It's interesting: ev'ry aria in hallenberg's voice become so cool! Imagine an already cool aria like this one... I love her and I wish they record more cds and dvds with her, since I live in Brazil and I can't go to the tours
Next friday I will hear Ann sing this at the Drottningholm Court Theatre outside Stockholm. I am so looking forward to it, it will be a fantastic experience!
Well, now I am back from a stunning performance at Drottningholm of Ariodante. Although Ann is ten years older than when this video was made, she still sings with beautiful lustre, brilliance and intelligence. As I always discover, you must hear artists alive to be able to get a fair impression. Birgit Nilsson was immensely great even in 1981. And Ann I have heard at Drottningholm several times over the years, alway improving. Ariodante has indeed some very surprisingly modern music
Gudrun; Ann sang several Händel arias on the tour this summer with Christophe Rousset/Les Talens Lyriques (including Dopo notte). They will make another tour in the spring of 2011 with Farinelli arias.
Indeed, the conducting has as well to be complimented (unlike Curtis` Ario). I heard it live on Radio France and was quite surprised: Ann Hallenberg gave a very laid-back interview, partly in French, until 5 minutes before the performance!!
Again, fantastic! I like this even more than her Dopo Notte. Will we ever hear it again??? Can`t believe it has been performed only 1x. Nothing against Purcell, but why does Ann Hallenberg not tour with Handel bravura arias instead/asap? I`d say she`s in her prime exaclty now.
Where I live they use a constant high pitch tone, that only young ears are able to pick up. Both examples of auric warfare, but I preer your country's approach. That gives us "old people" something nice to listen to, and it won't drive the dog nuts.
Oh, great to hear her singing this aria unabriged. I think this aria is the most virtuostic number that Ariodante gets to sing, with some of the longest semiquaver passages as well as angular, explosive coloratura Handel ever wrote. I think her voice is more suitable for Ariodante, since it is a bit more "masculine", than Didonato's, but curiously, she's hardly ornamenting in the da capo section on this performance.
Good point. Hm it`s impossible for me to choose a fav Ario. Here in "Con l`ali", I prefer Hallenberg because of her pure, slim coloratura singing. "Preparati morire", though, goes to DiDonato. The furore in her last 2 "vedro" cannot be beaten imo. PS: I love the fact that we have from both singers a real, 100% live recording. For me always the benchmark. And btw the highest form of art I can think of. I kneel down before both.
I love both of them, but for me, Von Otter has the edge - agility, dramatic timing and technical prowess. She pulls off the paradox of having fun while remaining completely committed to character!
What I know from Purcell is OK, amusing or touching (Dido) and historically interesting, but it`s not this bravura singing (like HERE), where I`d clearly prefer Ann Hallenberg in. My until-now fav Ariodante DiDonato has got a companion on her throne.
They play the classical music in subway stations to get rid of the teenagers? I didn´t realize that, I thought it was intended for our pleasure... . And they did that with the high frequency at a sort of mall which I used to cross years ago, gave me such a shock, I thought I was getting tinnitus, but the feeping was only there, so I drew my conclusions. Nobody else seemed to hear it, though. (Guess most teens already have hearing loss, anyway.)
Why don't they play this stuff in elevators instead of the semi musical vomit that is customary and that only programmes people the wrong way? Afraid the contraption is going to fall down from all the passengers jumping inside for joy?
Great!! She is Ann Hallenberganza ♥♥♥♥

All of these commenters that say "classical music" don't know anything about the Baroque period, which is definitely not the Classical period.
