious that we're living life like actual humans. 😅
That last part was summed up perfectly! Kind of sad that things like G4TV and E3 are dead though
@@ArtieRaccoonReviews sadly but we will move on. You should make a Mickey Mouse animated film the IP is ours of course
The ESRB ratings make sense but honestly do people still pay attention to tv ratings unless they are like TV-MA or rated r and X
Not really
First Note: TV 14 DL Shouldn't Be Used In The Big Bang Theory
TV PG Works More For The Big Bang Theory
Second Note: "TV Y7 Could Phased Out As TV PG"
At First I Thought "The Ghost & Molly McGee" and "Apple & Onion"
Should Stay Y7
But Thanks To The Regular Show Styled Humor
The Ghost & Molly McGee Should Be TV PG
Thanks To Scratch's Character Being More TV PG Humored
Thanks To Dana Snyder's Performace
And With Molly McGee Pushing Herself A TV PG Styled Character Rather Then Being TV Y Styled Energetic Character
The Same Goes With Libby Sounding Like A TV Y Styled Character When We Know Lara Jill Miller Has Voiced TV Y Character With The Same Voice In The Past
Also Andrea Davenport & Her Fandreas/Molly's Classmates/Brighton Citizens
Have Turning Red/Ruby Gilman Teenage Kraken Styled Voiced
Since Both Movies Are TV PG In The First Place
And Since Turning Red Is A Disney Film
Then "The Ghost & Molly McGee" As A Disney Series Could Be TV PG Too
Strange that CN just updated the Checkered Past ratings when they aired with the usual ones not long ago
It was done for advertising purposes
There are two movies that have been broadcast on tv in the last few years with ratings that baffle me. Especially considering what the films are actually rated. Wargames (PG) and The Martian (PG-13) have both had an MA rating whenever aired.
I never understood why on earth Beetlejuice is rated PG, despite having the F-word in one scene and Beetlejuice attempting to marry a minor toward the end of the movie.
And now MeTV Toons is becoming a reality
Yep!
3:55 that's stupid.
What's the point of even having the FCC guidelines anymore smh
No idea, it's very outdated
that's what i'm saying, the FCC really needs to update their rules
Their current standards do not match today's society norms and expectations, nor the media landscape
What is crazy is I remember when old paw patrol pre season 5 was TVY rating then season 6 ongoing it’s either TVY7 and some episodes have a no joke a TVPG rating it’s mostly in season 2 and season 3 which are the seasons rarely aired as well and it’s mostly because of multiple reasons but the 3 banned paw patrol episodes were TVPG rating before the ban
That isn't true
@@ArtieRaccoonReviews well they did change the rating to TVY7 then but their are three banned paw patrol episodes and I wish I was joking
I just realized I was thinking of paw patrol the mighty movie
0:42 expect TV-MA actually is 18 this time. What I thought was funny is how there was a blu-ray I saw where they said the censored version was TV-MA (17+), but the unedited version is "18+ only" when I've seen hard-core pornos that say "for mature audiences only" which is EXACTLY what TV-MA means
Makes sense
@ArtieRaccoonReviews actually, no, it doesn't because doesn't TV-MA already mean it's for adults? It seems whoever came up with the TV rating system didn't realize 18 was an adult and thought it was 17 this whole time, 🤦♂️
Speaking about what you’re saying about it could be aired anytime because back in the days south park will only come on at night time and now they start showing it during the day so they can air any time when they lower the rating to 14
Yep that's right, TV-14 can air any time
2:02 i'm currently building a TV station and i've been doing that to TV-Y7 rated shows before checkered past aired.

I think the ratings are important. I do see your point on getting rid of TV-Y and TV-Y7, and programs with those ratings get replaced with TV-G and TV-PG ratings since they mean the same thing. So I think they should stick around, but if something becomes dated instead of censorship, raise the rating.
2:40 i agree on your statement
Yeah, he does have a point there!
My mental health is like North Korea.
What's that supposed to mean?

hey quick question
how would you improve boomerang's current rotation for tom and jerry and looney tunes?(basically what i mean is what shorts would you add)
I have no idea
here in Australia, we have the ACB, which applies for video games, home and streaming releases of movies and TV, and live broadcast TV, the ratings are pretty easy to understand too: G, PG, M, MA15 and R18. Show ratings are up to a board and can't be re-rated unless it's resubmitted to the board. It works very similarly to the ESRB in the US, in that way.
Also here in the US, the TV rating logo will appear at the top left hand corner for the first 15 seconds of a program
Actually, Interspecies Reviewers was re-rated in both the US and Australia. It was MA in both countries, however the uncensored version was re-rated to 18+ in the United States and banned in Australia
Sometimes I don't understand why a show is rated the way they are. TV-Y is the biggest example of this as a good majority of the shows with this rating (especially older programming) tend to be noneducational, which should warrant these shows to have a TV-G rating. Rugrats having this rating in particular irritates me given the show not having too many morals and a certain character that shall not be mentioned here being an especially bad role model to very young children so I feel that TV-Y7 is a more suited rating for Rugrats (even SpongeBob couldn't escape the TV-Y snare in its older seasons).
When it comes to older ratings, the same could be said for TV-PG, some shows such as The Simpsons I understand why they have such a rating but most Cartoon Network shows (probably aside from Regular Show, Steven Universe, and maybe Adventure Time) would be better off with a TV-Y7 rating but personally for me, the ratings need to be updated, especially TV-Y and TV-G.
I really could see some non-edutainment cartoons like Rugrats, Arthur, ChalkZone, ect being rated TV-G instead of TV-Y.
Also I never understood why Uncle Grandpa and Clarence were rated TV-PG instead of TV-Y7 since they aren't that mature or inappropriate and seem like normal kids shows. However Regular Show, Adventure Time, and Steven Universe being TV-PG makes more sense due to the mature themes, intense violence, and infrequent profanity.
@@ArtieRaccoonReviews how?
Imo Ever since CN used discovery’s playout, it felt like it was going downhill from there.
I miss the old ratings bugs, I don't know why they couldn't just keep them
Well, Ivandoe was a banger (possibly because it’s made from the same company that made TAWOG.)
6:07 boy you would HATE regular show in the UK, they censored EVERYTHING because CN's target audience is lower. Half of an episode got cut (one of the halloween ones) and in the movie the scene where Mordecai's teacher dies is cut to where Rigby is holding the box.
I already know about that, international Cartoon Network affiliates completely butchered and censored Regular Show and Adventure Time. Some countries like Hungary outright banned a few episodes. Honestly they should've just aired it on TNT or E4 instead since it's a more young adult oriented cartoon.
@@ArtieRaccoonReviews the funniest thing to me though is how since gumball was made in europe they knew what the censors would attack them for so they just bypassed everything
That was pretty smart
0:37 where do you get that source

I love my TV-MA shows - especially if its anime.
Yeah, except for the ones like Brickleberry and Assy McGee which is just shocking just for the sake of being shocking with no punchline. Just childish edgy humor. Not all TV-MA shows are this way, such as South Park and Smiling Friends
@themaskedmimeartist6629 man, I love me some TV-MA anime, my profile picture is from a TV-MA show
I think PG-13 should be PG-11
I always kinda considered PG to really be PG-10 as the ESRB's equivalent is E10. PG really has no age rating though.
Your character looks kind of similar to one of my original characters that I made: Morris Raccoon, he is yellow with a brown mask and his tail is brown at the tip too.
That's interesting
