This scene made me howl when I first saw this film in the theater. After being so passive and lazy for the entire movie, it was amazing to see the Dude “spring into action” and do something clever. I do wonder how many people recognize the pencil rubbing trick as a reference to Cary Grant in Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest.” The Coen brothers set me up perfectly. I was fully expecting some critical key piece of evidence that would help the Dude solve the case, and it was frickin’ hilarious that it turns out to be a completely irrelevant dirty doodle. Still cracks me up every time. So random. 😂😂😂

It’s like he’s constantly fighting against being the main character of the world’s worst spy movie.

After seeing this movie a couple of times, I think the funniest thing that's implied is that, after the scene where Bunny makes that offer to the Dude, the next scene is the Dude talking to his landlord about the rent being late, which implies the Dude really did go find an ATM.

Finally! You are the only reactor I've seen watch this film and comment on the Donnie missing the pin scene. The entire film Donnie makes strikes. That man rolls strikes so often in his life, him not getting one was a sign of impending doom. Look at his face, he looks confused, and sure enough the scene after he dies in the parking lot. I know so many people in life that just didn't pay enough attention to Donnie and just laughed. His is the most tragic of all characters in this film. Poor guy gets trashed by Walter just for speaking. Even in the end, he's put into a Folgers can and ultimately is used for a laugh. Pour one out for the man. Donnie who loved the outdoors, bowling, and surfing.
One thing I love about the Dude is that he never once gives thought to what's going on. Anytime he's talking to characters, he just repeats what other characters have said. "Hey, I know that guy. He's a nihilist."
Yeah, that's one thing that I haven't seen barely anyone talk about: how the Dude repeats sentences that were said by other characters before. He does this ALL THE TIME in the movie. It totally reflects his personality of being like a sponge, absorbing everything around him and just living in the moment.
The best part about the whole "Shut up, Donny" recurring joke is that Donny is never even bothered by it. He always chimes in whenever he wants and he never reacts to Walter except by waiting a bit before talking again. Also, I've seen interviews with Jeff Bridges where he says that pretty much the totality of the Dude's wardrobe consists of clothes that actually belonged to him and that he brought to the shoot based on what he felt the character would wear.

Yeah, I completely agree. I mean, I'm sure there are a few, if not a bunch, of other reaction channels who do just the same, but out of all the ones I watch, Brandon is the most insightful and gives very detailed and specific introspective on what he is watching. 1987's Raising Arizona is another Coen movie that has Cage, Holly Hunter, John Goodman. It's a Crime Comedy and one you should definitely watch eventually. Jeff Bridges in one of the remakes of True Grit is really good along with the young supporting actress.

For me, and I have no idea way, the line that killed me was when he leaned over the tub and said "Hey, man, this is a private residence." I fell out of my seat in the theater.
This exact visual gag was done in Mel Brooks' Life Stinks a few years earlier. Which was a shame, because it made it less funny for me when I first saw it in this (much better) movie.

Fun fact: We never get to see the dude actually bowling. One of my fav Coens movies is "Inside Llewyn Davis". Certainly lesser known than other flicks of them, it has a special place in my heart. I hope you go through all the Coen’s films chronologically like you did Tarantino’s. Their filmography deserves it. Also, as perceptive as you are, you’ll undoubtedly spot so many moments of correspondence with the ‘Fargo’ series. If you don’t go chronologically you might consider ‘a Serious Man’ which is referenced multiple times in ‘Fargo’ season 3. Also comedy’s in this vein like ‘Burn After Reading’, and ‘Hail Caesar!’ are both great. Thanks for the stellar reaction as always Brandon.
Fun fact: In the 100th episode of My Little Pony. There’s pony versions of Dude, Walter and Donnie. Basically the entire episode is focused on background characters and it shows a background character bowling with the Dude, Donnie and Walter.
When I went to rehab for opiates, I was expected to get in touch with my "higher power" while I navigated the 12 steps. As an agnostic, I found this aspect difficult until I loosened the parameters a bit. I imagined my higher power to literally be The Dude, chilling in the back of the limo in that sweater with his leg up, white Russian in hand. After that, it was smooth sailing 😂

This is my absolute favorite movie ever! I've seen it more than a dozen times. You definitely have to watch this movie more than once in order to pick up on everything, although you seemed to grasp it all really well for your first watch. You got it a lot better than I did my first time. Excellent review, my man!
This is one of my top favorite films of all time. The story is just so out there and the characters and the way they dress and the Ambiance and everything about this movie is just gold.

The Kidnapping note looks like the Fargo kidnapping note because that's how they used too look IRL. Can't match the handwriting if its all cut from widely available print magazines.
It might be an intentional reference, though. The TV Series is full of little references, not just to Fargo, but to other Coen movies as well. Of course you're right that the note with words cut out from periodicals is an old trope. The earliest case I know of is the Sherlock Holmes story "The Hound Of The Baskervilles" from 1902.

Interesting that you bring up that we don't get to see the bowling championship. When the legendary screenwriter William Goldman did a guest lecture at my college, he talked about interviewing the Coens for his book and how differently their minds work from anybody else's. He asked them specifically why they chose not to show the bowl off between Walter and Jesus that everything seemed to be building towards. They just looked at each other and said "Hmm. We never thought of that."
I've seen this movie described as The Coens Bros' take on film noir, with a lot of elements specifically matching "The Big Sleep" which stars Humphrey Bogart as a PI hired by a rich guy to sort out the gambling debts of his out of control daughter.

This exact visual gag was done in Mel Brooks' Life Stinks a few years earlier. Which was a shame, because it made it less funny for me when I first saw it in this (much better) movie.
For me it was when the cop clocks the Dude with the coffee cup out of nowhere. The pause before he does it is a key part of why it's funny to me somehow. I lose my shit every time 🤣
This movie is just about a guy trying to get his rug back. That rug tied the whole room together. I love this movie for its apparent simplicity.

Fun fact: We never get to see the dude actually bowling. One of my fav Coens movies is "Inside Llewyn Davis". Certainly lesser known than other flicks of them, it has a special place in my heart. And I haven´t seen anyone react to it, yet. Loved the reaction! Some people don´t seem to get the humour. Welcome to the religion of dudeism.
Another Coen Brothers Theme played out in this movie, the entire storyline doesn't matter at the end, nothing the characters do matter.

I hope you go through all the Coen’s films chronologically like you did Tarantino’s. Their filmography deserves it.
Also, as perceptive as you are, you’ll undoubtedly spot so many moments of correspondence with the ‘Fargo’ series.
If you don’t go chronologically you might consider ‘a Serious Man’ which is referenced multiple times in ‘Fargo’ season 3.
Also comedy’s in this vein like ‘Burn After Reading’, and ‘Hail Caesar!’ are both great.

Fun fact: In the 100th episode of My Little Pony. There’s pony versions of Dude, Walter and Donnie. Basically the entire episode is focused on background characters and it shows a background character bowling with the Dude, Donnie and Walter.

When I went to rehab for opiates, I was expected to get in touch with my "higher power" while I navigated the 12 steps. As an agnostic, I found this aspect difficult until I loosened the parameters a bit. I imagined my higher power to literally be The Dude, chilling in the back of the limo in that sweater with his leg up, white Russian in hand. After that, it was smooth sailing 😂

Dude calls Lebowski a "human paraquat." Just looked it up, paraquat is a chemical weed killer. Marijuana can be called "weed." So he's calling him a buzz killer? If so, that's a pretty obscure insult.

Walter is based on the screenwriter John Milius who wrote Apocalypse Now, Red Dawn, the Dirty Harry movies, and more. He’s an infamous maniac who literally pulled a gun on a studio head in a meeting once.
This is my absolute favorite movie ever! I've seen it more than a dozen times. You definitely have to watch this movie more than once in order to pick up on everything, although you seemed to grasp it all really well for your first watch. You got it a lot better than I did my first time. Excellent review, my man!

My favorite scene of any movie is the dude dropping his joint driving and hitting the dumpster. Tough call but it wins for me.
The Kidnapping note looks like the Fargo kidnapping note because that's how they used too look IRL. Can't match the handwriting if its all cut from widely available print magazines.
It might be an intentional reference, though. The TV Series is full of little references, not just to Fargo, but to other Coen movies as well.
Of course you're right that the note with words cut out from periodicals is an old trope. The earliest case I know of is the Sherlock Holmes story "The Hound Of The Baskervilles" from 1902.

Interesting that you bring up that we don't get to see the bowling championship. When the legendary screenwriter William Goldman did a guest lecture at my college, he talked about interviewing the Coens for his book and how differently their minds work from anybody else's. He asked them specifically why they chose not to show the bowl off between Walter and Jesus that everything seemed to be building towards. They just looked at each other and said "Hmm. We never thought of that."
If you haven't seen it, Barton Fink is a great Coen Brothers movie, with another top notch performance by John Goodman!
I've seen this movie described as The Coens Bros' take on film noir, with a lot of elements specifically matching "The Big Sleep" which stars Humphrey Bogart as a PI hired by a rich guy to sort out the gambling debts of his out of control daughter.
