    I think you hit the nail on the head. A big mistake people make is NOT placing enough outposts. They're a great way to grab available resources and to act as a defensive point on the map.

    • @cliffordohrnberger
      @cliffordohrnberger ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah until now I have only placed an outpost to eventually turn it into a city.
      I hadn't realized how claims worked!
      I also did not realize you could release your own cities as vassals That was really good to learn!

    • @madzaisa
      @madzaisa ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly it feels too OP. Boxing someone with outposts while your actual territory is so far away is counter-intuitive. So, other party, by just expanding normally, are the bad guys because you generate more grievances as you expand your cities that way. Amount of grievances should depend on how far it is from your main territory. So placing an outpost in someone backyard should make you a bad guy, and not other way around as it is now.

    • @8bit_outcast708
      @8bit_outcast708 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does make you the bad guy when you do that to someone. You could also use those grievances to declare a just war to remove them from your territory.
      Every war doesn't need to be nation ending. You can get some decent gains from short ones if you go in with a plan.

    "Hey man, remember that time I settled a city right at your doorstep?"
    "Yes, I'm still pissed, mate."
    "I'll give you 300 gold to make it up to you."
    "Ok. I forgive you. Will you forgive me that time I called you a poopie-head? I'll give you 50 gold."
    "Nah, you called me a poopie-head, I'm going to war with you!"

  • @Germanloverfromchina

    Just a tip I learned the hard way. You can only buy 2 grievances every 5 turns from each faction. So you might want to do it sooner than later. Also you can build teleporters on outposts which can be used as really good locations to mount an assault to aid in defense.

    The more I heard about the need to grab outposts, the more I thought how tedious a gameplay loop that sounded. Once I started actually doing it I found it made for a much more consistent play style.
    The main issue with not claiming outposts is that if you don’t, the AI will probably settle next to you and fuck up your expansion plans. Setting up 3-4 outposts around your starting 2 cities gives you so much room to expand to 20 turns down the line.

  • @mrdvcapj
    @mrdvcapj ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Outposts can be used to make a teleporter too…essential when going to war with cities far from your unit making cities

  • @benjii_boi
    @benjii_boi ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I've been enjoying the strat of initially playing super tall and going for early free city vassals. Early game focus on scouting, usually only put down a couple of outposts unless I see someone forward settling me like the AI loves to do. I'll put them in choke points if possible, otherwise I just use outposts to cap ancient wonders and potentially contested magical materials, using it to cap iron/gold/food/etc deposits isn't worth it
    IMHO better to invest in units early on than to go too hard on the outposts since each one takes 10 gold per turn to maintain. Later game they become really effective for frontline heals and strategic teleportation circles tho
    I've been having really good success by focusing on one main city and dumping imperium into more pops. Pump out extra two scouts in first two turns and send all three in diff directions to locate players and free cities. Free cities that start at war are a bonus, easy to steamroll them if you stack society traits for military. Early game is FC Pokemon; I've been getting 3 or 4 early vassals every match thru using both diplomacy and conquest (assuming regular FC spawns)
    I rarely found cities from the ground up now. I declare war on who I can get away with, but also find good success in selectively pissing off individual players so they declare war on me. It takes a lot of resources and time to ramp up, so I strategize around how strong my neighbours are. I prefer going diplomatic with players farther away from me so I can wait for my immediate neighbours to pour their resources into their cities and expansion so I can roll through with my deathstacks and absorb the best ones and vassalize the rest
    I have one city and a big army + you have multiple cities and a smaller military = I have a big army and multiple cities
    This doesn't work as well if you found your cities pretty close to each other, but then you're kinda hamstringing yourself as you start expanding and limiting the number of provinces you can annex
    If you focus on one main city + vassalizing FCs for early thru midgame you can hit a nice timing where the wide players' investments aren't quite paying off so they can't float a bunch of units, and due to spending gold on scaling multiple cities they'll be behind you in terms of prod/research/draft. Basically when you hit T3 most ppl are still T1 - T2 so if you build your unit comps right you can absolutely steamroll anyone who went eco vs. army
    Idea isn't to eliminate other players initially, but to grab their forward settlements and vassalize them to cripple their eco scaling into the late game. Even if they have a big military it'll be split between their cities and likely other engagements, so deathstack blitzkrieg tactics work great for sniping frontier cities (especially since they're usually much less fortified than throne or free cities)
    Btw T2 Order tome has a spell called "Covenant of the Faith" which you can cast on your vassals to generate 5 imperium (info text says it's 10 but in game it's actually 5) per turn per vassal w/ a very modest mana upkeep. Game I just finished I was generating almost 200 imperium per turn (186 at highest) and that was with upkeep of a few T4 units. 50 of that was just from my ten vassals. If I wasn't paying upkeep I'd have been making over 200 imp per tick. If you really wanted to cheese it you could found a city, immediately release as vassal and then cast the spell. There's no cap on how many you can cast it on, the only limit is the mana upkeep (which I think is 5 mana per turn so basically a 1:1 mana to imp conversion lol)
    DISCLAIMER:
    The success of my approach probably depends on playstyle and build. I've found it works across most of my builds but I tend to build for tall eco, tech rush, and very aggressive conquest
    Latest win was with my most broken build yet lol. Order/Nature focus with T2/T3 (and maybe T4 lategame) Materium, and a dip into Mystic for Tome of Teleport. Faith builds are absolutely busted, especially with the High culture. Feudal can also work well with this, but Awakeners are an SSS+ class unit that no other culture can really match (Mystic Spellbreakers are the only thing comparable IMHO)
    I haven't been able to find a better stack than a shrine of smiting, two awakeners, and either two of your tankiest available frontline units (iron or golden golems work great for this) and a hero w/ faithful, or just three frontline units. Double shrines of smiting are even better, but 2x shrines per stack requires massive upkeep and isn't really necessary
    3 stacks = 3 shrines of smiting and 15 faithful units. Due to the uncapped bonus damage it means you have three units with a no-cooldown 6-hex range single target attack that deals 45 fire and 45 spirit damage. Once a shrine of smiting hits Legend rank (super easy to max rank a stack with the Ascended Warriors spell from T4 Order tome btw) it gets Killing Momentum which means you get to use it twice if you kill a unit w/ the first smiting prayer blast. Unbelievably fucking OP lmao I haven't found anything else that even comes close to this powerful. Literally autoresolved my way through multiple endgame Chaos horde deathstacks on Brutal, barely taking damage let alone losses. By the time I got gold golems I could melt stacks of Legend rank mythic/T5/T4 units without even blinking lol

    Thank you so much for this video! I have been enjoying my current playthrough, but never understood where, when, and why to establish outposts. Even more so, I have been using diplomacy very sparingly because I honestly didn't understand (or care to understand) it enough. This is the most helpful video I have probably seen since I started playing.

  • @spookydan39
    @spookydan39 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Some things I don't know with regards to this, and I don't think the game explains it:
    1: If you set up an outpost and it generates food / production does anything actually happen to that? Does it go to the nearest city etc? Or does it just vanish into nothingness, so only gold / mana / research is worth it?
    2: If you have a vassal, and they're generating imperium from wonders etc, do you get a cut of that imperium or is that not provided to you?
    Also, one strategy I'm not sure about early game is when do you want to send your hero out to create outposts to found cities / vassals?
    Do you do it immediately and let the army handle easy threats to clear nodes in your throne city, to get more resources early, or do you clear the nodes first and then go out to place outposts later - letting your hero get more experience early from fighting?

    • @thenoseplays2488
      @thenoseplays2488 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you look at a city you will see food production and draft separated by a line from the other resources. That line is a good reminder or separator or what goods outposts can collect.
      Cities will collect both left and right
      Outposts will only collect things on right ... so mana gold research and if you can claim a wonder with one imperium.
      All food production and draft is lost until you upgrade the outpost to a city. If the tiles claimed would not be producing those anyways, nothing is lost.
      Good tip is to look for areas of the map where you can grab a gold vien adjacent to a mana or wonder. This outpost once built will generate 1 gold and be able to claim 10 mana or the wonder once cleared as opposed to costing you gold. This gives you friendly region far from home to heal and set up defenses in such as walls and watchtowers.

    • @ouboet9245
      @ouboet9245 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @thenoseplays2488
      @thenoseplays2488 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There doesn't appear to be a hard hero cap. You get no upkeep cost on one hero per city with each hero above your cities number costing 30 gold. It's a soft cap that will tank your economy if you go overboard on heroes as 30 gold for a single unit is more than a full stack of T1 units upkeep.

    • @MattyIce213
      @MattyIce213 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thenoseplays2488 So if you released a city as a vassal while at max free heroes would one of your heroes start costing 30 gold? My biggest tip to u is go with offense or defense and focus it.
      Offense with cheaper swarm units doing most of ur damage turn 2-3
      Or high upkeep defense units that absorb and heal the damage while dishing out some damage.
      Defense one is the easiest, focus enchantments, tier 3 defense units, and buffs with healing. Can't go wrong. U won't be able to have large armies but ull have elite armies to win auto battles with.
