great video on the blasting cycle my friend ....would like to hear more details about the drill pattern used and the delays . You can solve the swinging level by lighting a match and check for any air current . Can't wait to see the milling operation and a final pour . Also wanted to see you running the eimco 12b .....keep'em coming and hope you are doing ok after all that has happened

Delays on these types of blasts are usually between .08 and 1.2 m/s between shots, they tend to be drilled in groupings of 3 for shafts less than 5 feet wide and groups of 4 if more than 5 feet wide, with one large burn hole in the middle to give the initial opening 'fracturing' blasts a place to go, then as the shots spiral out, they put in more ANFO as 'lofting' agent because this will push the rock further out of the hole.
With all of the initial fracture shots, its usually not so important to continue to fracture the outer edges, and also, additional wall and back fracturing is something they like to avoid because it can lead to caveins.
ANFO as the final shots tends to peel the rock off the walls that the fracture rounds have already broken up, so this means less concussive force into the walls and back, making the tunnel safer for the miners from then on.

Nice lift on that charge... That will really help when mucking it out, and a good reach on that scaling bar. Either you have seismic activity, or your shaft is haunted. Try hanging a plumb line on a different upright and see if it does it as well. Hang in there - Hugs and Prayers !!!

Man I love this stuff, J. It confirms what we all know, there are no slackers working in mines, some of the hardest work I have ever seen.

    • @HighlanderNorth1
      @HighlanderNorth1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

😴 Yeah, this definitely ISN'T a job for the average state road crew worker! Many of them are accustomed to work days that consist of 80% of the crew standing around smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee, while 2 guys do a little bit of work every now and then. If the job SHOULD take 6 months, they drag it out into a 4-5 year, on & off project.
That particular "work ethic" may tend to cause a mining firm to declare bankruptcy in short order!

    • @timothymilam732
      @timothymilam732 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@HighlanderNorth1 that's what's called," our tax dollars at rest!!"
Something that our whole country, and majority of the government workers from smallest towns, to those elected into the jobs that are supposed to be there working for the citizens of our country.
Yet the hours put in don't justify the lack of productivity produced on average per vast numbers of people paid to do whatever position they're there to preform daily.
Not saying that this the case for everyone, but the averages bring everyone down because of the slackers versus the few who work to the best of their abilities during their work hours.
Shame that it's become this way, but on average most wouldn't survive a week at a regular job that the majority of Americans work at daily, because they would be terminated for lack of productivity period.

As cliche as the meme is, _at 11 seconds in you had me with the word "explosives"_
I love this series and apparently so do many others! If imitation truly is a form of flattery, then you're onto something good. I've noticed a few other channels are also doing this, although Canadian Frank has been working on his for about as long, if not longer, than you all. He also runs a museum, so I think he gets top marks for that. However, I believe he is bringing his on line for public access/tours. Whereas you guys are going for the gold itself. So there will be some obviously differences between the two.
I hope things have been treating you well. You've got a lot of people sending prayers your way. And whether you believe in that stuff or not, it shouldn't really matter. I've always viewed people saying that as "I've done something to make them care about me, so I'll do my best not to let them down!"

Great video! I did some exploration geophysics with my professor dad about 30 years ago and he used Tovex water-gel explosive (it's ammonium nitrate with a high-octane fuel added) for putting a pulse of energy into the ground looking for ancient river channels for placer gold. Tovex is contained in plastic tubes, so I always imagined that's what modern ammonium nitrate explosives were - I had no idea you could just blow the stuff into the holes without a container! Learned a bunch from this one - including derailments are part of the 'fun' - good to have you back after all you've been through.

Good to see you back at the mine and making progress.
The mucker is a dangerous vehicle and very fragile in the gearbox .
The mucker in the Rammelsbergmine is every time defekt okay it is very old but only in use without any rocks or some heavy load
The space is very small to Operate the mucker and without a footrest to stand on very dangerous.
    The swinging Level is unusual
Okay a little breeze of air or the post the Level hang on vibrates or swing and that is not a good sign .
Please Touch the Post an feel if its vibrate .
But we dont want to think in a bad way it is a small breeze 😀😃🙂
Take care and in German Glück Auf
Best wishes to you and the Crew

Did the bolts cause the derailment? In the video it appears that the flange hit the bolts and was kicked off the tracks? I think round head carriage bolts then trimmed off at the nut could solve that? I would like to hear the solution 🙂

Huh, that level is kind of cool, does it always wobble like that? Someone mentioned it's rotating with the earths axis, an experiment called a foucault pendulum, but that can't be since it requires energy for the swinging object to keep moving, in museums they use a little motor to keep the pendulums swinging. I'd hazard a guess that it could be air movement but that level looks relatively heavy and would require a decent amount of air flow to get moving, even with something like a leaky duct nearby. I'd probably give it a strong nudge and see how long until it stops moving or returns to the baseline movement, just as a sort of control variable. Could possibly be an earthquake, my sisters ceiling lamp was swinging during a light earthquake in san francisco that I couldn't feel, but it would have stopped swaying fairly quickly. Something seems to be imparting a bit of energy so it swings though, that's for sure lol.

      @augiz261 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i can tell you...
Take a human, and stuff explosives with another human. It's that simple.
back then, death in the mines was normal, and in fact, people died inside the mines, more often then the cowboys shooting outside. Nobady gave shit about safety, get a hard hat, and simple instructions how to do this, get someone who already did it, guide you through it, and youre quolified expert after 2 tries.
In fact, they had no machines probobly like muckers, they just hand picked everything, another group hand sieved everything that the first group picked up, and so on... Now as you can see mining can be done with like 7-10 people... 100 years ago, they did it with haundreds.

Simple outflow of water drainage equals air moving as well as natural forces such as low and high pressure weather systems changing. I've been in a few situations where Co2 sumps are fine under high pressure weather and very dicey during low pressure events. You have air flow...

    Watching right after part 10.
The amount of dust kicked in the air from blasting dust and rock out of the drilling holes looks similar to the dustiest dry mines you've been exploring, and I bet the vacuuming process also aerosolises a good amount of ANFO - would explain the headache your mate was complaining about. If it were me I'd be wearing respiratory protection, but then I'm also smoking a cigarette right as I type this, so to each their own.
Turns out the mucker tour I wished for in my comment on your last video ended up happening in this one, so thanks!
In other channels, that oscillating level would definitely have led to a sponsored 20 minute video about how this mine is cursed and haunted, complete with pareidolia and pretending to get scared of any shadow or noise. :)
Sorry about that nasty loaded ore car derailment and axle snapping, looks rough and expensive. I guess it's part of the job/fun to have to deal with and adapt to unforeseen events like this in a mine. Can't always be enjoying yourself handling explosives and operating machines that might take your arm or leg if you're not careful!
Looking forward to your next in this series! Stay safe.

The level is moving with the wobble of the Earth in its rotation around it's axis. I learned this from an exhibit at the Oregon Museum of Natural History where they attached a plumb bob at the top of very high ceiling above a bed of sand that the plumb lightly traced the shape of the wobble in the sand, after 24 hours it made a complete 360 degree pattern around the center!

So at this point are you actually following a vein, where the rock you are blasting out contains ore, or are you extending a access tunnel to an area where bore holes show more promise for finding Gold? Will this "muck" just be dumped or actually processed? How long after the blast was the level rocking filmed? Maybe there are still reverberations in the ground from the blast, or seismic activity like others have noted?

Interesting vid , however I’d like to give you some sage advice from a 38yr professional underground hard rock miner. First off I’d ditch the old non ele caps and switch to snapdets . Non ele’s are so 1980’s and way too expensive having to purchase all those delays . Snaps are the way to go you get 15-16 different delays in one cap assembly and you can ditch the det cord too! More cost effective. Having run many a 12B and other rail muckers and installing miles of rail during my career some words of wisdom ALWAYS KEEP YOUR SLIDES CLEAN ! while mucking get that blowpipe and use it ! This saves you from derailing , allows you to see where the next tie goes ect. If you do derail keep a 3’-4’ timber handy for quick fixes it’s much easier to jump a mucker back on the track with a short timber than using a handy man jack ! You do this by wedging one end of the timber on the floor the other against the front or rear of the 12b depending upon which end derailed and driving the mucker ether forward or back it will push the mucker up high enough to get the wheels up then give her a nudge when she’s over the rail back / forward out from under the timber and she will fall into the rail . Works ever single time ! Finn hoes are a waste of time ! Too expensive and too much work ! Use a blowpipe instead. A blowpipe or “ miners broom” is simpler once you get the hang of the many uses there good for . When it come to drilling your round don’t add any more drill holes than necessary to break the rock into chunks rather than blow everything into powder! Unless your goal is to waste your time mucking ! Chunks are quick to load whereas powdered rock is not ! If your goal is 1 round per shift then disregard my last statement. Also you need to delay / time the lifters better and time them so the muck is heaved more to the right side of the drift ! This lets you muck with the step on the 12b from the get go . This might not be too big a deal since your not timbering your adit / drift .
Anyway keep giving her the onion ! Good luck and remember when someone asks you to explain mining tell them “ mining is simple your ether an inch away from a million dollars or a million inches away from a dollar” !

How is the fuel oil incorporated into the ANFO ? I ask because the stone quarry that I owned had a truck that would show up the day of the blast. This truck had the ammonium nitrate in one reservoir and as it discharged into each hole it would be blended with the fuel oil which was metered from another reservoir. We would do a shot size of 25-30,000 tons at a time. Then this was crushed and screened to make various size stone for construction. Thank you for sharing your progress.

Most of the tasting came from getting it on my hands. Wearing a respirator while loading would be miserable, I'll wear a respirator or glasses but not both!

Considering where the mine is, and the fact California is known for earthquakes, you were probably experiencing a minor one. Hundreds that are to weak to feel can happen every year, as I'm sure you know. But others may not, so yeah.
I'm curious if there was one recorded near you on that day. You can probably find it with a quick internet search. I'd do it for you but for obvious reasons you're not disclosing your location. Just type the date and location, and pretext it with _low magnitude,_ or something like that.
I used to live in a haunted house, so I know weird shit that we can't explain _Does Happen._ This isn't one of those situations. Until you walk into the mine and see someone else in there, especially since you'll know if anybody went in before you, I'm going to stick with this explanation.
But, you never know. Maybe convince them to go hang out at the Horton mine. Or leave an offering of tobacco and liquor _if_ the ghost comes back. Worse case scenario you'll have a few shots to calm your nerves as you wait in the refuge chamber! 😋

it's more than likely a harmonic in the rocks which can be caused by a high use road or highway near by(could be anywhere from 100ft to 10 miles or more depending ground composition). you won't be able to feel it physically but you'll see the movement through hanging objects. could likely hang anything on the post and it'll eventually start shifting given enough time.

      Nope.
The mooching ghosts can buy their own liquor and tobacco. Can't have any of mine!
Plus, there's nothing worse than a drunk ghost, reeking of tobacco.
      😆

so while you're looking at the level, the water is running left to right, so I'm assuming that's out... but why is your breath and the dust going right to left?

The flowing water behind the timber that the level is hanging on is causing the level to swing ever-so-slightly.

  • @Altoid777

Maybe it's the "Foucault Pendulum" effect that's causing the level to move back and forth.

We used a 12b mucker. There is a way to reduce the derailment issues with these muckers. Also guys getting squished between the wall sucks.
Its helps to put in large I-bolts in the ceilings in case you need to lift up the mucker or move it around. We also would put in tempary timber above wedged in to use to wench up our equipment if needed.

Could the mucker be given wheels with higher rims so that it doesn't jump off the track as easy?
Insense sticks produce very fine smoke that would show even slight air movement near that level. You could have been seeing a very low tier earthquake. The very tips of my palm tree fronds are fairly sensitive earthquake indicators and will show me quakes that are way too soft to feel.

It's also a better(*) explosive for moving earth as the detonation speed is slower. This gives it a heaving profile that's a bit better suited for mining. Faster ones work just as well for breaking up the rock. The slower ones can be set to push all the rock away from the face, which just makes it easier to muck up afterwards.
But, yes, ANFO is cheaper to buy, easier to use, and is by far more stable than dynamite and thus safer to handle.

your breath shows theres still an air current in the mine tween the warm and cold inside and out though slight its still there so it sets up an oscillation in the level which is hanging in that tiny air current

10:17 And the next 2 seconds show a puff of mist or a breath ( between the camera and the level) moving from right to left. I think the cause of the level moving was air flow 😉.
