- Ozlem Goker-Alpan, MD, Founder and Chief Medical Officer of the Lysosomal & Rare Disorders Research & Treatment Center (LDRTC), discusses her work in lysosomal storage diseases and the GRIDS conference.
Lysosomal diseases are a group of rare inherited metabolic diseases characterized by an abnormal build-up of various toxic materials in the body’s cells as a result of enzyme deficiencies.
Celebrating its tenth year, the GRIDS conference is a meeting focused on collaboration with attendees from all over the world. With hopes that this collaboration will lead to new ideas about drug development and the pathophysiology of rare lysosomal disorders, the meeting involves presentations from industry leaders and network opportunities.
At the end of the conference, medical professionals are invited to the GRIDS clinic where select patients with challenging cases have the opportunity to network, ask questions, and formulate ideas.
The LDRTC’s mission is to produce equity in knowledge and dissemination. Dr. Goker-Alpan’s clinic operates with no appointment end times so that patients may get all the information and testing that they may need without the restraint of typical clinical environments. This allows for a comprehensive work up and treatment plan to be established.
