  • In this excerpt from the December 2019 episode of Ask the Vet, Dr. Gray and SmartPaker Dan answer a question about the difference between feeding alfalfa cubes and alfalfa pellets. Is one better than the other? The two discuss the factors to consider when figuring out if your horse could benefit more from the cubes or the pellets, how much you should be giving to your horse (by weight not volume!), and how to prepare them. Raise your hand if you would buy a copy of Dr. Gray’s theoretical equine cookbook!

One of my biggest questions about cubes is if they technically need to be soaked? This is just something that I’ve heard a lot of different opinions on. My barn always soaks cubes so that they don’t expand in their stomach, but I know of other barns that feed them dry instead of or in addition to hay.

Soaking cubes not hard. I do it all winter to get water in my horse as he doesn't drink all winter. Try warm water. It's not instant, but doesn't take too long.
