    Computers have been around a lot longer than PCs.
    You have to go back at least the 1950's to get the first operating systems.
    The first OS's with which I worked were those designed for the IBM 360 system in the late 1960's. And even then they supported multi-tasking and had true memory management that protected one user's data from other processes.

    So basically Windows, OS X, or linux uses bootstrapt, which goes into the automatic booter of the CPU and then as soon as you interact with the system it sends out requests made out of binary code to the CPU every millisecond to enable you to move the cursor and more and the system uses graphical design to display images onto the video card. then you can open multiple programs with multitasking which is pretty self-explanatory. It sends out more requests to the cpu in order for the system to open up multiple tabs of things.

      ***** ...except it's more stable, more secure, lighter to run, faster, and 100% free. As well as infinitely customizable. You got it the wrong way around, there's no reason to use anything BUT linux unless you really need a program that only works on a different platform.

    I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
    Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
    Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

    I am old enough to remember the C/PM and MSDOS operating systems. Back in those days any program could access all the hardware directly. The programs did this to speed things up on these slow computers. About the only thing the operating system was used for was disk drive input and output of files.

    Howdy.
    Back in the days of DOS 5 it was said the OS manages files and folders. Win 3.1 was said to be a graphical interface to the OS. Files are generated with applications.
    These days these distinctions are blurred. Also has hardware management become an important part of the OS.

    • @HeyItsHades
      @HeyItsHades 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      what makes most linux distros fast is because the kernel and OS are very minimal. They hardly have any bloatware to slow down the machine. They run what is necessary and that is it.
      Further, there is constant active development on the linux kernel done by millions of people everyday so they can tweak, and tweak, and tweak code the maximum performance.

    Just a question, I don't own a Mac so I don't know, do Macs have drivers? I watched this certain video once asking professors of a certain University about Macs and PCs, and Mac owners generally loved their machines because it didn't need to install any "confusing drivers", just run and go.

    • @skifree0
      @skifree0 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ApexPredator_ yes there are drivers, like any modern operating system. The only difference is the update channel goes through apple rather than the user, which actually leads to the confusion of whether OSX has drivers to begin with. Because apple hardware is typically very vertically controlled, all drivers are prepackaged into os updates rather than a separate installation. its tightly controlled and certified.
      so to answer your question both claims are correct, there IS a driver, but you still can just "run and go" as its all preloaded into the os.

    • @USER69473
      @USER69473 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ApexPredator_ search about hackintosh installation and you will know =)

    • @xplinux22
      @xplinux22 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ApexPredator_ Oh, they have drivers all right. Anyone who has built a Hackintosh rig knows the pain of loading the right *.kext so the OS doesn't go belly-up if the hardware doesn't match Apple's specifications 100%. The reason drivers are rarely a problem for Mac users is that the hardware it is distributed with is tightly controlled and the OS comes preloaded with all of the drivers it needs, out of the box.
      Unfortunately, it is literally impossible for OS X talk to anything unsupported by Apple, and it will fail very noisily if you don't carefully and diligently select your hardware beforehand, as Apple provides no fallback drivers and no safety guarantees. Third party official drivers are basically nonexistent for Macs, and Apple clearly states the illegality of writing and freely redistributing them without explicit approval.
      However, that certainly doesn't stop the Hackintosh community from patching and writing custom *.kext drivers of their own so people can use OS X with the latest whiz-bang video cards and whatnot.

    LinusTechTips 3 videos on Operating Systems and only about 30 seconds about Linux and no mention of BSD? Really?
    Also, while Windows and Mac OS X have built in user interfaces, Linux and BSD do not. Even in Windows and Mac OS X, the UI is a userspace process for security reasons (except, for some reason, font rendering in Windows.)

    • @Niosus
      @Niosus 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      WayZHC In a sense the kernel is what defines the OS. It does all the important work. Everything else is just thrown into the package for convenience for the end user.

    • @Niosus
      @Niosus 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      WayZHC I know very well that a kernel alone is useless, just like a car is useless without a steering wheel.
      That doesn't mean that the collection of Linux distros has a lot of things in common. There are a lot of general things you can say that hold true for nearly all UNIX-like OSes.
      Anyway. Who really cares about the "overal" comparison. Use the right tool for the right job, use what works for you.

    • @LeonoraTindall
      @LeonoraTindall 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The OS is the kernel plus the libraries and tools required to interact with it. That may or may not mean GUI, but Linux by itself is definitely not an OS. It has no interface at all, not even a shell.

    • @LeonoraTindall
      @LeonoraTindall 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quinn Wood If that were the definition, GNU/Hurd would have no operating system since any part of it can crash and the OS will recover.

    • @LeonoraTindall

      Quinn Wood, BSD is an operating system, Linux is not. Linux is a bare kernel. GNU/Linux is an operating system.

    How does an OS keep track of what program has what block of RAM allocated?

    • @LeonoraTindall
      @LeonoraTindall 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      UntouchedWagons There is a thing called a Page Table that keeps track of what physical memory maps to what virtual memory. The OS then keeps a table of which pages belong to which processes.

    • @EngineeringVignettes
      @EngineeringVignettes 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      UntouchedWagons MMU, (Memory Manager Unit) which manages the page table. Essentially each program runs in the same memory space (starting address is constant) but these assigned memory spaces are virtual.

    Hey, linus, you sould explain Why can't always just pop in the hard drive of any random desktop computer with an OS already on it into another and have it boot inside a laptop.... cause that's fun and stuff.

      @xplinux22 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      alex kohm The problem is that many of the installed drivers don't match the new hardware. Suddenly the OS is struggling to communicate with the hardware, and more often than not may BSOD (or kernel panic for you Linux, BSD, and OS X users).

    Random question: How do I download more ram?

    • @rambow70
      @rambow70 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Potating Potato See a common misconception of downloading ram is the amount of ram you need to download it. It usually takes quite a bit of system memory to "unpack" the file for the installation. Unfortunately that makes it almost impossible to download more ram. Hope that helps! Also all the good ram torrents have too many seeds and downloads can take up to weeks for even just a 4gb upgrade.

      It's pretty good considering it's market share.
      There's tonnes of software for it just no adobe/microsoft stuff.
      But hey i'm not here to convince anyone to switch to it,it's still kind of user-unfriendly and has a long way to go to appeal to the common folk.But if programming is your thing (In my case x86 asm) then it's the perfect OS for you.

    Sorry i'm dumb, but is it like, if someone make a computer, then when your on that computer, you need a OS, but there is like hardwares CPU screen and stuff but to like make it work and do things on it, you need an OS?

    Would killing explore.exe help improve game performance?
    Not that I need that on my pc but curious. I have a gaming pc and I wouldn't see any difference as far as I am aware.

      About a year late, and I don't have Windows, so I cannot check for sure, but probably not. Any file managers worth their salt don't use any CPU when they are in the background, only a little bit of RAM. Unless you are running out of RAM on your system, it won't really give you any performance boost.

    If someone is building a new PC they might as well go with Windows 7 since you'll save some money instead of going with 8.1. We'll all receive the same upgrade this summer to 10.

    Anti-virus is pretty over-rated. I honestly just use MSE since it never bothers me. I do have Malewarebytes though since its so good. These two together is good enough.
