@ 23:00 WHY AREN'T YOU GUYS USING THE BATRANG!!! It's batrang, then gun, then fists if/when they run out!!! P.s. Try farming the last blender dropper for items, before the final fights. If kneeling and punching them,as they drop, doesn't work. Try throwing batrangs, one at a time per blender, then jump across and back to gather drop items. Then going into the battle with full everything. Kinda' think that's why they put it there.
I don't know if there's a single video on TH-cam that so accurately captures the feelings involved in playing a hard video-game as this one does. You can tell how beleaguered they are, but they just have to keep going. Watching them get better and better at the level is so satisfying (with bouts of frustrated sloppiness in between; passing it back and forth to stay calm, etc.). Anyone who's stuck out a hard NES game can relate. All for the intense joy of getting to watch a crappy cutscenes that confirms you beat it. "I was trying to pretend he really killed my parents" slays me. It's so absurd, and such a sincere kind of thought in that kind of situation.
The reason they mapped pause to select and weapons to start is so that you can switch weapons on-the-fly while still moving, otherwise you'd have to take your thumb off the D-Pad to switch weapons. That was freaking intense though and awesome to see James finally beat the Joker! My strategy has always been to use batarangs so you can stand between the lightning just outside of punching range, but the trick there is you can't just mash the fire button, you have to use a slightly slower rhythm so that you don't hit the projectile limit and can keep the Joker flashing for when he runs past you.
Never played this one, but I did play a few bad ones on SEGA, PlayStation, and SNES. I personally like Arkham Asylum it was everything I wanted in a Batman game, great story, fluid controls and dynamics, gadgets and all the other bat-quiptment. Now the only thing it was missing was the Batmobile but, with the newest game that will be rectified, and maybe become my newest favorite batman game.
Smartfunnyandlazy These newest batman games are awesome no doubt, but what ruins them for me is the art.Batman is too tall and muscular he looks like brock lesnar
Smartfunnyandlazy You probably played Batman Forever and Batman and Robin. Batman Returns is quite good on both NES and SNES and the games based on Batman: the Animated Series are also worth a look.
24:04 Mike: "Let's appreciate the ending" Truer words have never been spoken. Congrats to both of you. James may have been holding the controller, but it was a definitely a team effort.
That was one of the coolest things I've seen in some time. Many of us have been there-- marathon sessions, either alone or switching off with friends, making progress until you reach just before the end. Then it was a battle of will as you would get knocked down repeatedly by the end boss and have to keep working your way back. Victory was all the more sweet if/when you saw the game through and finally took down whomever stood in your way-- The Joker, The Jacquio, Bowser, Dr. Wily, Dracula, or any of the other familiar foils. You (and your friends) felt like you had really accomplished something. This two-part series encapsulates those memories and actually helps me to relive them. My buddy Kevin & I did this same Batman run 25 years ago, so this was extra-sweet for me. Can't wait to see what is next!
That was legitimately awesome! The look on James' face when he beat The Joker was a look of pure elation. And of course, the post-victory one-liner was priceless. Heh.
Sometimes I wonder if the reason that early NES games difficulty was insanely high back in the day was for lack of game design experience from the developers. Game designers today have a better grasp of balancing their game due to years and years of learning. But I'm not so sure about back then.
It was actually more about the limited capacity and depth of games at the time. They couldn't make 99% of the games all that long, so they cranked up the difficulty like crazy so you'd get your money's worth, so to speak. Your typical action-platformer game of the era had maybe 6-20 stages at the most? If they weren't INSANELY DIFFICULT, then you could beat each game the same day you bought it, which would suck when you just plopped down $30 for a new game.
Joker had already killed Bob by this point, but of course, the game constantly strays from the movie. It could also be the big guy that beats up Batman in the bell tower.
lol i love mike for saying "lets appreciate the ending" a true classic gamer! the souls games have been the only games to recreate the feeling james got after beating the joker! would love mike and/or james to do a walkthrough of a souls game.
I just think it's really admirable of Batman to overcome his height disadvantage to battle Gotham's underworld. Guy's gotta be, what... four foot two or something? Incidentally, yeah, this playthrough had me on pins and needles. Kudos to you guys for seeing it through! It's an inspiration to those of us who go mad with rage having to endure Batman game gauntlets again and again on our own. I'm tempted to think that whoever was in charge of trophies tried to make an homage to these old grueling NES games when they decided how to wrap up the last Arkham Knight DLC pack.
I don't know why , I don't usually do this . But when he said "A chapter of my life just ended" , It gave me mixed emotions and a lot of thoughts came to me and I teared up. James &Mike you guys have been a big part of my life ever since you started . I love you guys.
+Chris kv You're not alone Bro. I had the same thought. Came out of nowhere. Like, "Damn, we're finally doing it. Married, parents, and we are still going after that boss." :')
I think the thought of being a married parent is tear inducing... But I also agree with the emotion attached to these guys and the games. I feel like Mike and James are my friends.
@@badnewsbruner I also feel the same, these guys are awesome. They are the kind of people I would really like to be friends with. I completed Castlevania 3 on nes more than 7 years ago. The phrase of "a chapter of my life has ended" really resonates with me as well.
The weapon change is on START so you're able to press it with your right hand. This way you can keep on controlling the character with the left hand while changing the weapon.
This is what I like to see out of the 'James & Mike Mondays' series. Honest and intense play-through of classic video games. I feel it's a bigger draw than just doing an overview of a game. While not officially apart of this series, the Super C playthrough is my favorite video of you two playing a game.
Nice job guys, that game is hard as hell! I could really feel the intensity in the room. Makes it all worth it in the end to be able to beat the Joker.
The good old days when games were super hard and stressful, and the person your hanging out with is getting so pissed off you nervously don't know what to say or if you can laugh.
You have accomplished the mission. You are the very prevailer that protect right and justice. I would express my sincere, Thanks to you. Take good rest! General Kawasaki
This is why I love James and Mike. Their reaction at the end is priceless and reminds me of when I beat games from my childhood that I just couldn't back in the day.
The "Love that Joker" commercial part is one of my favourite moments from the film right up there with when the Joker broke the fourth wall when he interrupted the Mayor's press conference when he announced he was giving the money away at the festival.
This is why music matters. If the game gets to hard, you keep on playing. I must say the game looks really good for a NES game, it has some Megaman vibe. Never played or heard from this game.
Loved this two part episode! You guys really take me back to the past, passing the controller to my best friend and then giving the hard level a try again until one of us finally beat it. I wish I still had someone to play classic games with.
THIS is what gaming was all about. Siting on the couch with some friends playing a game. Passing the control around while trying to figure out strategies to beat hard ass levels and bosses. Awesome episodes guys, thanks for sharing!
I can't believe I managed to beat that game when I was a kid. No friends who could give me tips, no help from Nintendo power..... just a Nintendo controller, nerves of steel and my mitts. Mike, I felt the same way about Zelda, Metroid and Mario. I had an Atari before that and I played it but it was those titles that made me really love video games.
***** I don't think I've ever been stubborn. There's just certain games I was able to get through but when I look back at how tough they were I'm not sure how I did it.
I think having the weapons on the start button is actually a good idea since it allows you to cycle your weapons while moving. If it was on select you'd have to stretch your right thumb to reach it, or stop moving and use your left thumb.
Wow! What an epic ending to an episode. He beat the entire game! Good! I remember playing "Batman" for the NES when I was a youngster, and I've never got passed to the final battle with the Joker. My brother used to played that game and he had never got passed to the final boss and never beat the Joker. This is probably one of the best movie based game for the NES. Sunsoft did a great job with this one, an absolute classic from start to finish. The music was good than any other game that other companies like Konami put out. And best of all, I still have this game in my collection. Sunsoft made other games like "Blaster Master", an arcade port of "Spy Hunter", "Journey to Silius", "Fester's Quest" and many other great Sunsoft games. Many of them are good and some are bad. There was also a sequel to this one called "Batman: Return of the Joker" which was a pretty good game and it does have a password to continue your game to the final battle with the Joker. "Batman Returns" was also a third NES game based off the 2nd film and that game was made by Konami, not Sunsoft. If you a fan of "Batman", this is the game you'll ever get to play.
Love watchin dudes in there late 20s and early 30s play games they played as a child and get psyched when they almost beat it! Kinda like vanishing a childhood challenge! Keep makin episodes guys!
These videos bring back so many memories. I remember when reaching the end of a game or the final boss was a HUGE DEAL, something rare, and if you beat games like this or Megaman 2 or Mario 3, etc., then you were the Big Man on the playground, as far as other kids were concerned.
Nawres Alsaleem I beat Ninja Gaiden in under a month playing it casually without save states, glitches or guides. It's hard but it lets you skip the bosses you've already killed like in this Batman game and if you get the flame power-up and defend by clinging onto walls it's definitely possible.
justaguy500 O I'm not saying it's not possible, my comment was just a reference to the AVGN episode with that Ninja Gayden guy failing to complete the game too.
9:12 _"Hold on, I'm seeing into the future."_ At that point, I grinned and shifted my focus over to Mike, then he grins while looking into the camera. Guess that was a collective *"WTF James?!"* moment all around. lol
The feeling of struggling with a hard challenge in an old school game and then finally beating it. An awesome feeling indeed that I'm all too familiar with.
Gotta love, how James @19:33 just looks so done 😆. I can relate, though. This is a really relatable video; and I actually feel like I’m there, playing with them.
LOL "Your Mother!" what a reaction lol that was something else :-D congrats on beating the game, brang back to me memories of beating super mario world as a kid for some reason.... ahh good times :-)
Anyone who has played games from the 8 and 16-Bit eras is very familiar with the emotions shown in this video. The rage, the tension, the accusations that the game is unfair and of course the joy when it all goes right! My friends and I spent many a weekend when I was growing up, playing through tough games with those same emotions. That's what makes a retro gaming so great.
This is one of my favorite NES games to date along with SMB3, LOZ, Blaster Master, Fester's Quest, and MegaMan. I have beat the Joker once when i was 10 years old after weeks of playing everyday after school. Glad to see you guys replay this one, Enjoyed every minute of this crazy "NES HARD" type of game.
The Epiphany mike has at 11:46 is what video games is all about that realization of puzzle or problem solving that carries into your life years beyond the game.
The NES victory cry at the end was great! Everybody who played the NES back in the 80s was guilty of doing that when they beat a hard ass game! This episode was awesome. =D
You guys rock! This is my favorite collab video of you too, the joking around and teaching each other techniques as you okay, even the one minded 'bullshit' you guys did was cool, lol loved the way like is like wtf James? A lot lol especially at the future part, wish I had a fellow gamer to be like that with, you guys are awesome AVGN 4lyf lol
Every other time the camera pans back to Mike and James, you can see Mike cracking up. I used to do that when I would watch my cousin play Mega Man X. Of course, my cousin would eventually whip the controller at the T.V. and start screaming.
This playthrough you guys did is my favorite James & Mike Mondays for sure. I love when you guys play through to the end of a difficult game, and this playthrough convinced me to finally beat this one myself!
We all felt your pain playing through this game. So awesome, so challenging and so frustrating as well. It's emotionally draining playing through it. As a viewer though your refusal to farm life/items on that last thing that drops the killer claws is beyond frustrating....lol congrats on beating the Joker, James. Fun to watch you close a chapter in your life

i like how you've worded that..
"Your Mother!" Best reaction to a Joker kill.
Best moment:
"I guess let's just see what he does."
*kills Batman instantly*
"That's what he does."
Let's Get Nuts.

Technically you could still do that. Select is possible to press with your right hand. But yeah, sometimes I wish Super Metroid worked this way.
Yeah but super metroid you can remap the buttons.
Does anyone notice, When Batman dies, he vanishes in the form of the bat symbol.
That's awesome imo.
why?
Because
Love this episode, reminds me of my brother and me back in the day playing this game. strategizing, planning, focusing.... awesome video

That's what makes a retro gaming so great.
ocarina of time master quest play through XD
fucking cows inside jabu jabu
This is one of my favorite NES games to date along with SMB3, LOZ, Blaster Master, Fester's Quest, and MegaMan.
I have beat the Joker once when i was 10 years old after weeks of playing everyday after school. Glad to see you guys replay this one, Enjoyed every minute of this crazy "NES HARD" type of game.
Lol good shit this was intense!
This is one of the best videos on TH-cam as far I'm concerned. Reliving my childhood frustrations.
man I'm stressed just watching!!!!
The Epiphany mike has at 11:46 is what video games is all about that realization of puzzle or problem solving that carries into your life years beyond the game.
This was so entertaining that it could have been the AVGN movie and I would have been satisfied haha
Mike, you just described my whole childhood: video games and the skating rink. Those were good times.
that was great, even with 10 mins left on the video it was tense even though i knew you wouldnt beat him untill maybe the end
The NES victory cry at the end was great! Everybody who played the NES back in the 80s was guilty of doing that when they beat a hard ass game! This episode was awesome. =D
My god That was intense, well played james
LOL 3:25 James clears his throat for Mike then just stares at the camera. I find that humorous!
You guys rock! This is my favorite collab video of you too, the joking around and teaching each other techniques as you okay, even the one minded 'bullshit' you guys did was cool, lol loved the way like is like wtf James? A lot lol especially at the future part, wish I had a fellow gamer to be like that with, you guys are awesome AVGN 4lyf lol
liked these 2 parter episodes. much more fun seeing you guys playing through an entire game rather than just play some obscure one for 5minutes
To replay the (Nintendo) Zelda series is a great idea!
Every other time the camera pans back to Mike and James, you can see Mike cracking up. I used to do that when I would watch my cousin play Mega Man X. Of course, my cousin would eventually whip the controller at the T.V. and start screaming.
WTF when did the joker become thor, it was weird enough that he had an army of robots
This playthrough you guys did is my favorite James & Mike Mondays for sure. I love when you guys play through to the end of a difficult game, and this playthrough convinced me to finally beat this one myself!
The Worst part about the Joker boss is that he doesn't have a health bar.
Mike is an awesome gaming partner - he's always upbeat and supportive :D what a legend.
Is the audio on this low? I have my volume all the way up, and its barely loud at all.... but I hear the fuzz as if the speakers are loud as shit.
You're not alone. The video volume is lower than normal.
Yeah, I'm hearing some "fuzz" noise too.
You’re supposed to use the walls to beat the final bosses, Batbrains!
Epic victory James !!!!!!
