Because they were and still are piles of junk. That 2.0L 115hp SOHC motor ate so much oil, it was seriously out of control. A quart every 500 to 1,000 miles! The interiors fell apart as if they were glued together with Elmer’s glue. Too bad they were such piles of junk because they were fun looking and driving cars.

Same, I inherited my grandmas 04 beetle and she got it in 2004. Still in almost perfect condition inside and engine is still solid (it was religiously maintained)
