Believed to be another of the message songs from McCartney to Lennon. John felt that some of the songs on McCartney's 1971 Ram album were aimed at him, particularly "Too Many People" and Three Legs." Lennon responded with "How Do Sleep?" on his 1971 Imagine LP. The original album packaging also included a postcard that appeared to mock McCartney. It showed Lennon holding a pig by the ears, where McCartney's LP cover had Paul holding the horns of a ram. I think there are definitely hints of hostility in this song. The line "some people can't sleep at night" seems to be a jab at Lennon's "How Do You Sleep?" There's also the line "only fools take second best," which could be Paul poking fun of Lennon's failure to produce a solo #1 single. Then there's the words "only you outshine the rest." Was this perhaps Paul's stab at Lennon's inclusion of Yoko Ono at every Beatles recording session or his threats to leave the band towards the end? It's obvious that the two men and songwriting partners loved and admired each other. I'm glad that there relationship was on much better terms when Lennon was killed.

It's hard to definitively say because a lyric sheet wasn't released with the album. I still think the song is a response to Lennon and that line is a response to "How Do You Sleep?" I'm sure both men felt regret over their words and actions.

I think it makes perfect sense. He is asking how is possible that people can sleep at night believing love is a lie.
