There is a large expat community in the 30min area around Scalea, Diamante, Praia a Mare, San Nicholas Archella, Belvedere Maritimo (Collectively the Riviera dei Cedri). We drove from Puglia through Basilicate to arrive like you in Paris a Mare, and we thought that was the most amazing drive ever with super views and the big aha moment when you come out of the last tunnel. I have not driven it in the winter, nor would I want to. But Amalfi or any of the coastal areas have the same windy roads, and any mountains have snow in winter. Once you are at the coast, what makes the greater Scalea area so special is that there is a strip of flat land between the mountains and the sea. So unlike Amalfi you can ride a bike and walk, with the sea to your right and the mountains to your left. Amazing! And there is a great very active expat community. Scalea has now a fast train connection to Rome (3hrs) so you do not need to drive in the winter.
Yes it's fabulous. I am looking at Belvedere as well. I will be back. I will have to decidewhere I am moving at some point after I sell my US property. Keep in touch Jen.
I missed its beauty because of the storm, rain and heavy fog. I bet it's magnificent on a sunny day or in the fog if one is staying by the lake.@@OurUnspoiledItaly
We have driven that road in the rain, fog and also in the dark. Che bellissimo! The secret is to just go slow and enjoy. A fast train from Roma via Napoli stops in Scalea. Grazie mille per questo video.
We have friends in Milan who take a 7 1/2 hour train ride to Scalea so it is not difficult to get to Scalea via the train system at all. From Naples, it is just under three hours.
Scalea is a nice town. There is a big expat community here. I usually fly into FCO and take the train to Scalea. You can rent a car in Scalea (a block from Vularie Siciliane). I flew out of SUF last November to check it out - SUF to FCO to LAX via Ita Airways. It is a small airport and all the gates are in the same big room. The train ride from Scalea to Lamezia Terme is about 1.5 hours. Love Italia and go often. Very nice video :).
i see that...one does not know when one is exploring but the details make it very clear now...I am in Tropea have you been down here? AWESOME. I will go back to Scalea on Dec 26 to New Years... Happy Holidays. Do you have a house in Scalea or just visit? Gina
@@myitaliantherapyginafiore4414 Hi Gina, how was the new year in Scalea? I have been looking to buy in Scalea for about 2 years now- was there in January 2024 and made an offer on a Iittle place near the train station but they did not accept my offer. Oh well. I have been to Tropea about 6 or 7 years ago. I plan to be back in September for the Peperoncino Festival in Diamante. If you're around, we should grab un cafe e cornetto. Lynn
Hi Lynn, Oh how lovely you have been there. There will be another Property. I loved Scalea in the winter. I spent 10 days in Tropea and loved that too. Not sure when I will be back but keep in touch. Good luck to you my friend on your future purchase. So many places so little time LOL Gina in Upstate NY@@lvc23
You have a place in Ravello? I love Ravello. Yeah this time just blazed through Amalfi Coast only drove through because I could. Yes very hearty Americans south of Salerno I must say. Crazy gorgeous though. I am in Tropea have you been here? Happy HOlidays friend
Oh yes Ravello. There are more places to see in Italy one cannot see them in a lifetime. This trip I drove all along all the coasts of Calabria and Puglia and across> I did go to Matera and then back to Naples onto Portugal again. It was a magnificent 2 months. I still have a few more videos to add to Tropea as well as Scalea. I spent 5 days in Scalea and 10 days in Tropea and in between. @@OurUnspoiledItaly
Ciao Gina! I just discovered your channel. It's very interesting! We took that road in all seasons, and we love it. But like most travelers, we always take a train from Rome to Scalea. By the way, we have a whole channel about our life in Scalea. :)
My Scalea ❤️
Thank you
