I managed to get 1380 MHz full stable across 10+ games and benchmarks on the Nitro+. 1400 MHz is doable, but not fully stable across the board for some games. I see that fans ran pretty fast, above 2000 RPM's, and judging by your "loudness" portion of the video, It's pretty noticeable, just like in my case, even in a chassis.
Judging from your results it looks like it's very much on par with the 1060 at a cheaper price, it's definitely making me consider switching to AMD for decent performance at a cheaper price. Nvidia is scaring me with their prices getting more and more expensive every year
That's how you do a benchmark! You earned my subscription. Good mix of dx11, 12 and one Vulkan based game, even though there is only one, it fair to show the potential of this card in new API. I firmly believe that every reviewer needs to put DOOM in their benchmarks, since the game is closing on 1 million sold copies on steam, which is a lot more than some of the games that constantly appear in benchmarks (check steamspy for source) and it generally picked up great reviews among PC gamers as a great shooter that perfectly mixes old school with modern shooters.
Excellent video, Joker! I got the Sapphire Nitro 380 last year at about this time, and it's been an excellent card for the 200 bucks I paid for it.

None of the reviewers, as far i've seen had succesfully oc the nitro using the wattman. Asus RX480 strix on kitguru site was pushed all over to 1400 mhz with asus gpu tweak. They thinks it's possible to go higher but slider in oc tool ends at 1400 mhz. For Nitro would be best to use Trixx for OC cause it seems that custom AIB cards don't go along with wattman. Also, great review.
I'm really surprised that you couldn't OC Nitro at all.. Is it really possible that you got some bad silicon lottery or ASIC quality maybe? I saw some benchmarks with 1405MHz OC on Nitro. Other then that nice review. :)
In pcworld review they overclocked it to 1405MHz www.pcworld.com/article/3098825/components-graphics/sapphire-nitro-rx-480-review-polaris-rethought-and-refined.html?page=9, it's silicon lottery...
not silicon lottery, its bad software support. Wattman is broken on custom boards. Look at these: www.kitguru.net/components/graphic-cards/zardon/asus-rx-480-strix-gaming-oc-aura-rgb-8192mb/30/
+Rakib Hasan its the luck up the draw with pascal and polaris might hit 2150 and 1400 but more than likely 2100 and 1350-1380. But i was sad it didn't overclock and it ran hotter than i would want it to. Ive owned one sapphire card a vapor x 7970ghz and it had a great cooler on it but they have to keep cost down i guess. If i was gonna get a 480 I might go for the powercolor devil or the strix.
Why is the card throttling? That's really bad, if it cannot even reach the boost speeds on the box.... Shady as fuck too! AMD is getting to be just as bad as nvidia...
Sad to see the AMD clock wall, but greatly appreciate you sharing your results! Been waiting for these results of non-reference 480s; especially the Nitro. Had my fingers crossed, but did not expect much.
+Joker Productions it's fine. Like I said, it's a nit-pick. And I would also agree that the Nitro+ is not for mini ITX cases, it might not fit in some. say for eg the Cooler Master Elite 120 Advanced.
love your videos Joker, I really like how the card looks, not so much the performance. I've got tired waiting for the rx 480 nitro and got the gtx 1060 the day it came out, I'm pleased with it, it overclocks like a beast and the temps are really good.
I like the power connectors on the front of the card instead of the side because this way the cables won't take away from the look of the card, just looks a lot more cleanly if you ask me. :)
Thanks for the video, I have one exact same as this card pre-ordered @Amazon.com but yeah as stated by others, reference RX480 stock speeds should be included in the video as for reference. You got my like button click.
I returned my Reference RX 480 just to get the Nitro with 2x HDMI. Microsofts support for DP is awful and they don't seen to care about any of their customers issues. My monitors support DP, but Microsoft don't know how to do multi monitor set ups with them. HDMI all the way for multi monitor.
Hmmm....kind of a mixed bag on this one. The 2200RPM was loud-ish, but eTeknix were saying that it's a bug so I'll wait until Sapphire release their TriX software. OCing seemed to be pretty meh too, but I wonder if OCing the Memory and adding some Voltage adds much performance?
Thanks for reviewing these cards together. Could you tell me the quality settings used for the games that are featured in the benchmarks? And was the GTX 1060 overclocked to over 2000 MHz during the benchmarks, like you mentioned from 06:26 into the video? Thanks.
Joker, I love it how you are probably the only reviewer (alongside Bryan techyescity and adoredtv) who shows the cards in its true light - benchmarks doesnt seem to be fudged but accurately reflect what they should be and are. Nvidia shows its strength in the games its optimised for, and AMD in the more DX12 games and for the rest the cards are pretty much neck and neck. Keep up the good work!!
You didn't mention whether you left the reference model 480 fan profile stock out of box when you overclocked it...also, why would you if it was hitting those high temperatures? It's starting to look like AIB or reference doesn't matter, they all run hot, and clock to the same give or take a few mhz. If so, then I'd like someone to focus on fan noise and pitch. So far only Kyle at awesomesauce network has put any focus on the type of noise from the reference fan, and at what RPMs. I'm leaning towards the XFX reference design, as it has a backplate.
I'm actually kind of confused by this. It seems that from everything I've seen, the 1060 has a consistent and pretty big leap over the 480. But from your scores, it's very tough to justify the price difference. Was there new drivers or something? I had no idea it was going to be so neck and neck between the two
I really dont understand the lack of overclocking headroom on this card. I have seen this overclock to 1420mhz stable and beat a gaming x 1060 at 2100mhz. Anyway great video joker.
So in your opinion joker because I was holding off of reference models for the AIB one specifically this Nitro one would you say I am better off getting the reference or sticking with getting the Nitro also in case this makes a difference for decision I plan on getting a second one later for CF when i upgrade to 4k
Short Term crossfire is not the best idea. Though in the long run such as in about a year, I'd highly suggest it. Directx 12 works much better with Crossfire than DX11, and overtime. The technology will get better for Crossfire and support for it will get more stable. Though in the short term don't buy two 480's off the bat. Though if you were to get just one, then go for another in half a year or another year I'd say go for it.
wow kind of disappointed-I'd expect a tad better performance from a non reference design. Also was there a typo on the witcher 3 1440p benchmark? I feel that it should had been 45 rather than 55 considering 1080p was 57. Thanks for another great video mate!
+Queen Bitch KaNoMiko I mean no disrespect but if you think he did a bad job perhaps make your own video and try to do better-until then I wouldn't be too judgemental.
It would have been more useful to compare this card to the reference RX 480 at out of the box clocks on both cards. Of course if they're running at almost the same clocks they are going to be close in scores. I would rather know how much faster it is than the reference card at stock.
I think your mileage will vary for overclocking... already seen a review where they got 1405MHz stable for the Sapphire Nitro using a stock bios. If you really must/want to overclock then consider a custom bios. By unlocking the voltage (at your own risk!) it can be pushed to >1450MHz. Somebody already got it to pass Firestrike clocked at 1520MHz by raising the core to 1.3V.
I am planning to do a build with the fractal nano s and was wondering how much clearance you have between the power supply and a GPU, for example the nitro. Your PSU in the video is 25mm longer than the one I have and so the info would help me judge if there is enough breathing room above the PSU for any particular aftermarket cooler I consider as the shorter length will already help for longer GPU cards.
Could you do a 'living' with RX 480's in crossfire video? To see how the drivers are in crossfire, how gaming and work performance is with the new drivers, and if there are any weird problems be that hardware or software related (ie bad crossfire scaling issues, crossfire not always being enabled on boot, and crashes under heavy load, as were reported with previous crossfire setups)?
you mentioned that the card exhausts air through the back of the pcb. Did you mean like the top where the LED switch is or through the back where the 8pin connector is? I'm asking because i have an itx Thermaltake core v1 case which has a 200mm fan at the front as intake, so i'm afraid that it would push the air back to the card and cause it to throttle. I would consider a reference cooler card but i hear that they are really noisy and have some other issues...
No one is talking about the ability to change fans that easy? That is cool af (no pun intended). I had to change a fan that went bad on my XFX R9 280X and was a pain in the ass. It also opens the window to change between different custom fans in the future.
I don't like how the heat comes out the front & back & most of the exhaust is blocked out the back of the case. Not to mention no overclocking headroom. With the Visiontek RX 480 8GB, I got it up to 1407Mhz core & 2188Mhz memory on stock voltage. However the VRM gets a little toasty on the reference blower, its cooler running than any other revision when BIOS modded.
So the 8 pin uses 3 12 volt pins and 5 grounds? I was so confused when I was looking at PCI power suply cables, how does that give you more W (75W to dunno how much more)
...I just ordered one of these: Sapphire Radeon RX 480 (11260-01-20G) 8192MB PCIe x16 replacing my R9 380 which did me well - i don't have the largest of cases and hopefully ive measured my cavity dimensions correctly. With the 1 x 8 pin power connector on the end of the newer card it will be very close...i have just about 11 5/8in to the HHD's. Fingers crossed ;) Thanks kindly for the review (y)
No Joker, it's the voltage that holding these graphics card back. With unlocked bioses the RX480 wiil do 1400ish. overclocking.guide/download/amd-radeon-rx-480-unlocked-air-bios/
Hey Joker, I am curious why it matters concerning the outputs? Every benchmark test I have ever seen shows nearly no difference between display port/dvi/hdmi as they are all digital signals with hdmi giving a couple thousands of a frame rate slower probably due to carrying the audio as well but its literally only thousandths of a difference in fps. Do your monitors not have HDMI?
Thanks for the review. Think I'm going to wait and see what the Strix card can do before I decide which to jump on just yet. Seems like the cooling may be a bit better on the Asus offering from the look of it.
I purchased this card. Thanks for the information. I wanted to learn as much as I could about this card. Question, when do you push the button to set it at factory speed? Do you do it during boot, or can you just push it anytime? The game Doom crashes my computer when changing levels or saving. The only way I can get it to not crash my machine to a shut down crash is to set the resolution to 720. What do you think about this? Should I try to factory clock this card?
I got mine the other day and am very pleased with it. I would have got a 1060 but like the idea that I can crossfire another 480 in a year or so if I want to.
Joker, have Sapphire left the VRM on the left hand side of the PCB closer to the I/O as per reference or switched them to the right hand side of the PCB? Trying to tell if I can get a Kraken G10 on one.
hey joker, i know this comment is kinda late but I just bought an RX 470 Nitro+ from sapphire and the only way to toggle between LED modes is the physical button on the card. I did try the software "TriXX" which said I should be able but nothing happens. Can't even add anything. Read somewhere that crimson drivers make other softwares no use. Have u managed to fix LED software control already?
I guess the tested Nitro OC 480 is the 4GB and that's why in most games it is alongside the 8GB reference one. Firestrike lower result confirms that also.
People said the fans were noisey on sapphire RX480 I can't hear a thing when I put it under Kombuster (heavy load)...maybe they changed the fans I don't know........I want to get another one £240 in UK..for crossfire Mine doesen't even reach 80cel even with 4 Kombuster's running and it stays at 75C. I recon they updated it since this video.
Strygger Yea the average person would finesse the Gigabyte version since they don't want to unscrew their GPU, they would rather get the Sapphire Nitro that's a lot more cooler and better.
that back plate is beautiful!
Yes!!!
that is the reason why I hesitate between this card and the Red Devil RX 480
Bravo! Very solid video; super thorough.
What's really good!
hey, seed, gonna do any rx 480/gtx1060 reviews?
I managed to get 1380 MHz full stable across 10+ games and benchmarks on the Nitro+. 1400 MHz is doable, but not fully stable across the board for some games. I ordered my Nitro+ off Amazon for 270USD, do you like the card?
+Bryan G. When did you get your card because I pre-ordered and I'm still waiting.
atl richard77 I canceled my order for a reference card. :/
Bryan G. This sucks
+Dysphoricsmile 1). About every card was sold out on release this year. 2).You went above and beyond with your reply...
that removable fan is awesome, hope sapphire would release a higher rpm version for that as an option
Judging from your results it looks like it's very much on par with the 1060 at a cheaper price, it's definitely making me consider switching to AMD for decent performance at a cheaper price. Nvidia is scaring me with their prices getting more and more expensive every year
260$ with a backplate and led's
wow nice sapphire good price on this card i feel
+The HateMate Yeah ikr... sucks :/
320€ here. not gonna pay so much money for a 'mainstream' card.
It's not $260... The OC 8gb version is $280!
+freshstyIe the difference in price is just stupid, 200$ there and about 350$ here in Europe...
The 4gb is 259 though
That's how you do a benchmark! You earned my subscription. Good mix of dx11, 12 and one Vulkan based game, even though there is only one, it fair to show the potential of this card in new API.

Great, thorough review. Appreciated the heads up about potential mITX cooling differences, thanks!
I do like the production effort +Joker puts in his videos:) Slick

1fps damn dude
Did you overclock the memory too?
The memory clocks on the 480 are more dynamic than the core clocks.
Anyway, great analysis! Thumbs up!
wtf why is it getting lower frames than the RX 480?
watch the video and find out he says it in there
Most of the games tested are more tuned for AMD
The reference RX480 used is overclocked to 1350MHz so slightly faster than the stock Nitro.
Why is the card throttling? That's really bad, if it cannot even reach the boost speeds on the box....
Shady as fuck too!
AMD is getting to be just as bad as nvidia...
it's chilling at around 1342 mhz and the rx 480 overclocked is around 1350mhz
Sad to see the AMD clock wall, but greatly appreciate you sharing your results! Been waiting for these results of non-reference 480s; especially the Nitro. Had my fingers crossed, but did not expect much.
Somewhat of a missed opportunity not showing stock numbers of the reference XFX RX 480, though at this stage a minor nit-pick. Thanks.
+Joker Productions it's fine. Like I said, it's a nit-pick.
And I would also agree that the Nitro+ is not for mini ITX cases, it might not fit in some. say for eg the Cooler Master Elite 120 Advanced.

you just earned yourself another sub and loyal viewer
***** just wondering, did you order this off amazon? If so, how long do they take to stock the card and ship?
Definitely looking at getting one of these for my system after my 7970's HDMI ports suddenly crapped out on me, after 4 years of heavy usage though.
I'm glad i bought the reference rx 480. I've got a mini itx so the better cooling won't work and the benchmarks are too similar.
Really good video Joker, I like your B-Roll a lot.
Thanks for the video, I have one exact same as this card pre-ordered @Amazon.com but yeah as stated by others, reference RX480 stock speeds should be included in the video as for reference. You got my like button click.
Heck yeah! Good job on this review bro, you are going to get to 100k subscribers soon if you keep this work up.
I returned my Reference RX 480 just to get the Nitro with 2x HDMI. Microsofts support for DP is awful and they don't seen to care about any of their customers issues. My monitors support DP, but Microsoft don't know how to do multi monitor set ups with them. HDMI all the way for multi monitor.

please consider display port is still not widely used at the price point this card is intended. not everyone uses 3 display port monitors.
musis is AMAZING joker...good job on the review!
thumbs up
Thanks for reviewing these cards together.
Could you tell me the quality settings used for the games that are featured in the benchmarks?
And was the GTX 1060 overclocked to over 2000 MHz during the benchmarks, like you mentioned from 06:26 into the video?

When is the NITRO being released
Joker, I love it how you are probably the only reviewer (alongside Bryan techyescity and adoredtv) who shows the cards in its true light - benchmarks doesnt seem to be fudged but accurately reflect what they should be and are. Nvidia shows its strength in the games its optimised for, and AMD in the more DX12 games and for the rest the cards are pretty much neck and neck. Keep up the good work!!
So, if I were to get this card, I'd be going from a Geforce GTX 650 Ti. Would this be worth a $200 upgrade?
Going from a 650 myself
Andrew Brunette
Nice! I'm buying mine tomorrow.
I love the plug in the rear, looks better if case has window.
Any general ideas on a release date? Probably going to hold off for the Nitro+
I think the port selection is spot on on that price range most users will be using 1080p monitors which have dvi or hdmi

Great video as always! Quality!
Pretty sure the 2 hdmi ports are geared towards VR users, to simultaneously connect headset and monitor.
great video... in my humble opinion the only thing missing was a graph with temps...
hi i want to buy the RX 480 reference model so how you overclocked it?
It would have been more useful to compare this card to the reference RX 480 at out of the box clocks on both cards. Of course if they're running at almost the same clocks they are going to be close in scores. I would rather know how much faster it is than the reference card at stock.
Salut,
Trés bonne vidéo. Ton descriptif m'a fait choisir cette carte graphique qui me satisfait pleinement. Super !
Somebody already got it to pass Firestrike clocked at 1520MHz by raising the core to 1.3V.
can you link the review? thanks.
the review was really good joker dont let fanboys of any company get to you keep it up :D

You didn't try that bios that can unlock the voltage? Some guy did it and he went over 1400mhz with the reference cooler
Hey Joker was the 1060 OC'd in these benchmarks?
thank you joker for the great video very helpful. just what i was looking for benchmarks with out game works
The new power connector position looks much nicer and 2 HDMIs is a must for VR. Great card for sure.
Like the look of this card, waiting until it's back in stock again.
i think the 2 hdmis were for better VR support, which some may or may not appreciate
The direction of spin on the fans which is shown here indicates that this isn't a blower but a puller though am I seeing this wrong?
Did you try adjusting the memory clocks? Was the overclocked reference still at 2000Mhz mem clock too?
No Joker, it's the voltage that holding these graphics card back. With unlocked bioses the RX480 wiil do 1400ish.

Hei guys, what's the name of song on the benchmark 7:25 part?
Hey Joker, I am curious why it matters concerning the outputs? Another amazing unbiased review yet again great job Joker that 480 card you have is a beast for the price amazing performance.
Thanks for the review. Think I'm going to wait and see what the Strix card can do before I decide which to jump on just yet. Seems like the cooling may be a bit better on the Asus offering from the look of it.
Very very useful video...nice job mate.
When does this card start throttling? Is 75c dangerous? As in how much will it effect the longevity or life span?
Watman overvoltage wont stick use other OC tools like sapphire trixx(can give up to +200mV) or Msi afterburner.
Should I try to factory clock this card?
i wonder what would undervolting would increase some performance
I'm glad that you tested the gpu temperatures under load, but why did you test them on OVERWATCH ?
My fans of the same card sound like a plane
awesome. one detail is missing though. real world power consumption of this card. any test numbers on that?
I got mine the other day and am very pleased with it. I would have got a 1060 but like the idea that I can crossfire another 480 in a year or so if I want to.
So you're saying I should actually go with the reference card for my ITX build?
I got the feeling these benchmarks are off, no way an aftermarket card runs slower than the reference rx 480 in almost all these benchmarks..
The Witcher 3 results are quite impressive. I wasn't expecting to see those numbers, specially at 1440p.
the Raiders are now called the Rai_ers because they forgot the "d" in the first two games...
epic review. im surprised 480s r so similar to 1060. initial 1060 reviews seem to be deceiving
Very unbiased reviewing. Sub'd.
OH Shit! Your a Raiders Fan! Damn we're family now Joker! #raidernation!
the cooler looks amazing, are you planning on building another rig for this year ?
7:15 what are the headphones that you are using?
great sound track as usual \m/
Did you increase the power limit when you were overclocking? I've heard that the nitro doesn't OC well without a slight bump on that.
***** Thanks for replying.
thanq for this awesome video.. now im in love with this card
I guess the tested Nitro OC 480 is the 4GB and that's why in most games it is alongside the 8GB reference one. Firestrike lower result confirms that also.
hej joker. did you use the standard fan profile??? was it disturbing loud? hit 75 degrees at 2400 rpm?
People said the fans were noisey on sapphire RX480 I can't hear a thing when I put it under Kombuster (heavy load)...maybe they changed the fans I don't know........I want to get another one £240 in UK..for crossfire
Mine doesen't even reach 80cel even with 4 Kombuster's running and it stays at 75C.
I recon they updated it since this video.
Joker what's the name of the guitar solo during the benchmarks? That shit was dope
I recently brought this card and was worried that it was getting too hot at 70 - 80c, however after watching this my mind is at rest, thanks!
Coding With Andrew OCed? Or stock out of the box. I was like yea if I didn't get the 1060 I'd no nitro since the gigabyte on gets like 88C.
the most I have ever seen it was 70c, however that was a long game sesh with all the bells and whistles turned up to ultra
Coding With Andrew Run furmark.
Gigabyte has some really sloppy thermal paste, try to reapply it yourself.
Strygger Yea the average person would finesse the Gigabyte version since they don't want to unscrew their GPU, they would rather get the Sapphire Nitro that's a lot more cooler and better.
We will see in Battlefield 1 whether that Primitive Discard Accelerator can stretch it's legs
I'm interested in some 4gb 480 vs a $250 1060 comparisons. All I'm seeing are the 8gb.
hmmmm torn between this card and the gtx 1060 strix suggestions?
