Nobody expects Ema vs Shamir to be a close match, but it is an opportunity for Shamir to show if he can hang with Ema in some rallies. He should be pumped if he gets a few games. Ema vs Milan would be interesting to watch.
As a 4.5 player myself I find that pickleball doesn't seem to hurt my game, alternatively it's dramatically improved my volleys in tennis, but that'd merely because the # of reps you get in pickleball vs. Tennis in that scenario.
Having played squash, tennis and table tennis at a (low) competitive level I would say that squash suffers least from the other two because the stroke mechanics are instinctively dissimilar but tennis and table tennis have a mutual detrimental effect because one may mistakingly transfer between the two. I can best judge table tennis, which I played at a comparatively higher level. The way you generate spin in TT is very different from tennis, so you basically have to unlearn most of the stroke mechanics of tennis in order to have proper ones in TT. While the range of motion on the TT forehand is high, the backhand stroke is very compact and the contact point lies in front of the body, not to the side. Another major difference is the stance. Most tennis players who have some fun with TT stand upright, while you need to be in a crouching (Z-like) position almost continuously. I haven't played padel yet (the European hype that has a strong resemblance to pickle ball but with the added element of a wall like in squash) so I can't judge it but I wager it mostly benefits from other racket sports while having a bad effect on them because it's a technical simplification.
Lifelong tennis player, recent pickleball doubles league player. I think pickleball has been good for my tennis volleying, since doubles pickleball is primarily at the net at close range. It takes quick reflexes. I try to use the same fundamentals of split step and crossover for volleying in both, and pickleball has helped engrain that muscle memory for me. I think I'm lighter on my feet in tennis because of pickleball. Groundstrokes are a different story. My pickleball groundstrokes suffer at times because of my tendency to hit it like tennis, which doesn't work for me. Like Anna said, you need continental grip, and a flatter swing in pickleball. I try to spin a pickleball with a tennis forehand grip, and it rarely works. I don't know if it's proper, but I get more success in pickleball wih an underhand-like forehand, like licking it up to get topspin because the ball stays so low and the paddle is shorter. Anyway, I'm a die-hard tennis player, but pickleball has it's place. In the dead of winter here in Idaho, pickleball is a cheap alternative to get some court time and exercise.
Playing pickleball before tennis definitely messes up my shots. In pickleball I have to swing much harder then when I play tennis my swing stays like that making it hard for me to keep the ball inside
My biggest issue is getting the proper distance from me to the ball. The pickleball is played so much closer to your body. If I go play tennis without getting 2-3 hitting sessions in beforehand I am going to struggle more than I usually do (I am a recreational player who is strictly fun and exercise) but I do like to compete. And that doggone kitchen! If I follow my instinct and step forward to punch the volley…ooops in the kitchen. But I do enjoy them both but to me going from pickleball to tennis is a much bigger challenge
I think Shamir will have fun. It's always amazing to play and compete against someone with a level so high because you can actuallty feel what it means to be at that level and what it means to be on the other part of the court. It can be helpful to learn and to appreciate how much those high level players train to reach this kind of performance. I once had this opportunity, I was destroyed but I learnt a LOT and I was so grateful. I can't wait!
I play both. Pickleball won’t hurt your tennis game, but it won’t help it either. Tennis, on the other hand , helps your Pickleball game. I believe this to be the case because tennis is a much more technical sport with low margin for error.
From my experience it’s help my volleys in coming to the net a lot more. But that’s pretty much it and I feel like my two handed backhand is a lot worse in tennis at least after I play pickle ball, because you can’t really hit a two-handed backhand in pickle ball I find myself just punching and bunting along with it. Also there’s no weird you’re feeling than going from Pickleball to Tennis😂 all the sudden the racket in the car it feels huge and I find myself in this time in the ball. I don’t really have that problem when I go from Tennis to Pickleball.
Depends on how much you play each game. Badminton does, because I start to use more wrist. PB players definitely know who’s a tennis player, I think because tennis players spend less time dinking, and tend to swing away.
I think it's similar enough to tennis that it won't affect your strokes much. On the other hand, badminton is a popular sport here in Malaysia, but I avoid it because the wristwork certainly messes up my tennis!
I played Pickleball with friends for a few weeks without playing tennis. When I went back to tennis, my best shot (forehand) became terrible. I mistimed constantly and misjudged the bounce. I went from a solid 4.0 to around 3.5 because my main weapon became completely unreliable. I'm working on getting my forehand back and I think I'm gonna stick to tennis now lol
Did you figure the forehand out? I just played tennis for the first time in about 9 months, been playing pickleball all these months and my forehand was just bad, and now my whole arm is aching because I was tensing it way too much. I'm guessing I was trying to use too compact of a swing from pickleball which created tension, and I never really figured out how to make a relaxed swing. Had to stop playing because arm was too tired.
@@LearnBeachVolleyballFast I got my fh back after a few sessions of tennis, but I only played pickleball for less than 8 hours so if you've been playing for months it might take longer to recover your shot
Wrinkleball is a great game for people who need a social outlet while engaging in an easy to do sport. It's chatty and loud and is way better than tech based activities. While it is incompatible with tennis and other racket sports, it is a great way for older people to get out and socialize.
Poor Shamir is toast, looking at Ema's level of play. Their match will probably lead right up to the next video "dealing with crushing defeat - how the bagel becomes your best friend." As far as Pickleball is concerned, I think it would take more than just half an hour or so of Pickleball to have much effect on your tennis. Although the first minute of post-Pickleball tennis, the length of the shots seemed a bit shorter, many landed around the service line.
I doubt if Ema vs Shamir will happen. But if they play, a lot of points will be over in 1 or 2 shots. But that shouldn't be a problem creating a 8 minute video out of that match.
Once month passed since this video was posted. Ema vs Shamir match will not happen as I said in my original comment. Now Ema is planning to go pro again. There is no reason for her to play a rec player. Ema and Shamir will be in the same video only if Shamir is getting a coaching lesson from Ema.
Don't know about pickleball, but after playing squash for a while, the tennis ball seems to weigh a hundred pounds lol. Alternatively, playing squash after tennis is like a walk in a park, the racket is light, the ball is light, no strain on your wrist whatsoever
I took tennis classes for years as a child well into my teens. I was good and enjoyed it but I stopped playing because tennis people were so aggressive and unfriendly. I'm not saying pickleball is particularly athletic but at least it's fun and social.
I noticed that when playing pickleball there was a lot more banter and talking back and forth. But when you were playing Tennis you both looked so much more focused? Why do you think this is the case?
That’s a great observation. I think Tennis requires intensity and focus and it would be impossible to play all out while chit chatting back and forth. I’m sure it’s the same for Pickleball when played at high intensity. I don’t know about EMA but my Pickleball intensity was super low 😂😩

Racquetball will definitely hurt your tennis game! I had a great western tennis forehand , played racquetball for a few weeks, ruined my tennis forehand!
Used to play against a big-time trash talkin university racquetball instructor. He was a great net player, but those short racquetball strokes didn't work well from the baseline. He also would run out of steam trying to cover a full tennis court versus having to cover a short area on a racquetball Court. You only hit twice over an extended period of time. I will guarantee if you were to play racquetball regularly or pickleball, it will definitely affect your tennis game. I played pickleball one time because some guys offered me twenty bucks. I absolutely destroyed those dudes and never played or will play again. Not only will it mess up my tennis game, but I will lose my street credits in d.c. if it were known I play a sport with a dorkey name like: 'PICKLEBALL'...
