- The next round of municipal elections will be drastically different in Alberta, as Premier Danielle Smith's UCP government opens the door for local political parties. Is the move good or bad for everyday Albertans? We ask Alberta Municipalities president Tyler Gandam and past presidents Lisa Holmes and Cathy Heron.

The surveys results from the provincial government’s local elections survey were sent to Matthew Black at the Edmonton Journal after a freedom of information request.
Over 70% of Albertans do not agree with allowing political parties in municipal politics.
This is not a surprise. These results align with the results from a Janet Brown survey commissioned by Alberta Municipalities in the fall that showed 68% of Albertans would prefer to see municipal candidates run as individuals.
It is a great idea, you dont have to wait until after an election to find out which way the politician leans on money policies etc.
Heard Rachel Notley was moving into Edmonton and running for Mayor it pays way more then being Premier about $25,000.00 more I believe, all voted in by Edmonton and Calgarys great Mayors and councilor's.
Rachel Notley has and does live in Edmonton for most of her life.
Party politics is purely toxic, but we already have party politics on the left. All the unions and public sector workers and all the "clients" of "free stuff for me" handouts vote for more free stuff and the people who promise (not necessarily deliver) that. A balance of some cut spending or some do it for yourself and have less government would be a breath of fresh air in the tax & spend and go into ridiculous debt civic realm. Admin asks for 8.2% increase and council awards 8.4%? We need a voice against these fools. Civic politics should be about who fixed the potholes quickest and cheapest. Social services and health and welfare is the job of a different government.

Where are you getting your numbers from I personally think it a great idea If your voting for a candidate you want that person to represent your values on how they spend my tax dollars
As we know that the conservative Premiers don't spend tax dollars for the best interest on constituents.
There is no such thing as fiscal Conservatives in Canadian politics anymore. That started to happen in the 1980s, and it was no longer the case from 1990 and onwards.

Tagging municipal candidates as UCP just makes it easier for the voters, they are pre-idenified as the stupidest people in the room and the ones not to vote for.

This is nothing new. We have an openly liberal politician running Edmonton. These politicians are already almost all affiliated with one party or another. Partisan politics brings in accountability. And that is needed now more than ever
But there have never been put into law whereas councillors can get fired at the whim of a political party

The UCP doesn't follow accountability at all. Former Conservative politicians in Alberta have said that they don't trust Danielle Smith and the UCP, because they are so dishonest. They are correct.
@@dwaynewladyka577 that’s an opinion. I think smith has been nothing but transparent and she’s done exactly as she said she would. She’s one of the only politicians that answers questions without giving the runaround. Name something she’s been dishonest about.
@Mathew-xr7kt Danielle Smith isn't transparent. A a former Alberta PC cabinet minister, from Peter Lougheed's government, who was also was an Attorney General, said that Danielle Smith clearly broke ethics rules, and should have had the police investigate her, and she also should have been disqualified from being premier, because of what she did. Another former Alberta PC cabinet minister also said what Danielle Smith did wrong, would have made any other premier in Alberta have to step down, if they did this when they were in power, years ago. These aren't opinions, but facts.
