- CATALYST Colloquium: Comparative examination of student and AI responses to a physics problem through the lenses of sensemaking and mechanistic reasoning (Jan. 29, 2025 at Purdue University College of Education).
CATALYST's Dr. Amogh Sirnoorkar, a Ross-Lynn Postdoctoral Research Associate in STEM education, presented the colloquium.
Abstract:
Since its introduction in 2022, ChatGPT has highlighted the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in STEM education. While many studies have focused on the accuracy of AI-generated responses in solving physics problems, effective integration of AI in education requires examining its alignment with scientific inquiry. In this talk, Dr. Sirnoorkar qualitatively compares AI and student responses to a real-world physics problem through the lenses of sensemaking and mechanistic reasoning. He also discuss the ongoing efforts to incorporate AI into physics courses at Purdue University and explore implications of the results for future research.
